Food restriction combined with activity wheel access produces activity anorexia: a combination of excessive running, reduced food intake and rapid weight loss. Temporal distributions of running in activity anorexia were examined in a reversal design with one of 2 x 2 x 2 factorial combinations (pelleted-vs-powdered food x deprivation x wheel access) as the treatment condition. We report a case of atrichia with papular lesions in a 4-year-old girl. The scalp was completely hairless since birth, except for dark, shiny, coarse hair on the frontoparietal region. The vitamin A intake of 370 mothers and 183 children 3-27 mo of age in rural Bangladesh was ascertained monthly from January to July in 1986. A promising screening test for neurotoxicity has been developed using a computer tracking system and a species of nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. The animals are viewed in dark-field illumination by a video camera interfaced directly to a microcomputer. Normal control subjects were examined on three separate occasions with light of sufficient intensity to suppress nocturnal plasma melatonin concentrations.
