Immunomodulatory Roles of Probiotics: From Intestinal Barrier Regulation to Clinical Applications.

The mammalian gut is a highly dynamic physiological ecosystem that harbors an enormous number of commensal bacteria that play an essential role in the development of various cells of the immune system. The gut bacteria, both resident and diet-derived, share a habitat with immune cells located within the lamina propria layer of the intestinal villi. The intestinal epithelial cells do not come into direct contact with the gut microbiota, but microbial metabolites play a significant role in their maturation and appropriate function. According to the World Health Organization, probiotics are "live

Synthesis of Microbial-Derived Octadecanoids.

Gut bacteria can convert dietary fatty acids into oxygenated metabolites called oxylipins, which can exert potent lipid mediator functions. The oxylipins derived from C-18 fatty acids are termed octadecanoids and associate with multiple disorders including allergy and metabolic dysregulation. This study presents the synthesis of 17 octadecanoids possessing a hydroxy group (n = 9) or a ketone (n = 8) on the 10- or 13-positions. The products of these two series were prepared for the linoleic acid (LA), α-linolenic acid (ALA) and γ-linolenic acid (GLA) pathways. The synthetic strategies provided
