Timing and Duration of Prediabetic Metabolic Dysfunction Differentially Impact Cerebral Perfusion, Vascular Structure, and Behavior.

Obesity is a major risk factor for metabolic dysfunction and cognitive decline, yet the influence of age of onset and sex on neurovascular outcomes remains unclear. We examined how the age at initiation and duration of diet-induced obesity influence metabolism, cognition, and cerebrovascular perfusion in male and female mice. A high-fat diet increased body weight and impaired glucose regulation, particularly in females. Obesity selectively impaired recognition memory while sparing spatial working memory. Cerebrovascular effects were region- and age-specific. Early- and mid-life obesity produce

Timely coupling of sleep spindles and slow waves linked to early amyloid-β burden and predicts memory decline.

Sleep alteration is a hallmark of ageing and emerges as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). While the fine-tuned coalescence of sleep microstructure elements may influence age-related cognitive trajectories, its association with AD processes is not fully established. Here, we investigated whether the coupling of spindles and slow waves (SW) is associated with early amyloid-β (Aβ) brain burden, a hallmark of AD neuropathology, and cognitive change over 2 years in 100 healthy individuals in late-midlife (50-70 years; 68 women). We found that, in contrast to other sleep metrics, earlier o

[The speech audiometry test with the verbal tasks and motor responses].

The objective of the present study was to estimate the possibility of using the Russian version of the speech audiometry test with the verbal tasks and motor responses (VTMR test) for the examination of the patients of the advanced and senile age suffering from hearing impairment and cognitive disorders. A total of 20 subjects at the age between 60 and 83 years were enrolled in the study. All of them presented with grade II-III bilateral symmetric chronic sensorineural hearing loss associated with mild cognitive disorders. The patients used the hearing aids. Twelve subjects aged 64-88 years pr

Cognitive abilities associated with the Silver-Russell syndrome.

There is no consensus opinion on whether or not cognitive impairments are found in the Silver-Russell syndrome. An investigation of a substantial sample was undertaken, using standardised assessments, in 20 boys and five girls aged 6.0 years to 11.8 years. Mean (SD) birth weights were -2.65 (0.95) SD scores, corrected for gestation. At evaluation the children had a mean (SD) age of 8.8 (1.8) years and a mean height of -2.26 (1.5) SD scores. Tests of cognitive abilities included assessments of general intelligence, reading and arithmetic attainments, and a cognitive processing task. Most had so

Cognition attenuates the relationship between insufficient subjective energy and lower physical activity differentially across European regions.

BACKGROUND: Previous evidence suggests that higher cognitive performance may buffer the negative effects of insufficient subjective energy availability (SEA) on physical activity (PA) engagement. However, regional differences in opportunities, social norms, and contextual demands across Europe may influence this relationship, indicating that the interplay between SEA, cognition, and PA may not be universal. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether cognitive performance moderates the association between SEA and PA in Europeans aged 50+, and to explore potential differences across the four European r

Cognitive and social impairments in patients with superficial siderosis.

Superficial siderosis of the CNS is a rare condition, caused by deposition of haemosiderin in the superficial layers of the CNS due to repeated chronic subarachnoid or intraventricular haemorrhage. Typically, the hindbrain structures, especially the cerebellum, are most affected. There is a surprising lack of studies investigating in detail the behavioural functioning of patients with such a condition. In this study, we document for the first time the cognitive, social and emotional processing of six patients with a confirmed clinical diagnosis of superficial siderosis. They were aged between

Correlation of cognitive functions of hypertensive patients on different classes of antihypertensive drugs.

BACKGROUND: Globally, cognitive impairment has evolved as a major health and social issue. Hypertension, age, and stroke are independent risk factors for the development of cognitive impairment. Elderly individuals with hypertension are more prone to earlier cognitive decline. The risk is reduced by proper antihypertensive treatment. Various classes of antihypertensive drugs have varied protective effects on cognition, so we aimed to compare the cognitive scores of individuals taking different classes of antihypertensive drugs and correlate the blood pressure levels with their cognitive scores

Socioeconomic position, family context, and child cognitive development.

