Progress of children with severe acute malnutrition in the malnutrition treatment centre rehabilitation program: evidence from a prospective study in Jharkhand, India.

BACKGROUND: In Jharkhand, Malnutrition Treatment Centres (MTCs) have been established to provide care to children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The study examined the effects of facility- and community based care provided as part the MTC program on children with severe acute malnutrition. METHOD: A cohort of 150 children were enrolled and interviewed by trained investigators at admission, discharge, and after two months on the completion of the community-based phase of the MTC program. Trained investigators collected data on diet, morbidity, anthropometry, and utilization of health an

The zoonotic potential of Clostridium difficile from small companion animals and their owners.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) in humans range from asymptomatic carriage to life-threatening intestinal disease. Findings on C. difficile in various animal species and an overlap in ribotypes (RTs) suggest potential zoonotic transmission. However, the impact of animals for human CDI remains unclear. METHODS: In a large-scale survey we collected 1,447 fecal samples to determine the occurrence of C. difficile in small companion animals (dogs and cats) and their owners and to assess potential epidemiological links within the community. The Germany-wide survey was conducted f

Northern innovation in rabies prevention and control: The Weeneebayko Area Health Authorities (WAHA) dog population management pilot project.

BACKGROUND: Remote northern communities in Ontario face unique challenges in rabies prevention and control. With large, free-roaming dog populations at high risk of exposure to rabies from wildlife, and a lack of regular access to veterinary services and vaccinations, these communities run a higher risk of human exposure to rabies than southern regions of the province. OBJECTIVE: To provide the baseline data on a novel approach to controlling the dog population in the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) in northern Ontario, implemented as part of a sustainable, humane and cost-effective

Prevalence of periodic limb movements during sleep in normal children.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Although the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) mandates that periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS) be scored on every polysomnogram, and considers a periodic limb movement index (PLMI) > 5/h abnormal in children, there is a lack of community-derived data regarding the prevalence of PLMS in children, and no data to support this cutoff value. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of PLMS in a sample of normal children. DESIGN: Retrospective study. PARTICIPANTS: 195 healthy, non-snoring children aged 5-17 years, recruited from the commu

Multiple perspectives on tobacco use among youth with mental health disorders and addictions.

PURPOSE: Youth and young adults with mental health disorders and addictions are at a high risk of becoming nicotine dependent, and at least half will die of tobacco-related diseases. In comparison to the general population, this population also faces neurobiological and psychosocial vulnerabilities. There is a critical need for community services and research targeting tobacco interventions for these individuals. METHODS: A concurrent mixed methods study was conducted by collecting data from in-depth key informant interviews, focus groups, and a survey. Qualitative key informant interviews wi

Places and health: a qualitative study to explore how older women living alone perceive the social and physical dimensions of their neighbourhoods.

There is growing interest in the impact that neighbourhood environment might have on the health of older people. Although the number of older Australian women, particularly those living alone, is projected to increase in coming decades, their experiences of neighbourhood have not been exclusively examined. The aims of this paper are: (1) to explore, from the perspective of these women, the social and physical dimensions of neighbourhoods and (2) to investigate variation in these accounts according to whether women lived in areas of higher or lower socioeconomic status. Twenty women aged betwee

Consumption of vitamin A by breastfeeding children in rural Kenya.

Vitamin A deficiency remains a significant health risk in developing countries, affecting infants and children in particular. To counter child malnutrition, mothers are encouraged to breastfeed to ensure that their children receive adequate macro- and micronutrients, including vitamin A. However, this assumes that the mother has sufficient vitamin A intake to provide enough vitamin A to her child. This study investigates maternal and infant intakes of locally available foods of high vitamin A content in a rural agricultural community in Kenya. The study aims to establish the community risk for

Preventing HIV infection: the effects of community linkages, time, and money on recruiting and retaining women in intervention groups.

Few studies have addressed recruitment and retention of participants in preventive interventions directed at human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and these generally have not focused on women. In this study, part of the Women in Group Support (WINGS) project, we examine the experience of three sites in recruiting 444 high-risk women for a small group intervention to reduce risky sexual behavior. The intervention included six structured sessions, followed by a continuing series of client-focused, drop-in sessions. Incentives for participants included child care, food, and transportation tokens.

The impact of 1,000 renal transplants at one center.

A large, comprehensive renal transplant program has a major impact not only on patient care, but also on the medical center itself and the larger community. The program at this center has advanced from 15 transplants in 1964 to 141 transplants in 1976. Fifty-nine per cent of patients transplanted have functioning kidneys at this time, including 76 children. Rehabilitation was equal to prerenal disease level in 91% of 169 recipients who lived five years with a functioning graft. Basic research in such diverse areas as renal preservation and immunology, as well as clinical research in optimum im

Feasibility of Establishing Community Living Labs (CoLLabs) to Improve Access to Prostate Health Resources, Education, Amenities, and Community Health: Protocol for a Pragmatic Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, nearly 60,000 prostate cancer (CaP) cases were reported among Black men, who face an estimated lifetime risk of approximately 1 in 6, compared with 1 in 8 among White men. The disproportionate burden of CaP in Black men has been attributed to a combination of health-system factors, variations in care processes, and individual- or patient-level determinants. Addressing these multilevel contributors will require innovative strategies to advance prostate health equity. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we discuss the protocol for assessing the feasibility of establishing a Community

A Pragmatic Trial of a Multilevel Community-Centered Intervention to Reduce Pregnancy Related and Associated Morbidity and Mortality and Disparities: A Study Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal morbidity and mortality in the US disproportionately affect some women, including the Medicaid-insured, rural, and Black, Hispanic, and Native American populations. The drivers of disparities are complex and there is an urgent need for multilevel interventions focused on pregnancy-related and associated morbidity and mortality (PRAMM). This study will be the first large-scale test of Community Health Worker (CHW) inclusive home visiting and provider/practice/system level improvement strategies that support empowered patients, pro-active providers, and integrates communit

Trachoma surveillance in Australia, 2009. A report by the National Trachoma Surveillance and Reporting Unit.

Trachoma is highly prevalent in remote Indigenous communities in Australia. The National Trachoma Surveillance and Reporting Unit was established in 2006 as a result of a Federal Government initiative to provide comprehensive surveillance data from regional and remote Indigenous communities considered by the jurisdictional population health staff to be 'At Risk' for endemic trachoma, defined as a trachoma prevalence of 5% or more. This report details the findings from the 2009 trachoma screening program together with trends in trachoma prevalence and screening coverage since 2006. Aboriginal c

Using Functional Communication Training to Reduce Self-Injurious Behavior for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have a high risk of developing self-injurious behavior (SIB), which is often a result of deficits in communication skills. The use of functional communication training (FCT) to address SIB maintained by negative reinforcement among children with ASD is supported by an emerging trend of behavioral research. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of FCT on the SIB of children with ASD and to find out if the results would be maintained during periods of nonreinforcement. The results indicated significant reduction in SIB for all three pa
