The benefit of genomics lies in the speeding up of research efforts in other fields of biology, including neurobiology. Through accelerated progress in positional cloning and genetic mapping, genomics has forced us to confront at a much faster pace the difficult problem of defining gene function. Presenilin 2 (PS2) is a gene responsible for the early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (AD). PS2 mutations are considered to be closely related to the pathogenesis of AD.
