Early cancer detection using deep learning and medical imaging: A survey.

Cancer, characterized by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells that harm body tissues, necessitates early detection for effective treatment. Medical imaging is crucial for identifying various cancers, yet its manual interpretation by radiologists is often subjective, labour-intensive, and time-consuming. Consequently, there is a critical need for an automated decision-making process to enhance cancer detection and diagnosis. Previously, a lot of work was done on surveys of different cancer detection methods, and most of them were focused on specific cancers and limited techniques. This s

Bone-patellar tendon-bone, hamstring, and quadriceps tendon autografts for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in skeletally immature patients: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Historically, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures in the paediatric age group were managed conservatively with bracing, casting, activity modification, and physical therapy. However, most of these patients had to reduce their sports activities, and secondary damages to the affected knee were prevalent. SOURCE OF DATA: Published scientific literature in Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: ACL reconstruction in children with open physes patients is debated. Any damage to the physes around the knee could lead to growth abnormalit

Current and emerging treatment modalities for fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO), acquired or hereditary, is a diverse pathological condition defined by the production of extraskeletal bone in muscles, soft tissues, and connective tissues. Acquired HO is relatively prevalent and develops mostly in response to trauma, although its etiology is unknown. Genetic forms provide insight into the pathobiological mechanisms of this disorder. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare hereditary form of HO that can have a significant impact on affected individuals. FOP steadily weakens affected subjects and increases their risk

The role of histone deacetylases in inflammatory respiratory diseases: an update.

INTRODUCTION: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) catalyze the removal of acetyl groups from lysine residues of histones and other proteins, generally leading to a closed chromosomal configuration and transcriptional repression. Different HDACs have distinct substrate specificities and functions in different biological processes. Accumulating evidence indicates that HDACs play a key role in the pathogenesis of multiple respiratory diseases. AREAS COVERED: After an extensive search of the PubMed database, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov, covering the period from 1992 to 2024, this review summar

Alpine salamanders at risk? The current status of an emerging fungal pathogen.

Amphibians globally suffer from emerging infectious diseases like chytridiomycosis caused by the continuously spreading chytrid fungi. One is Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) and its disease ‒ the 'salamander plague' ‒ which is lethal to several caudate taxa. Recently introduced into Western Europe, long distance dispersal of Bsal, likely through human mediation, has been reported. Herein we study if Alpine salamanders (Salamandra atra and S. lanzai) are yet affected by the salamander plague in the wild. Members of the genus Salamandra are highly susceptible to Bsal leading to the leth

The future of hepatology.

The field of hepatology has made impressive progress over its ~75 years of existence. Advances in understanding liver function and its dysregulation in disease, genetic determinants of disease, antiviral therapy, and transplantation have transformed the lives of patients. However, there are still significant challenges that require ongoing creativity and discipline, particularly with the emergence of fatty liver diseases, as well as managing autoimmune disease, cancer, and liver disease in children. Diagnostic advances are urgently needed to accelerate risk stratification and efficient testing

Machine learning to support citizen science in urban environmental management.

Machine learning (ML) and citizen science (CS) are increasingly prevalent and rapidly evolving approaches to studying and managing environmental challenges. Municipal and other governance actors can benefit from technology advances in ML and public engagement benefits of CS but must also address validity and other quality assurance concerns in their application to particular management contexts. In this article, we take up the pervasive challenge of urban litter to demonstrate how ML can support CS by providing quality assurance in the regulatory context of California's stormwater program. We
