We report the restoration of the 430-kD dystrophin in mdx, the mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, by expression of a single-copy recombinant dystrophin transgene. Muscle-specific expression was achieved using a creatine kinase promoter influenced by two enhancers. Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy (DMD and BMD) are X-linked recessive diseases caused by defective expression of dystrophin. The mdx mouse, an animal model for DMD, has a mutation that eliminates expression of the 427K muscle and brain isoforms of dystrophin. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a genuine alternative to open cholecystectomy. Acute cholecystitis, chronic cholecystitis with adhesions and gallbladder cancer are absolute, and bile duct stones in rare situations and previous surgery relative contraindications. A study by a survey about sexuality in adolescents was performed in 218, subjects aged 14-19 years with the aim of knowing the level of sexual intercourse practice, the degree of sexual information and the use of contraceptive methods and history of pregnancy by age and sex. A 35-year-old woman had a 13-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with recurrent flares since 1972 responding to corticosteroid therapy. We studied 42 orbits of 23 patients with Graves' disease who had proptosis secondary to the orbitopathy of their disease and had undergone decompressive operations. The patients were evaluated preoperatively and underwent computed tomography. They were also examined frequently during the first postoperative year and the computed tomography was repeated at 6 months. Three variables correlated well with the reduction in proptosis: the percentage of increase in orbital volume after surgery, the absolute increase in orbital volume, and the degree of orbital "stiffness" as measured preoperatively.

Two cases of paralysis of the diaphragm occurring after puncture of the internal jugular vein are reported. We have studied two unrelated genetic males with a novel constellation of genital, cardiac, and pulmonary malformations. A method of local polarization-excitation was used to study changes in motor nerve terminal excitability produced by n-alkanols and volatile anaesthetics in mouse diaphragm preparations. Results with the use of a diaphragmatic graft in the surgical relief of achalasia are reported for 44 patients. The operative technique involves construction of a pedicle flap of diaphragm the size of the muscular defect on the lower segment of the esophagus and suture of the transplanted diaphragmatic pedicle to the site of the esophageal muscular defect. Laboratory ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were each inoculated with 500 larvae of a strain of Trichinella spiralis that had been passaged in mice for many generations. In a developing country with inadequate clinical facilities a conservative method of management of a major clinical problem is often the only rational approach. This policy was adopted in the management of 145 patients with chest trauma in a teaching hospital in Nigeria.
