Sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic and opioid medicament use and its co-occurrence with tobacco smoking and alcohol risk drinking in a community sample.

BACKGROUND: Sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic and opioid medicament (SO) use and its relation to tobacco smoking and alcohol risk drinking is largely unknown. Prevalence data for SO intake and its co-occurrence with tobacco smoking and alcohol risk drinking considering age are presented. METHODS: Random general population sample of individuals aged 20-79 drawn from a mixed rural and urban area in Germany (Study of Health in Pomerania, SHIP). All medicament intake during the past 7 days prior to the interview was assessed according to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification as part of

Smoking and alcohol in the etiology of oral cancer: gender-specific risk profiles in the south of Greece.

Oral and pharyngeal cancer (OC) mortality is very low in Greece, especially among men, compared to other European countries. We conducted a case-control study of OC in Athens, and obtained information on tobacco, alcohol use and other potential risk factors and confounding variables for 110 incident cases and 115 hospital-based controls. We used multivariate logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Tobacco smoking (pack years, P(trend)=0.01) and alcohol use (drinks/week, P(trend)=0.07) were independent risk factors, with a multiplicative effect for

Sympathoadrenal activity and psychosocial stress. The significance of aging, long-term smoking, and stress models.

Recent studies have indicated that the increase in plasma norepinephrine and sympathetic activity with aging in healthy subjects is largely due to long-term cigarette smoking. In patients who have or have had duodenal ulcer the increase in plasma norepinephrine with age was markedly increased. These patients as a group perceive their lives somewhat more stressful than the general population and they tend to die prematurely due to smoking-associated diseases. These patients may select dysfunctional coping strategies like smoking, which may result in organ pathologies and a compensatory increase

Hostility and health behaviors in young adults: the CARDIA Study. Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study.

Hostility has been associated with coronary heart disease mortality. To assess possible mechanisms linking hostility to coronary heart disease risk, the authors conducted analyses in a cross-sectional study from data collected in 1985 and 1986 on 5,115 young adults, aged 18-30 years, black and white, male and female, in four large urban areas of the United States. The results show that higher levels of hostility as determined by the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale were strongly associated with tobacco and marijuana smoking, increased alcohol consumption, and greater caloric intake in both blacks a

Risk factors for stroke and myocardial infarction in women in the United Kingdom as assessed in general practice: a case-control study.

Data available in the United Kingdom through the Medical Research Council's General Practice Research Framework were recorded in a study of 603 women aged 45-69 with confirmed diagnoses of stroke or myocardial infarction, each matched by age with two controls. Current cigarette smoking and a family history of myocardial infarction were both strongly associated with the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction, with relative risks of 2.47 (95% confidence interval 1.89 to 3.23) and 1.93 (95% confidence interval 1.52 to 2.44) respectively. The relative risks associated with past smoking decreased

Tobacco smoking, coffee drinking, and occupation as risk factors for bladder cancer in Greece.

Patients with bladder cancer (250 males and 50 females), consecutively admitted during a 2-year period in the major cancer hospital of Athens, and an equal number of age- and gender-matched comparison patients with orthopedic conditions were interviewed regarding demographic, socioeconomic, and biomedical characteristics, including their occupations and their use of coffee and tobacco prior to the onset of their present disease or condition. Analyses of the data showed that cigarette smoking is an important, statistically significant and dose-dependent risk factor for bladder cancer, particula

The Effect of Smoking on Spinal Fusion.

BACKGROUND: Spinal fusion surgery is performed about half a million times per year in the United States and millions more worldwide. It is an effective method for reducing pain, increasing stability, and correcting deformity in patients with various spinal conditions. In addition to being a well-established risk factor for a variety of medical conditions, smoking has deleterious effects on the bone healing of spinal fusions. This review aims to specifically analyze the ways in which smoking affects the outcomes of spinal fusion and to explore ways in which these negative consequences can be av

Polysubstance Use Trajectories and Social-Ecological Predictors in a Multi-Ethnic Sample of Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Substance use-including the use and co-use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs-often emerges in adolescence. However, the longitudinal structure of polysubstance use and its social-ecological predictors are less understood. We examined (a) higher-order trajectories of polysubstance use (encompassing alcohol, cigarette, and illicit drug use) and (b) their associations with individual- and family-level factors. METHODS: Participants were 568 eighth- and tenth graders (M age = 14.46; 50.5% girls) from Miami-Dade County, FL, and Prince George's County, MD, in a six-wave longitud

Nicotine and Toxicant Exposure among Individuals using both Combustible Cigarettes and E-cigarettes Based on Level of Product Use.