Socioeconomic position (SEP) may have different effects on cognitive development and family context could play a role in this association. This work aimed to analyse the role of socioeconomic positions, measured via various indicators collected longitudinally, in cognitive development at 7-11 years of age, evaluating the role of family context as a potential mediator. The study sample included 394 and 382 children from the INMA Gipuzkoa and Valencia cohorts, respectively. SEP indicators were assessed during pregnancy (family social class, parental education, employment, and disposable income)

Clinical and individual features associated with maternal stress in young adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Parents of people with autism spectrum disorder experience both negative stressful and positive events. Several clinical and socio-demographic features of children on the autism spectrum have been associated with parenting stress in their families. However, there have been few studies that focus on adolescents and the role of cognitive impairment has rarely been addressed. The main aim of the present research is to explore associations between autism symptoms, cognitive impairment, emotional and behavioral problems, socio-demographic features, and maternal stress in a sample of young adolescen

Brooding rumination predicts lower cognitive functioning in late-life depression: multivariate multiple regression analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Late-life depression (LLD) is associated with cognitive deficits, particularly in memory and executive functions. Rumination, namely brooding, may also negatively impact cognition. Few studies have investigated multivariate relationships between depressive symptoms and different types of rumination on cognition in LLD, which was the focus of the current study. We also explored whether relationships differed by gender and depression age of onset. METHOD: Cognition was measured via five cognitive composites (Attention/Working Memory, Processing Speed, Language, Episodic Recall, an

Active Seizures Predict Worse Instrumental Activities of Daily Living in Individuals With Normal Cognition and Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive disorders are common in older persons with seizures (PWS). Cognitive disorders are often associated with impaired Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). However, the effects of seizures on IADLs remain unexplored. This study (9/2005-3/2024) from 42 US Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers examined baseline and longitudinal IADL decline in cognitively normal and cognitively impaired participants grouped as active seizures (past 12 months), remote seizures (history but none in 12 months), and controls (no seizures). METHODS: Pfeffer Functional Activities Questionn

The Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome in Ataxia-Telangiectasia.

Ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) is an autosomal recessive, multisystem disease causing cerebellar ataxia, mucocutaneous telangiectasias, immunodeficiency, and malignancies. A pilot study reported cognitive and behavioral manifestations characteristic of the cerebellar cognitive affective / Schmahmann syndrome (CCAS). We set out to test and further define these observations because a more comprehensive understanding of the spectrum of impairments in AT is essential for optimal management. Twenty patients (12 males; 9.86 ± 5.5 years, range 4.3 to 23.2) were grouped by age: AT-I (toddlers and preschoo

On the same wavelength: The relationship between neural synchrony and cognitive ability during movie watching in late childhood and early adolescence.

Cognitive development in late childhood and adolescence occurs alongside increasingly complex environments. To examine how cognitive abilities relate to neural processing of naturalistic experiences, we analyzed fMRI data from 309 children and adolescents (ages 7-15; majority White) in the Healthy Brain Biobank. Participants watched a 10-minute clip of Despicable Me during scanning and completed the WISC. Intersubject correlation (ISC) was used to measure brain synchrony during viewing. Adolescents (11-15) with higher cognitive scores showed greater ISC in default mode and frontoparietal netwo

[Somatic factors in cognitive impairment].

Mild cognitive impairment describes a cognitive decline greater than expected for an individual's age and education level that does not interfere significantly with activities of daily life. In the recent years concepts of "mild cognitive impairment" with divergent definitions have been discussed as potential preclinical forms of dementia. The etiology of cognitive impairment is heterogeneous and it can be promoted or caused by numerous somatic factors. Relevant somatic factors include hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart failure, chronic obstructive airways disease and bronchial asthma. Cog

Cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis: Where do we stand today?

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic landscape of multiple sclerosis (MS) has evolved substantially with earlier diagnosis and increasing use of highly effective disease-modifying therapies, leading to marked reductions in relapse activity and delayed disability progression. Despite these advances, cognitive impairment remains highly prevalent. OBJECTIVE: This topical review summarises current evidence on cognitive impairment in MS, from the earliest and preclinical stages to paediatric and ageing populations. RESULTS: Particular emphasis is placed on emerging data-driven cognitive phenotypes, which
