Repetitive negative thinking as a predictor of depression and anxiety: A longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive Negative Thinking (RNT) is assumed to be a transdiagnostic proximal risk factor in depression and anxiety. We examined the prospective relations of disorder-dependent as well as disorder-independent measures of RNT with depression and anxiety outcomes. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, 1972 adults completed a 3-year follow-up period (attrition = 12.6%). DSM-IV diagnoses were assessed with the CIDI, symptom severity with the IDS and BAI, and RNT with measures for perseverative thinking (PTQ), rumination (LEIDS-R) and worry (PWQ). RESULTS: The common dimension of o

Risk of psychiatric disorders following trigeminal neuralgia: a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: TN is one of the most common causes of facial pain. A higher prevalence of psychiatric co-morbidities, especially depressive disorder, has been proven in patients with TN; however, a clear temporal-causal relationship between TN and specific psychiatric disorders has not been well established. We performed a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study to explore the relationship between TN and the subsequent development of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, and sleep disorder. METHODS: We identified s

Rumination, anxiety, depressive symptoms and subsequent depression in adolescents at risk for psychopathology: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A ruminative style of responding to low mood is associated with subsequent high depressive symptoms and depressive disorder in children, adolescents and adults. Scores on self-report rumination scales correlate strongly with scores on anxiety and depression symptom scales. This may confound any associations between rumination and subsequent depression. METHODS: Our sample comprised 658 healthy adolescents at elevated risk for psychopathology. This study applied ordinal item (non-linear) factor analysis to pooled items from three self-report questionnaires to explore whether there

Neuroanatomical and Functional Correlates in Depressive Spectrum: A Narrative Review.

Depressive spectrum disorders are considered among the most common in the general population. Major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder (or dysthymia) are the most recognized, but other depressive disorders exist with varying or no specificity. The main difference between major depressive disorder and dysthymia lies in the duration and intensity of symptoms. Improving our understanding of its etiology and pathogenesis must be a priority for health and safety. Given the complexity of the evidence in the literature, it was deemed useful to provide a comprehensive summary of th

The removal of the bereavement exclusion in the DSM-5: exploring the evidence.

Since 1980, the DSM-III and its various iterations through the DSM-IV-TR have systematically excluded individuals from the diagnosis of major depressive disorder if symptoms began within months after the death of a loved one (2 months in DSM-IV), unless the depressive syndrome was 'severely' impairing and/or accompanied by specific features. This criterion became known as the 'bereavement exclusion'. No other adverse life events were noted to negate the diagnosis of major depressive disorder if all other symptomatic, duration, severity and distress/impairment criteria were met. However, studie

The economic and humanistic burden of bipolar disorder in adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is associated with functional impairment and diminished health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The purpose of this study was to estimate the annual per patient direct healthcare costs, indirect costs, and HRQoL of patients with bipolar disorder by depressive symptom severity and overall compared to the general population in the US. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used self-reported data from the 2020 US National Health and Wellness Survey. Adult respondents who reported bipolar disorder symptoms in the past 12 months and/or a diagnosis of bipolar disorder wer

[Evaluation of the depressive symptomatology in the elderly].

Depressive symptoms are frequent in old age. They are associated with several types of mental disorders : major depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymia, organic mood disorder, mixed anxious and depressive disorder. Various types of assessment tools can help to evaluate depressive symptomatology in the elderly: self administered questionnaires, observer ratings, standardised interviews. All are helpful in the clinical approach of depressive states. Self-administered questionnaires are the best tools for a systematic brief screening for depression, while observer ratings will be used for a quant

Bipolar disorder, not so rare diagnosis: subtypes of different degrees of severity, diagnosis, therapy.

Bipolar disorder is manifesting as a mood disorder, typically showing episodes of mania, alternating with depressive episodes. The subtypes are including bipolar I disorder (one or several manic episodes) and bipolar II disorder (hypomanic episodes and one or several major depressive episodes). Nevertheless, sub-threshold diagnosis criteria may include another 5.1, up to 6.4% of the population as having a bipolar spectrum disorder diagnosis. Anyone who received the diagnosis is not considered cured afterwards (just in remission). Diagnosis is considering the symptoms of mania, hypomania and de

Improving Outpatient Psychotherapy for Adults With Major Depressive and Anxiety Disorders Using Web-Based High-Frequency Monitoring and Feedback in Autosystemic Hypnotherapy: Protocol for a Two-Arm ABAB Crossed-Therapist Randomized Clinical Implementation Trial.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, routine outcome monitoring has been increasingly complemented by routine process monitoring in psychotherapy and other health care settings. Various approaches to therapy feedback exist, differing in assessment frequency, integration into the therapeutic process, and degree of personalization. In this study, we will use a procedure of high-frequency assessment through daily self-ratings, a standard process questionnaire, alongside a personalized questionnaire derived from case formulation, and frequent feedback interviews using visual diagrams to mirror the ongoing

Homicide and bipolar I disorder: a 22-year study.

BACKGROUND: Non-serious offenses in manic phase have been mainly studied in patients with bipolar disorder. However, some authors reported that depressive phase is related with the violent and homicidal manifestations of bipolar disorder. AIMS: We investigated the characteristics of homicide by the polarity of mood episode in patients with bipolar I disorder. METHODS: Among the offenders who were sentenced to undergo treatment at the National Institute of Forensic Psychiatry from October 1987 to January 2008, a total 219 offenders whose final diagnoses were bipolar I disorder based on DSM-II

What do childhood attention deficit/hyperactivity symptoms in depressed adults tell us about the bipolar spectrum?

BACKGROUND: This study aims to establish if adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and childhood Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms would be more frequently within the bipolar spectrum than depressed patients without childhood ADHD. METHODS: This study was carried out in outpatients recruited by psychiatrists in private practice, with 3963 participants being included in the final sample. Clinicians filled out questionnaires about current depressive symptoms in their patients, lifetime bipolar symptoms, global assessment of functioning and parental history of

[Post-traumatic stress, post-traumatic depression and major depressive episode: literature].

Although they are likely to add their effects, physical and psychic traumata (or traumas) can provoke in different ways the appearance of depressive symptoms sometimes common. Post-traumatic depression, reactional depression, major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder represent different clinical and nosographic disorders in despite of their occasionally common symptomatic core. Historically, it is interesting to note during the XXth century the true semantic change of the terms of trauma from the somatic field to the psychic sphere. Physical traumatism is often represented b

Prior reproductive and non-reproductive depression, and depressive symptoms in menopausal transition.

OBJECTIVE: The menopausal transition is associated with an increased risk of depression. Prior depression is a well-established risk factor, but studies do not distinguish between prior reproductive and non-reproductive depression. We aimed to examine whether prior reproductive (i.e., premenstrual mood disorder and perinatal depression) and non-reproductive (i.e., not related to hormonal transitions) depression were differentially associated with depressive symptoms during the menopausal transition. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from menopause outpatient clinics, including a multi

Diagnostic features, prevalence, and impact of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder shares depressive symptoms with unipolar major depressive disorder but is defined by episodes of mania or hypomania. Bipolar disorder in its broadest sense has a community lifetime prevalence of 4% and is a severely impairing illness that impacts several aspects of patients' lives. Race, ethnicity, and gender have no effect on prevalence rates, but women are more likely to experience rapid cycling, mixed states, depressive episodes, and bipolar II disorder than men. Patients with bipolar disorder have high rates of disability and higher rates of mortality than individuals with
