Clinical studies of intestinal folate conjugases.

Clinical differences between the two human intestinal mucosal folate conjugases were assessed by measurement of their activities in normal individuals and in patients with chronic diarrhea of differing causes. Intracellular folate conjugase (ICFC) was 15-fold more active than brush border folate conjugase (BBFC) in jejunal mucosa from seven obese patients undergoing elective gastric bypass surgery. The activity of ICFC was similar among normal volunteers and patients with diarrhea of unknown origin (DUO), gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and the short bowel

The histopathologic spectrum of acute self-limited colitis (acute infectious-type colitis).

Acute self-limited colitis (ASLC) is a self-limiting diarrheal illness which is often caused by known infectious agents (Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Shigella), but many cases are of unknown etiology. This report describes the histopathologic features of acute self-limited colitis as related to its natural history. The extent of inflammation and regeneration varies with the duration of the disease. In the peak activity stage (within 0-4 days of onset of bloody diarrhea) there is mucosal edema, cryptitis, crypt ulcers, and abscesses. At the time of resolution (within 6-9 days of onset of bloo

Arterial blood gas and acid-base values in dogs with various diseases and signs of disease.

Results of arterial blood gas and acid-base analysis on initial samples prior to therapy were reviewed for 220 dogs admitted to the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Acidemia or alkalemia was detected in 61 of 220 dogs (28%). The most common acid-base abnormality was metabolic acidosis (79 of 220 dogs--36%). Primary metabolic acidosis was the acid-base category associated most frequently with the combination of vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration, and the combination of polydipsia and polyuria, whereas normal mean arterial PCO2 and [HCO3-] values and primary metabolic acidosis

Copper metabolism and requirements in total parenteral nutrition.

Copper metabolism and requirements in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition were studied in 28 patients with gastrointestinal diseases. During each of the 3 wk of the study period, each of 24 patients received in their total parenteral nutrition solutions, a daily dose of copper amounting to 0.25 mg, 1.05 mg, or 1.85 mg, in a random order. The other 4 patients received a fixed daily dose of 1 mg throughout the 3 wk. Increased losses of copper through the gastrointestinal tract occurred in patients with diarrhea or high-output stomas or fistulas. Patients with abnormalities of liver exc

Managing immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated gastritis: Insights and strategies.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are widely used due to their effectiveness in treating various tumors. Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are defined as adverse effects resulting from ICI treatment. Gastrointestinal irAEs are a common type of irAEs characterized by intestinal side effects, such as diarrhea and colitis, which may lead to the discontinuation of ICIs.

Sailing the ship of life: scurvy and autoimmunity . .

Celiac disease (CD) is a multisystem disorder known to manifest in a multitude of ways to include diarrhea, anemia, and nutritional deficiencies. The malabsorptive state can present as certain classical conditions such as autoimmune gastritis and osteopenia/osteoporosis but scurvy is less recognized within the literature. In this case, we present a unique presentation of scurvy as a result of an undiagnosed CD.

Mesenteric vascular occlusion and varices complicating midgut malrotation.

Long-standing complete obstruction of the superior mesenteric artery and vein and recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding from varices within the bowel were encountered in a child as a complication of midgut malrotation and volvulus. This condition is unusual, but should be considered in cases of gastrointestinal bleeding, or when small bowel biopsy is contemplated for the evaluation of diarrhea or malabsorption in cases of malrotation.

Fecal microbiota transplantation for treatment of recurrent C. difficile infection: An updated randomized controlled trial meta-analysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVES: Although systematic evaluation has confirmed the efficacy of fresh fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for treatment of recurrent and/or refractory and/or relapse C. difficile infection (RCDI), it lacks the support of well-designed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and the latest guidelines do not optimize the management of FMT. In this paper, we focus on an in-depth study of fresh FMT and fecal infusion times to guide clinical practice. METHODS: We reviewed studies in PubMed, Medline, Embase, the Cochrane library and Cochrane Central written in English. The retrieval period

Epidemiology of Clostridium difficile-associated disease (CDAD): a shift from hospital-acquired infection to long-term care facility-based infection.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiological studies on Clostridium-difficile-Associated Diarrhea (CDAD) have focused on hospitalized patients with nosocomial transmission. However, increasing numbers of patients with CDAD are being admitted to acute-care hospitals from long-term care facilities (LTCFs) and the local community. The purpose of our study was to study the changing epidemiological trends of CDAD patients admitted to an acute-care hospital and examine factors contributing to this shift in epidemiology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This IRB-approved retrospective study included 400 randomly sele

