[Executive function characteristic in boys with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder comorbid disruptive behavior disorders].

OBJECTIVE: To answer the question whether executive function (EF) deficits are specific to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or whether such deficits are also associated with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD), including oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conductive disorder (CD). METHODS: A total of 19 pure ADHD boys, 19 ADHD+DBD boys and 19 normal controls (criteria of DSM-IV) were collected as our samples. The groups were matched by age (less than 6 months). The research instruments included Stroop color-word task, Rey complex figure test, digit span test, trail making

Effects of comorbid psychopathy on criminal offending and emotion processing in male offenders with antisocial personality disorder.

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and psychopathy are two syndromes with substantial construct validity. To clarify relations between these syndromes, the authors evaluated 3 possibilities: (a) that ASPD with psychopathy and ASPD without psychopathy reflect a common underlying pathophysiology; (b) that ASPD with psychopathy and ASPD without psychopathy identify 2 distinct syndromes, similar in some respects; and (c) that most correlates of ASPD reflect its comorbidity with psychopathy. Participants were 472 incarcerated European American men who met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (4th

Elevated cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels in women with comorbid depression and panic disorder.

Major depression comorbid with panic disorder has a more severe clinical picture and adverse course than either disorder alone, and both conditions are associated with abnormalities in the serotonin system. Therefore, we hypothesized that central serotonergic function in the patients with comorbid panic disorder would be more disturbed than in major depression alone. Concentrations of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) monoamine metabolites of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine were assayed by high-pressure liquid chromatography, and compared in female subjects with DSM-IV-diagnosed major depressi

Atomoxetine treatment in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and comorbid oppositional defiant disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine (1) moderating effects of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment response and (2) responses of ODD symptoms to atomoxetine. METHOD: Children and adolescents (ages 8-18) with ADHD were treated for approximately 8 weeks with placebo or atomoxetine (fixed dosing: 0.5, 1.2, or 1.8 mg/kg/day, b.i.d.) under randomized, double-blind conditions. Among patients with lifetime diagnostic information (n = 293), 39% were diagnosed with comorbid ODD and 61% were not. Treatment-group differences and differences between patients

Comorbid personality disorders in subjects with panic disorder: do personality disorders increase clinical severity?

Personality disorders are common in subjects with panic disorder. Personality disorders have been shown to affect the course of panic disorder. The purpose of this study was to examine which personality disorders affect clinical severity in subjects with panic disorder. This study included 122 adults (71 women, 41 men) who met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition ( DSM-IV ) criteria for panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia). Clinical assessment was conducted by using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders, the Structured Clinical I

The effectiveness of anxiety treatment on alcohol-dependent patients with a comorbid phobic disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence has emerged which indicates that the post-treatment relapse rate for alcohol-dependent patients with a comorbid anxiety disorder is higher than for alcohol-dependent patients without a comorbid anxiety disorder. The question raised by this evidence is whether the relapse rate in these dually diagnosed patients could be reduced if they were given additional treatment for the comorbid anxiety disorder. We attempted to answer this question by conducting a trial among patients with a double diagnosis of alcohol dependence and agoraphobia or social phobia. METHOD: We conducted

Assessing the utility of atypical antipsychotic medication in adults with mild mental retardation and comorbid psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Research on psychiatric outcomes among individuals dually diagnosed with mild mental retardation and co-occurring mental illness who are treated with antipsychotic medication is markedly limited due to difficulties encountered in (1) making valid and reliable psychiatric diagnoses and (2) accurately rating and following psychiatric symptom change over time in this specialty population. METHOD: To address these issues, DSM-IV psychiatric diagnoses were made by an experienced dual-diagnosis clinician, and the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Global Assessment of Functioning

