The current study aimed to reveal the pathogenic and spreading mechanisms of community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus (CA-SA) by analyzing its prevalence, drug resistance, virulence, and pathogenic factors. Historical information regarding CA skin and soft tissue infections were collected and disease characteristics were analyzed. Isolated CA-SA strains were subjected to antibiotic sensitivity tests using the agar dilution method, Staphylococcus cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) tests, multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and staphylococcal protein A (SPA) and toxin gene screening. A total of 55

Community-acquired acute kidney injury (AKI) in developing tropical countries is markedly different from AKI in developed countries with a temperate climate, which exemplifies the influence that environment can have on the epidemiology of human diseases. The aetiology and presentation of AKI reflect the ethnicity, socioeconomic factors, climatic and ecological characteristics in tropical countries. Tropical zones are characterized by high year-round temperatures and the absence of frost, which supports the propagation of infections that can cause AKI, including malaria, leptospirosis, HIV and

With increasing population displacement and worsening water insecurity after the 2010 earthquake, Haiti experienced a large cholera outbreak. Our goal was to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of seven community health facilities' ability to respond to a surge in cholera cases. Since 2010, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) with a number of public and private donors has been working with seven health facilities in an effort to reduce morbidity and mortality from cholera infection. In November 2012, CRS through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s support, asked the Johns Hopki

This paper deals largely with the dynamics and changes in the helminth parasite communities of fish along the trophic gradient of lakes. The use of parasitological community data as a bioindicator of environmental health underlines the need to study parasite communities at comparable localities with known pollution levels. The comparison of the conditions in different habitats might be helpful to differentiate between normal fluctuations in ambient conditions and pollution-mediated effects. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine the community structure of parasites in snow trout

BACKGROUND: "True" posterior communicating artery (PCOM) aneurysms are rare variants in which the aneurysm arises solely from the PCOM rather than the junction of the internal carotid artery and the PCOM.
METHODS: It is critical to note that for true PCOM aneurysms, the neck arises distal to the origin of the PCOM and therefore lies in what is traditionally an intra-operative blind spot. The PCOM must be followed posteriorly to visualise the aneurysm neck for microsurgical clipping.
CONCLUSIONS: A thorough pre-operative understanding of this unique anatomy is essential in minimising morbidit

BACKGROUND: Giant posterior communicating artery (PCoA) aneurysms (> 25 mm) are rare lesions associated with a poor prognosis and high rates of morbidity and mortality.
OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical results of giant PCoA aneurysms surgically treated at our institution, focusing on operative nuances.
METHODS: All cases of giant PCoA aneurysms treated surgically at our institution were identified from a prospectively maintained patient database. Patient demographic factors, medical comorbidities, rupture status, neurological presentation, clinical outcomes, and surgical records were critic

Nurses have a professional duty to provide care for all patients regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. As Christian nurses, we are called by our profession and faith to welcome and care for those who are stigmatized by others. This article defines LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender), offers reasons why LGBT persons are at risk for healthcare disparities, discusses referral of LGBT persons to healthcare resources, and states ways to be more welcoming for LGBT persons in a faith setting.

The purpose of this study was to test the factor structure of the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional Traits (ICU; Frick, 2004 ) and to study the relation between the derived dimensions and external variables in a community sample of preschool children. A total of 622 children 3 and 4 years of age were assessed with a semistructured diagnostic interview, the ICU, and other questionnaires on psychopathology, temperament, and executive functioning, completed by parents and teachers. Confirmatory factor analysis derived from teachers' ICU responses yielded three dimensions: Callousness, Uncaring, an

OBJECTIVE: Contingency management (CM) is an evidence-based treatment, but few clinicians deliver this intervention in community-based settings.
METHOD: Twenty-three clinicians from 3 methadone maintenance clinics received training in CM. Following a didactics seminar and a training and supervision period in which clinicians delivered CM to pilot patients, a randomized trial evaluated the efficacy of CM when delivered entirely by clinicians. Sixteen clinicians treated 130 patients randomized to CM or standard care. In both conditions, urine and breath samples were collected twice weekly for 1

Dehalococcoides bacteria are the only organisms known to completely reduce chlorinated ethenes to the harmless product ethene. However, Dehalococcoides dechlorinate these chemicals more effectively and grow more robustly in mixed microbial communities than in isolation. In this study, the phylogenetic composition and gene content of a functionally stable trichloroethene-degrading microbial community was examined using metagenomic sequencing and analysis. For phylogenetic classification, contiguous sequences (contigs) longer than 2500 bp were grouped into classes according to tetranucleotide fr

Accurate quantification of blood loss is an essential skill necessary to prevent maternal morbidity and mortality associated with obstetric hemorrhage. Visual estimation of blood has been consistently shown to be extremely inaccurate. The nurse plays a pivotal role in quantifying blood loss after birth, recognizing triggers, mobilizing needed interventions, and providing essential communication.

BACKGROUND: By 2005, vaccination had reduced the annual incidence of mumps in the United States by more than 99%, with few outbreaks reported. However, in 2006, a large outbreak occurred among highly vaccinated populations in the United States, and similar outbreaks have been reported worldwide. The outbreak described in this report occurred among U.S. Orthodox Jewish communities during 2009 and 2010.
METHODS: Cases of salivary-gland swelling and other symptoms clinically compatible with mumps were investigated, and demographic, clinical, laboratory, and vaccination data were evaluated.
