Variation in the composition of gingival inflammatory cell infiltrates.

Biopsy specimens were taken at gingivectomy from 18 adult patients undergoing treatment for chronic marginal periodontitis. They were embedded so that the cut surface of the gingiva was parallel to the top of the block to obtain a comprehensive view in a transversal plane of the inflammatory cell infiltrate near the bottom of the pocket. Sections were stained with HES or with toluidine blue for histological description, and acid alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) was used to differentially stain T lymphocytes, plasma cells and monocytes/macrophages. Sections stained with HES showed that th

Bariatric surgery and implications for oral health: a case report.

A case representative of issues dental practitioners may face when providing care to patients with a history of bariatric surgery is reviewed. Meta-analysis shows that, following bariatric surgery, 43 to 79% of diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hypertension in patients resolved to normal levels or no longer required therapy. However, bariatric surgery side effects have implications for oral health, including nutrient deficiencies impacting healing of oral tissues and gastroesophageal reflux, resulting in tooth erosion. Patients who have undergone bariatric surgery are seen with increasing frequency

[Status of bacterial colonization in infected root canal].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the morphology, distribution and relative position of the bacteria in infected root canals with chronic apical periodontitis and make some clinical inferences. METHODS: Seven extracted roots with chronic apical periodontitis were collected. Immediately after extraction, all specimens were rinsed in sterile saline solution. The remaining tooth crowns were cut off with carborundum disks under water spray. Longitudinal grooves following the root length axis were cut along the entire root by using tapered diamond burs under water spray, and the roots were then split with

Punica granatum peel extract as adjunct irrigation to nonsurgical treatment of chronic gingivitis.

Pomegranate is one of the most universally studied medicinal plants for its ethnomedical history, with several studies presenting the positive outcome of its use or its extracts in managing inflammation. The objective of the present trial was to investigate the efficiency of the traditionally used 5% of pomegranate peel extract in treating gingival inflammation. Herein, 34 chronic gingivitis patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio for four weeks in a controlled, double-blind clinical trial to evaluate the effect of the adjunctive use of a pulsating jet irrigator containing 5% pomegranate peel

Arthritis and Periodontitis: An Association Debated for Over Two Centuries.

The chronic diseases, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and periodontal disease (PD) lead to confined destruction of soft and hard tissues as a result of inflammatory processes. Their pathogenesis is dictated by a network of inflammatory cells and its mediators. They also share some etiological risk factors and therapeutic alternatives. The evolution of focal infection theory is summarized in this review, with special reference to PD and its relationship to RA. Foci of chronic infections exist in the oral cavity and may result in anatomically distant disease in certain individuals. Recent cumulative e

Oral complications of cancer therapy.

The mouth is a frequent site of complications arising from drug or radiation cancer therapy, with mucositis, xerostomia, osteoradionecrosis, and local infections being the most common. From the stand-point of dose limitation, treatment breaks, quality of life, and health economic outcomes, mucositis is the most significant acute oral toxicity. Xerostomia, a chronic side effect of radiation, involves the salivary gland tissue, and results in changes in taste, tissue resilience, and an increased risk of caries and periodontal disease. While the incidence of osteoradionecrosis seems to be decreas

FOXO1-mediated cell cycle arrest enhances osteogenic differentiation of spheroid-cultured human periodontal ligament-derived multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by progressive alveolar bone loss. Although spheroid culture enhances the osteogenic and regenerative potential of human periodontal ligament-derived multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (hPDLMSCs), the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the transcriptional features of spheroid-cultured hPDLMSCs, with a particular focus on cell cycle regulation and Forkhead Box O (FOXO) transcription factors. METHODS: Monolayer- and spheroid-cultured hPDLMSCs were subjected to transcriptom

Taiwanese green propolis suppresses NLRP3 inflammasome activation and induces Nrf2/HO-1 pathway to reduce periodontal pathogen-induced endothelial inflammation.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with systemic conditions, including cardiovascular diseases. Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), a key periodontal pathogen, contributes to vascular endothelial dysfunction through its virulence factors. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of Taiwanese green propolis (TGP) against Pg-derived lipopolysaccharide (Pg-LPS)-induced endothelial inflammation, focusing on its modulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathways. DESIGN: Human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) were stimulated with Pg-LP