Risk factors and comorbidities in primary biliary cirrhosis: a controlled interview-based study of 1032 patients.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is an autoimmune disease of unknown etiology, often associated with other autoimmune conditions. Controlled studies have so far provided conflicting data on risk factors and comorbidity rates in PBC. We enrolled patients with PBC (n = 1032) from 23 tertiary referral centers for liver diseases in the United States and random-digit-dialed controls (n = 1041) matched for sex, age, race, and geographical location. Patients and controls were administered a modified version of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES III) questionnaire by trained

The impact of comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder on short-term clinical outcome in hospitalized patients with depression.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often comorbid with other psychiatric disorders but often goes unrecognized. The effects of PTSD comorbidity are unclear, especially in patients with severe mental illness. The authors assessed short-term clinical outcome in severely depressed psychiatric inpatients with and without comorbid PTSD. METHOD: From patients hospitalized between 1995 and 2000, all patients with depression and comorbid PTSD (N=587) were selected and matched with depressed patients without PTSD (N=587). Clinical outcome was assessed with a semistructured, physician-a

An exploration of comorbid depression among female victims of intimate partner violence with posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Factors contributing to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comorbid major depression (MDD) were investigated among female victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). RESULTS: High levels of PTSD (75% of the sample) and MDD (54% of the sample) were observed. Individuals with both PTSD and MDD reported significantly greater levels of PTSD and depression symptoms than individuals with either PTSD alone or without major psychopathology. Individuals with comorbid PTSD and MDD had more maladaptive depressogenic cognitive styles than individuals without PTSD. The three

Psychiatric disorders in women with bulimia nervosa and their first-degree relatives: effects of comorbid substance dependence.

OBJECTIVE: Women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and comorbid substance dependence often display impulsive behaviors. We assessed Axis I and II psychiatric diagnoses in their first-degree relatives in order to understand the etiological factors that may contribute to this subtype of BN. METHOD: We used contemporary family-epidemiological methodology to compare the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders among 47 women with BN and 44 non-eating-disordered community control women, and their first-degree relatives (177 and 190, respectively). BN probands were stratified by the presence (n = 20) o

Depression comorbid with anxiety: results from the WHO study on psychological disorders in primary health care.

The World Health Organization collaborative study on "Psychological Problems in General Health Care" investigated the form, frequency, course and outcome of common psychological problems in primary care settings at 15 international sites. The research employed a two-stage case-finding procedure. GHQ-12 was administered to 25916 adults who consulted health-care services. The second-stage assessment (n = 5438) consisted of the Composite international Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), the Social Disability Schedule, and questionnaires. Possible cases or borderline cases of mental disorder, and a sampl

Phenomenology and severity of major depression and comorbid lifetime anxiety disorders in primary medical care practice.

The psychiatric history and presenting clinical characteristics of 276 depressed primary care patients with and without a lifetime comorbid anxiety disorder were studied in a randomized control trial of treatments for major depression. Our findings indicate that distinctive patterns of depressive symptoms and severity, functional impairment, comorbidity of other DSM-III-R Axis I and Axis II disorders, and treatment participation are associated with lifetime histories of panic and generalized anxiety disorder. The most consistent differences are evident between patients with major depression al

Effects of pimozide on cognition in children with Tourette syndrome: interaction with comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Pimozide, a dopamine receptor antagonist, dopamine uptake inhibitor and L-type calcium channel blocker, is used in children suffering from Tourette syndrome (TS), but its effect on frequently comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is unknown. We have characterized the cognitive effects of pimozide and haloperidol in TS in relation to comorbid ADHD. Sixty-six consecutive outpatients with TS (DSM-III-R), ages 7-16, were randomly assigned to pimozide, haloperidol or medication-free clinical treatment and evaluated cognitively after 6 weeks. Nutritional strategies to manage postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and its comorbidities: A narrative review.

BackgroundPostural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a heterogeneous disorder of the autonomic nervous system characterized by orthostatic intolerance and involvement of multiple organ systems. It commonly coexists with conditions such as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), and a spectrum of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. These overlapping conditions frequently manifest with shared GI symptoms such as nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, early satiety, and altered bowel habits that can substantially compromise nutritional status and quality
