The selection of embryos is a key for the success of in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, automatic quality assessment on human IVF embryos with optical microscope images is still challenging. In this study, we developed a clinical consensus-compliant deep learning approach, named Esava (Embryo Segmentation and Viability Assessment), to quantitatively evaluate the development of IVF embryos using optical microscope images. In total 551 optical microscope images of human IVF embryos of day-2 to day-3 were collected, preprocessed, and annotated. Using the Faster R-CNN model as baseline, our Es

Severe COVID-19 can lead to extensive lung disease causing lung architectural distortion. In this study we employed machine learning and statistical atlas-based approaches to explore possible changes in lung shape among COVID-19 patients and evaluated whether the extent of these changes was associated with COVID-19 severity. On a large multi-institutional dataset (N = 3443), three different populations were defined; a) healthy (no COVID-19), b) mild COVID-19 (no ventilator required), c) severe COVID-19 (ventilator required), and the presence of lung shape differences between them were explored

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The pathophysiology of spontaneous vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (SVADA) is poorly understood. Our goal is to investigate the hemodynamic factors contributing to their formation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and deep learning algorithms.
METHODS: We have developed software that can use patient imagery as input to recreate the vertebrobasilar arterial system, both with and without SVADA, which we used in a series of three patients. To obtain the kinematic blood flow data before and after the aneurysm forms, we utilized numerical methods to solve th

OBJECTIVE: Deep learning (DL)-enabled magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstructions can enable shortening of breath-hold examinations and improve image quality by reducing motion artifacts. Prospective studies with DL reconstructions of accelerated MRI of the upper abdomen in the context of pancreatic pathologies are lacking. In a clinical setting, the purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of a novel DL-based reconstruction algorithm in T1-weighted volumetric interpolated breath-hold examinations with partial Fourier sampling and Dixon fat suppression (hereafter, VIBE-Dixo

OBJECTIVE: Surgical outcome prediction is challenging but necessary for postoperative management. Current machine learning models utilize pre- and post-op data, excluding intraoperative information in surgical notes. Current models also usually predict binary outcomes even when surgeries have multiple outcomes that require different postoperative management. This study addresses these gaps by incorporating intraoperative information into multimodal models for multiclass glaucoma surgery outcome prediction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed and evaluated multimodal deep learning models for m

Substance use disorders affect 17.3% of Americans. Digital health solutions that use machine learning to detect substance use from wearable biosignal data can eventually pave the way for real-time digital interventions. However, difficulties in addressing severe between-subject data heterogeneity have hampered the adaptation of machine learning approaches for substance use detection, necessitating more robust technological solutions. We tested the utility of personalized machine learning using participant-specific convolutional neural networks (CNNs) enhanced with self-supervised learning (SSL

Thermal energy harvesting has seen a rise in popularity in recent years due to its potential to generate renewable energy from the sun. One of the key components of this process is the solar absorber, which is responsible for converting solar radiation into thermal energy. In this paper, a smart performance optimization of energy efficient solar absorber for thermal energy harvesting is proposed for modern industrial environments using solar deep learning model. In this model, data is collected from multiple sensors over time that measure various environmental factors such as temperature, humi

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic bone marrow lesions (BML) are frequently identified on knee MRI scans in patients following an acute full-thickness, complete ACL tear. BMLs coincide with regions of elevated localized bone loss, and studies suggest these may act as a precursor to the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis. This study addresses the labour-intensive manual assessment of BMLs by using a 3D U-Net for automated identification and segmentation from MRI scans.
METHODS: A multi-task learning approach was used to segment both bone and BML from T2 fat-suppressed (FS) fast spin echo (FSE)

As emerging pollutants, antidepressants (AD) must be urgently investigated for risk identification and assessment. This study constructed a comprehensive-effect risk-priority screening system (ADRank) for ADs by characterizing AD functionality, occurrence, persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity based on the integrated assignment method. A classification model for ADs was constructed using an improved mixup-transformer deep learning method, and its classification accuracy was compared with those of other models. The accuracy of the proposed model improved by up to 23.25 % compared with the r

Lung cancer is one of the most deadly diseases in the world. Lung cancer detection can save the patient's life. Despite being the best imaging tool in the medical sector, clinicians find it challenging to interpret and detect cancer from Computed Tomography (CT) scan data. One of the most effective ways for the diagnosis of certain malignancies like lung tumours is Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. So many diagnosis models have been implemented nowadays to diagnose various diseases. Early lung cancer identification is very important for predicting the severity level of lung cancer in

BACKGROUND: Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) is a standard method for diagnosing and treating small bowel disease. However, DBE may yield false-negative results due to oversight or inexperience. We aim to develop a computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) system for the automatic detection and classification of small bowel abnormalities in DBE.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 5201 images were collected from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University to construct a detection model for localizing lesions during DBE, and 3021 images were collected to construct a classification model for classifying lesions into

BACKGROUND: Clinical diagnoses are typically made by following a series of steps recommended by guidelines that are authored by colleges of experts. Accordingly, guidelines play a crucial role in rationalizing clinical decisions. However, they suffer from limitations, as they are designed to cover the majority of the population and often fail to account for patients with uncommon conditions. Moreover, their updates are long and expensive, making them unsuitable for emerging diseases and new medical practices.
METHODS: Inspired by guidelines, we formulate the task of diagnosis as a sequential

BACKGROUND: The production of inflammatory factors in periodontium is increased by LPS, particularly from P. gingivalis, and the damage to periodontal tissues is exacerbated. Exosomes from periodontal ligament stem cells change regeneration and repair brought on by bacterial LPS. MiRNAs are carried by exosomes to recipient cells to affect epigenetic functions. Thus, this study aims to utilize deep learning algorithms to uncover novel micro-RNA biomarkers in bacterial LPS-exposed PDLSC stem cells to understand the activation pathway.