Graph-Contrastive Convolutional Neural Network for Extracting and Classifying Peptide-Based Periodontal Immunomodulatory and Anti-Inflammatory Signatures.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the body's immune system fails to respond properly to microbial biofilms. Peptides exhibiting anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties are promising as biomarkers and therapeutic agents; however, identifying functional peptide signatures remains a significant challenge due to sequence variability and limited data availability. The aim of this study was to develop a graph-contrastive convolutional neural network (GCCNN) framework for accurately categorizing periodontitis-related peptides into immunomodulator

Oral Microbe Community and Pyramid Scene Parsing Network-based Periodontitis Risk Prediction.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis (PD) is a common chronic inflammatory disease affecting the gums and supporting tooth structures. It is often diagnosed only after significant irreversible tissue damage - such as gum recession and bone loss - has occurred, leading to tooth loss and systemic complications. Early detection of PD risk is therefore critical. This study integrates the Pyramid Scene Parsing Network (PSPNet), a deep learning model, with dental plaque microbial profiling data to generate a Periodontitis Risk Score (PRS) for identifying individuals at high risk of developing PD. METHODS: Mic

Peri-implantitis with a potential axis to brain inflammation: an inferential review.

Peri-implantitis (PI) is a chronic, inflammatory, and infectious disease which affects dental implants and has certain similarities to periodontitis (PD). Evidence has shown that PD may be related to several types of systemic disorders, such as diabetes and insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory tract infections, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and neurological disorders. Furthermore, some types of bacteria in PD can also be found in PI, leading to certain similarities in the immunoinflammatory responses in the host. This review aims to discuss the possible connection between PI

Oral health status and knowledge among 10-15years old type 1 diabetes mellitus children and adolescents in Bengaluru.

CONTEXT: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic systemic metabolic disease. This disorder affects mainly children and adolescents. The main complications of diabetes mellitus affect the organs and tissues rich in capillary vessels such as kidney, retina, and nerves. These complications are secondary to the development of microangiopathy. Similar changes in small vessels can be found in the oral tissues. There is a significant increase in gingival inflammation and plaque seen in children with T1DM. AIMS: The aim of this study is to assess the oral health status and knowledge among T1DM c

Searching Deep and Wide: Advances in the Molecular Understanding of Dental Caries and Periodontal Disease.

During the past decades, remarkable progress has been made in the understanding of the molecular basis of the 2 most common oral diseases, dental caries and periodontal disease. Improvements in our knowledge of the diseases' underlying biology have illuminated previously unrecognized aspects of their pathogenesis. Importantly, the key role of the oral (supragingival and subgingival) microbiome is now well recognized, and both diseases are now best understood as dysbiotic. From a host susceptibility standpoint, some progress has been made in dissecting the "hyperinflammatory" trait and other pa

Catecholamines promote the expression of virulence and oxidative stress genes in Porphyromonas gingivalis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Stress has been identified as an important risk factor in the development of many infectious diseases, including periodontitis. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a gram-negative oral anaerobic bacterium, is considered an important pathogen in chronic periodontitis. Microorganisms, including P. gingivalis, that participate in infectious diseases have been shown to respond to catecholamines released during stress processes by modifying their growth and virulence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline on the growth, anti

Is marginal bone loss around oral implants the result of a provoked foreign body reaction?

BACKGROUND: When a foreign body is placed in bone or soft tissue, an inflammatory reaction inevitably develops. Hence, osseointegration is but a foreign body response to the implant, which according to classic pathology is a chronic inflammatory response and characterized by bone embedding/separation of the implant from the body. PURPOSE: The aim of this paper is to suggest an alternative way of looking at the reason for marginal bone loss as a complication to treatment rather than a disease process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present paper is authored as a narrative review contribution. RE
