Modeling the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire-International Version.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are related to a host of deleterious physical and mental health outcomes. The ACE-International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) was developed to assess categories of ACEs (e.g., sexual, emotional, and physical abuse) in internationally representative samples. Though the ACE-IQ has been used world-wide, little work has examined the structure of this measure. Further, much of the modeling techniques implemented lacked theoretical rationale. The present work used two principal components analyses (PCA) to evaluate the ACE-IQ structure using both the identified ACE cate

"He Who Spareth the Rod Hateth His Son": Perceptions Regarding Corporal Punishment Among Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Fathers in Israel.

Based on the findings of substantial research, Western professionals today perceive corporal punishment as a threat to child well-being. They also view it as a violation of children's rights. Nonetheless, many minority groups in Western societies still consider it to be a legitimate child-rearing practice. In response to this gap, this article presents qualitative findings from an exploratory context-informed study of Ultra-Orthodox Jewish fathers in Israel, regarding their perceptions and ascribed meanings of corporal punishment. Our exploration was guided by the following research question:

Interactions of childhood maltreatment and genetic variations in adult depression: A systematic review.

Background Childhood maltreatment (CM) significantly increases the risk of adulthood psychopathology. Interplay between susceptible genetic variations and CM contributes to the occurrence of depression. This review aims to systematically synthesize the relationships between genetic variations and depression among those exposed to CM. Methods Electronic databases and gray literature to March 31st, 2020 were searched for literature on the topic of depression and CM limited to English-language. Data extraction and quality assessment of key study characteristics were conducted. Qualitative approac

Childhood maltreatment and cognitive functioning: the role of depression, parental education, and polygenic predisposition.

Childhood maltreatment is associated with cognitive deficits that in turn have been predictive for therapeutic outcome in psychiatric patients. However, previous studies have either investigated maltreatment associations with single cognitive domains or failed to adequately control for confounders such as depression, socioeconomic environment, and genetic predisposition. We aimed to isolate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and dysfunction in diverse cognitive domains, while estimating the contribution of potential confounders to this relationship, and to investigate gene-environ

Redistribution and recognition in social work practice: Lessons learned from providing material assistance in child protection settings.

Despite growing recognition of the links between poverty and child maltreatment, little is known about the specific practices and strategies utilized to directly respond to families' poverty. One such practice is the provision of material assistance, which is widespread in child protection settings but has received negligible scholarly attention. The article aims to describe and conceptualize this underresearched practice and to explore the challenges workers face when implementing it. The study described here included 20 in-depth interviews conducted with social workers working in an innovati

Adaptation measures in dental care for children with history of Adverse Childhood Experiences: A practical proposal.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) such as maltreatment, abuse, or neglect can disrupt childhood development and increase the risk of health issues, including dental health. Such a vulnerable population frequently may deny dental treatment due to fear of intimate contact in the oral cavity, resulting in a vicious cycle that further leads to detrimental oral health. It is important for dentists, particularly pediatric dentists, to not only understand how to identify potential cases of abuse or maltreatment but also how to treat these patients so that the dental treatment does not become a neg

Adverse childhood experiences and early maladaptive schemas in adulthood: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Schema Therapy is based on the theory that trauma and neglect in childhood lead to early maladaptive schemas and psychopathology in adulthood. The aim of this review was to evaluate support for this theory by synthesizing the literature on childhood adversity and schemas. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were completed in compliance with PRISMA. PsycInfo, CINAHL and PubMed were searched to identify eligible studies that reported unadjusted association(s) between adverse childhood events and schema scores when participants were 18 years or older. Meta-analyses were co

Aggregate-level Lead Exposure and Child Maltreatment.

The purpose of this study was to examine the possible ecological association between aggregate blood lead levels (BLL) and rates of child maltreatment. To this end, we employed an ecologic study design, analyzing results from 59,645 child BLL tests between the years 1996 and 2007, and 6,640 substantiated maltreatment investigations from 2006 to 2016 in a large Midwest city. Separate Bayesian spatial Poisson conditional autoregressive (CAR) and Bayesian spatial zero-inflated Poisson CAR models were used to predict the occurrence of maltreatment.Bivariate results showed that aggregate rates of m

Examining the relationships between childhood abuse history, attachment, and health anxiety.

This study examined the relationship between childhood abuse experiences and health anxiety in adulthood and investigated the role of attachment in this relationship. In total, 181 university students (aged 18-29 years) completed a battery of measures that assessed childhood abuse, health anxiety, and attachment orientation. Health anxiety was associated with all categories of childhood abuse and overall childhood abuse severity. Anxious attachment partially mediated the relationship between overall childhood abuse and health anxiety in adulthood. The results further our understanding of the r

[Childhood trauma in subjects at ultra high risk for psychosis].

Childhood adversity rates would be higher in subjects at ultra-high risk of psychosis than in the general population. In addition to reference ideas, magical thoughts and social dysfunction, subjects at ultra-high risk of psychosis with a history of childhood trauma would experience more severe and specific symptoms. Childhood trauma, especially sexual abuse, was associated with the transition to psychosis. Several models have been cited to explain the link between trauma and the subsequent onset of psychosis or prepsychotic states: dysfunctional cognitive patterns, affective dysregulation, at

Achieving Population-Level Change Through a System-Contextual Approach to Supporting Competent Parenting.

The quality of parenting children receive affects a diverse range of child and youth outcomes. Addressing the quality of parenting on a broad scale is a critical part of producing a more nurturing society. To achieve a meaningful population-level reduction in the prevalence rates of child maltreatment and social and emotional problems that are directly or indirectly influenced by parenting practices requires the adoption of a broad ecological perspective in supporting families to raise children. We make the case for adopting a multilevel, whole of population approach to enhance competent paren

The role of incest issues in relapse.

Comprehensive studies have established that relapse is the most common outcome of recovery programs treating addictive behaviors. This article examines the fact that relapse is often related to uncovering painful early childhood incest experiences that have been defended against through self-destructive addictive behaviors. Another aspect of relapse is the phenomenon of multiaddictions: withdrawal from an identified addictive behavior will often lead to the unmasking of other addictive behaviors. The phenomenon of cross-addiction is widely acknowledged in the addictions field, but the connecti

[Abuse in adolescence. Incest. Apropos of 21 cases].

While violent behavior and delinquency in youth have been extensively described, the different patterns of violence that adolescents are subjected to in their families are far less known. Physical abuse is probably as frequent as in childhood and offers some distinctive features because of its appearance or prolongation in adolescence. Moreover, sexual assaults become more important, especially in girls. From review of the literature and the experience of 21 cases of incest observed in the Adolescent Medicine Unit of Hospital Bicêtre, we discuss the circumstances, impact on adolescents and rol

Parenting stress and pandemic burden in families with crying, sleeping, and feeding problems during COVID-19: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Families with child crying, sleeping, and feeding problems are a vulnerable group due to high levels of parenting stress and an increased risk for child abuse. However, little is known about their specific situation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of our study was to assess parenting stress and pandemic burden / constraints in families with child crying, sleeping, and feeding problems (= clinical sample) compared to a non-clinical sample. First, we hypothesized that parenting stress during the pandemic would be higher in the clinical sample compared to the nonclinical sample.
