A multivariate multilevel analysis of youth motor competence. The Peruvian Health and Optimist Growth Study.

We use a multivariate multilevel model to study the links between physical fitness (PF) and gross motor coordination (GMC) and investigate the influence of predictors affecting their levels across age. We sampled 7918 Peruvians, aged 6-15 years, from sea-level, Amazon region and high-altitude. Composite markers of GMC and PF were derived (GMCz and PFz , respectively). BMI, biological maturation, and stunting were assessed. School characteristics were obtained via an objective audit. School contexts explained 35% of the associations between PFz and GMCz , whereas children's characteristics expl

Outcome of children born after pregnancy denial.

INTRODUCTION: Denial of pregnancy remains a phenomenon little known to healthcare professionals. Yet its repercussions are far from negligible. The aim of this study was to assess whether denial of pregnancy has an impact on the infant's development. PATIENTS AND METHOD: This prospective study included 51 full-term infants born in Nancy Regional Maternity Hospital between 1 January 2009 and 30 June 2015. In this study, the development of the children was followed longitudinally. We collected data during the neonatal period, at 9months, and at 2years of age from the infants' file and standardi

Thin isotropic FLAIR MR images at 1.5T increase the yield of focal cortical dysplasia transmantle sign detection in frontal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The transmantle sign is a distinctive imaging marker of focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type II in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), which is revealed predominantly by fluid-attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences. Although the transmantle sign detection yield is high by routine imaging protocols for epilepsy at 3T, most centers around the world have access to 1.5T MR technology and FLE patients often receive negative imaging reports. This study investigates the optimization of transmantle detection yield at 1.5T by introducing a 3D thin-slice isotropic FLAIR sequence in the epil

Born in Bradford's Better Start: an experimental birth cohort study to evaluate the impact of early life interventions.

BACKGROUND: Early interventions are recognised as key to improving life chances for children and reducing inequalities in health and well-being, however there is a paucity of high quality research into the effectiveness of interventions to address childhood health and development outcomes. Planning and implementing standalone RCTs for multiple, individual interventions would be slow, cumbersome and expensive. This paper describes the protocol for an innovative experimental birth cohort: Born in Bradford's Better Start (BiBBS) that will simultaneously evaluate the impact of multiple early life

Peritoneal dialysis in the pediatric intensive care unit setting: techniques, quantitations and outcomes.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in pediatric and neonatal intensive care units (ICU). Renal replacement therapy (RRT) is frequently needed in children in whom supportive therapy is not enough to satisfy their metabolic demands or to be able to provide adequate nutrition. The decision to begin dialysis should not be delayed since experience in infants shows that the shorter the time from the insult to the beginning of dialysis, the higher the survival rate. As the use of continuous RRT in pediatric patients in the ICU has almost tripled, the use of peritoneal dialysis (PD) an

Parsing heterogeneity in autism spectrum disorders: visual scanning of dynamic social scenes in school-aged children.

OBJECTIVE: To examine patterns of variability in social visual engagement and their relationship to standardized measures of social disability in a heterogeneous sample of school-aged children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). METHOD: Eye-tracking measures of visual fixation during free-viewing of dynamic social scenes were obtained for 109 children with ASD (mean age, 10.2 ± 3.2 years), 37 of whom were matched with 26 typically-developing (TD) children (mean age, 9.5 ± 2.2 years) on gender, age, and IQ. The smaller subset allowed between-group comparisons, whereas the larger group was us

Intact implicit learning in autism spectrum conditions.

Individuals with autism spectrum condition (ASC) have diagnostic impairments in skills that are associated with an implicit acquisition; however, it is not clear whether ASC individuals show specific implicit learning deficits. We compared ASC and typically developing (TD) individuals matched for IQ on five learning tasks: four implicit learning tasks--contextual cueing, serial reaction time, artificial grammar learning, and probabilistic classification learning tasks--that used procedures expressly designed to minimize the use of explicit strategies, and one comparison explicit learning task,

Atypical lexical/semantic processing in high-functioning autism spectrum disorders without early language delay.

Although autism is associated with impaired language functions, the nature of semantic processing in high-functioning pervasive developmental disorders (HFPDD) without a history of early language delay has been debated. In this study, we aimed to examine whether the automatic lexical/semantic aspect of language is impaired or intact in these population. Eleven individuals with Asperger's Disorder (AS) or HFPDD-Not Otherwise Specified (NOS) and age-, IQ-, and gender-matched typically developing individuals performed a semantic decision task in four conditions using an indirect priming paradigm.

Theoretical influences on research on language development and intervention in individuals with mental retardation.

In this article, we consider the theoretical debates and frameworks that have shaped research on language development and intervention in persons with mental retardation over the past four decades. Our starting point is the nativist theory, which has been espoused most forcefully by Chomsky. We also consider more recent alternatives to the nativist approach, including the social-interactionist and emergentist approaches, which have been developed largely within the field of child language research. We also consider the implications for language development and intervention of the genetic syndr

Impact of HIV on childhood respiratory illness: differences between developing and developed countries.

The main differences of the impact of HIV on childhood respiratory illness between developed and developing countries, and particularly some countries in Africa, are the scale of the problem and the lack of resources to address problems of prevention, diagnosis, and management. Recent data from HIV-infected African children are reviewed and show that the pattern of respiratory disease in these children is not markedly different to the pattern that was reported from the USA and Europe prior to the use of antiretroviral therapy and routine Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP) prophylaxis for HI

Management of pediatric patients with DSD and ambiguous genitalia: Balancing the child's moral claims to self-determination with parental values and preferences.

INTRODUCTION: A central ethical dilemma in management of the patient with a disorder of sex development (DSD) is the potential conflict between respect for the fundamental right of the child for physical and emotional integrity and self-determination, and the right of parents to serve as surrogate decision-makers and act in their child's best interest. METHODS: Over the past 2 years we have encountered three complex DSD cases on the spectrum of mixed gonadal dysgenesis to ovotesticular DSD in which gender assignment and therefore optimal surgical management was uncertain. All patients had mos

Feasibility and Accuracy of Caregiver-Led Child Growth Measurements for Remote Healthcare.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Remote healthcare is expanding, with accurate growth data essential for nutritional care. Guidance for routine caregiver-led measurements is limited and largely untested. This study evaluated the feasibility and accuracy of caregiver-led child growth measurements at home, compared to 'gold-standard' measurements in the hospital. METHODS: Caregivers of children attending outpatient appointments completed a survey on their access to weighing scales and tape measures at home. Those with suitable equipment were consented to participate in a home measurement study. Using provi

ManyNumbers 3: A Multi-Lab Study of Demographic Correlates of Early Number Knowledge.

Large scale studies have documented socioeconomic (SES) and racial/ethnic disparities in children's standardized math achievement at kindergarten entry. These early math skills predict future mathematics achievement and career success. However, limited research has been conducted using large sample sizes to understand how SES and race/ethnicity are related to children's numerical skills at even younger ages. The current study aims to investigate sociodemographic variability in three fundamental areas of early numeracy: nonverbal numerosity discrimination, rote counting, and cardinal number wor

Factors associated to motor development in Down syndrome patients.