INTRODUCTION: Dual use of combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes is the most common multiple tobacco-use behavior in the United States, but its long-term health impact remains unclear. Biomarkers of exposure (BOE) can help identify potential health risks of dual use. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2,679 adult participants from Wave 5 of the Population Assessment on Tobacco and Health Study, a U.S. nationally representative study, including individuals reporting current exclusive cigarette use (n = 1,913), exclusive e-cigarette use (n = 316), and dual use (n = 450). Association of cigarette and electronic nicotine delivery systems use with internalizing and externalizing problems among US adults: Findings from wave 3 (2015-2016) of the PATH study.

AIMS: Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) use is increasing among US adults. While existing research has demonstrated higher cigarette smoking rates among people with mental health conditions, there is sparse information on the association between ENDS use and mental health such as internalizing and externalizing problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate associations between internalizing and externalizing problems for cigarette only, ENDS only, and dual users, as well as changes in mental health among those groups. METHOD: We used the U.S. Population Assessment of Tobacco and He

XPC protects against smoking- and carcinogen-induced lung adenocarcinoma.

Cigarette smoke (CS) contains hundreds of carcinogens and is a potent inducer of oxidative and bulky DNA damage, which when insufficiently repaired leads to activation of DNA damage response and possibly mutations. The DNA repair protein xeroderma pigmentosum group C (XPC) is primed to play an important role in CS-induced DNA damage because of its function in initiating repair of both bulky oxidative DNA damage. We hypothesized that loss of XPC function will increase susceptibility to developing CS- and carcinogen-induced lung cancer through impaired repair of oxidative DNA damage. Mice defici

Relationship of tobacco smoking to cause-specific mortality: contemporary estimates from Australia.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco industry activities and reduced smoking prevalence can foster under-appreciation of risks and under-investment in tobacco control. Reliable evidence on contemporary smoking impacts, including cause-specific mortality and attributable deaths, remains critical. METHODS: Prospective study of 178,169 cancer- and cardiovascular-disease-free individuals aged ≥ 45 years joining the 45 and Up Study in 2005-2009, with linked questionnaire, hospitalisation, cancer registry and death data to November 2017. Clinical, laboratory and genetic factors associated with smoking in a Brazilian Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is associated with increased morbidity among individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). While genetic factors influencing smoking behavior have been identified in other populations, they have not been studied in individuals with SCD. This study aimed to assess the impact of smoking on clinical and laboratory parameters in a large SCD cohort and to identify genetic variants potentially associated with smoking behavior in this population. METHODS: The Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-III (REDS-III) Brazil SCD cohort was established across six Brazilian citi

[INTERVENTIONS FOR SUPPORTING WOMEN TO STOP SMOKING IN PREGNANCY].

Smoking during pregnancy is a public health problem because of the many adverse effects associated with it. These include intrauterine growth restriction, placenta previa, abruptio placentae, decreased maternal thyroid function, preterm premature rupture of membranes, low birth weight, perinatal mortality, and ectopic pregnancy. An estimated 5-8% of pre-term deliveries, 13-19% of term deliveries of infants with low birth weight, 23-34% cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and 5-7% of preterm-related infant deaths can be attributed to prenatal maternal smoking. The risks of smoking dur

Extended varenicline treatment in a severe cardiopathic cigarette smoker: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and quitting tobacco use should be fundamental for cardiovascular patients. Varenicline is a smoking cessation pharmacological therapy able to improve the possibilities to successfully achieve this result. In 2011 the US Food and Drug Administration issued a safety announcement that varenicline may be associated with an increased risk of certain cardiovascular adverse events in patients who have cardiovascular disease. Following studies found no significant increase in cardiovascular serious adverse ev

Smoking-related correlates of depressive symptom dimensions in treatment-seeking smokers.

INTRODUCTION: The symptomatic heterogeneity of depression poses a barrier to understanding the smoking-depression relationship. Different types of depressive symptoms have evidenced disparate relations to smoking. Yet, depression measures employed in past depression-smoking research yield symptom subdimensions, which may not be sufficiently comprehensive or distinct. Confidence in nicotine for tobacco harm reduction-Bridging the policy-practice gap.

Decades of research show that constituents other than nicotine are the harmful agents in tobacco products. This knowledge is incorporated into the nicotine regulatory policies of countries leading in tobacco control, such as the UK and New Zealand. Alternative nicotine products, such as nicotine replacement therapy and e-cigarettes, are now endorsed in the UK by a number of healthcare bodies in a tobacco harm reduction approach that encourages tobacco users to completely switch to a less risky nicotine-containing product. The potential role of 'clean' nicotine alternatives to reduce the harms