Overcoming barriers in evaluating outbreaks of diarrheal disease in resource poor settings: assessment of recurrent outbreaks in Chobe District, Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Diarrheal illness remains a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, with the majority of deaths occurring in children <5 years of age. Lack of resources often prohibits the evaluation of outbreak characteristics and limits progress in managing this important disease syndrome, particularly in Africa. Relying only on existing medical staff and hospital resources, we assess the use of a questionnaire survey tool to identify baseline outbreak characteristics during recurrent diarrheal outbreaks in Chobe, Botswana. METHODS: Using historical surveillance data (2006-2009), the t

Oral immunization with cholera toxin provides protection against Campylobacter jejuni in an adult mouse intestinal colonization model.

UNLABELLED: Immunity to Campylobacter jejuni, a major diarrheal pathogen, is largely Penner serotype specific. For broad protection, a vaccine should be based on a common antigen(s) present in all strains. In our previous study (M. J. Albert, S. Haridas, D. Steer, G. S. Dhaunsi, A. I. Smith, and B. Adler, Infect. Immun. 75:3070-3073, 2007), we demonstrated that antibody to cholera toxin (CT) cross-reacted with the major outer membrane proteins (MOMPs) of all Campylobacter jejuni strains tested. In the current study, we investigated whether immunization with CT protects against intestinal colon

Strongyloides hyperinfection: a treatment dilemma.

Strongyloides stercoralis infection is a common cause of abdominal pain and diarrhea worldwide. Usually a chronic and limited disease, it can present a therapeutic dilemma when infection is overwhelming, such as what might occur in an immunosuppressed patient. Here we present a case of strongyloides hyperinfection treated successfully with a veterinary formulation of parenteral ivermectin.

[Infusion therapy in gastrointestinal diseases].

In terms of a short review indications and applications of infusion therapy in gastroenterology (concerning vomiting, fistulas, diarrhea, ileus and peritonitis) are discussed. It is pointed out that in cases of water and electrolyte deficiency a rigid regimen is not reasonable. If possible a balance should be obtained. Parenteral nutrition is applied in obstructions of the upper gastrointestinal tract and in maldigestion and malabsorption.

Low BVDV antigen prevalence in dairy cattle in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, UAE: a cross-sectional study with regional comparison.

Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) is an economically important cattle pathogen, yet epidemiological data from commercial dairy herds in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are lacking. This cross-sectional study estimated animal- and herd-level BVDV antigen prevalence in commercial dairy herds in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, UAE, and compared the findings with published regional and global prevalence estimates. A total of 681 adult female Holstein-Friesian cattle from nine dairy farms were sampled using a stratified systematic approach and tested for BVDV antigen by antigen-capture ELISA. Published

Outbreak of BVDV-1b associated with persistent infection, reproductive losses, and congenital malformations in beef cattle in Southern Brazil.

An outbreak of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in a herd of 218 beef cattle resulted in 15 late-term abortions and the birth of two weak calves. Neonate 1, at 28 days of age, exhibited ataxia and paresis, while Neonate 2, at one day of age, was underdeveloped. Neonate 1 presented with cerebellar hypoplasia, hydrocephalus, and porencephalic cysts. Histological examination revealed foliar dysgenesis and ectopic Purkinje neurons. Neonate 2, weighing 7 kg at birth, showed no histologic lesions. A single fetus at six months was necropsied and showed no gross lesions. However, histopathology reve

PI3K/AKT mediated De novo fatty acid synthesis regulates RIG-1/MDA-5-dependent type I IFN responses in BVDV-infected CD8+T cells.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) has caused massive economic losses in the cattle business worldwide. Fatty acid synthase (FASN), a key enzyme of the fatty acid synthesis (FAS) pathway, has been shown to support virus replication. To investigate the role of fatty acids (FAs) in BVDV infection, we infected CD8+T lymphocytes obtained from healthy cattle with BVDV in vitro. During early cytopathic (CP) and noncytopathic (NCP) BVDV infection in CD8+ T cells, there is an increase in de novo lipid biosynthesis, resulting in elevated levels of free fatty acids (FFAs) and triglycerides (TG).
