PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is intended to give an overview of the epidemiology of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with impaired lung function with an emphasis on patients with COPD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Despite shared risk factors, lung disease is an emerging independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and cardio-vascular disease (CVD) outcomes. Both CVD and chronic lung disease contribute significantly to overall mortality. Especially patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at high risk for CVD-related mortality. In patients with chronic lung

Osteoporosis is a generalized disease of bone that increases the fracture risk. Among the multiple factors involved in osteoporosis, some, but not all, are related to bone mass. Although bone mineral density (BMD) measurement is specific for detecting high-risk individuals, it misses a notable proportion of individuals who have clinical or epidemiological risk factors for osteoporotic fractures. Therefore, composite scores that rely both on BMD and on validated clinical risk factors have been developed. The Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) was designed to predict the 10-year probabilities

Human neurocysticercosis (NC) is a parasitic disease caused by TAENIA SOLIUM when its larvae lodge in the central nervous system. NC prevalence estimates are obscured by the variable and often asymptomatic clinical picture. While infection depends on exposure, severity is possibly related with various host factors (immunity, genes and gender). This epidemiological study of cranial CT scans in an endemic rural community found that 9.1% of apparently healthy subjects had calcified lesions and were completely asymptomatic. Silent NC cases did not correlate with the exposure factors tested but sho

New epidemiological data give evidence for an unknown etiological agent of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Experimental support is provided by research on cultivated KS cells. These results contradict a direct involvement of HIV-1 in the pathogenesis of KS. Research on cultivated KS cells confirmed the hypothesis that KS spindle cells originate from endothelial cells and gave new insight into the pathogenesis of tumor cell growth. KS spindle cells secrete an autocrine acting growth promoting activity. Nevertheless, they seem to depend on several growth factors like PDGF and IL-6 provided by surrounding

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy has shifted the therapeutic landscape of hematological malignancies in the last decade, and bispecific antibodies (BsAb) are an emerging treatment for this patient population. Immunosuppression associated with these therapies can lead to a variety of infectious complications. In this narrative review, we explore the epidemiology, risk factors and prevention of bacterial, viral and fungal infections after CAR T cell and BsAb therapy.

Onychomycosis is a fungal nail infection caused by dermatophytes, nondermatophytes, and yeast, and is the most common nail disorder seen in clinical practice. It is an important problem because it may cause local pain, paresthesias, difficulties performing activities of daily life, and impair social interactions. In this continuing medical education series we review the epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical presentation of onychomycosis and demonstrate current and emerging diagnostic strategies.

An aspiration of a dental crown during a dental extraction requires appropriate and timely diagnosis and management. While foreign body aspiration in dental procedures is relatively uncommon, it constitutes a true medical emergency and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We report a case of mortality from a foreign body aspiration and discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, signs and symptoms, management, and prevention of foreign body ingestion and aspiration events.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma is rapidly increasing in the developed world and continues to be a challenge in the clinic. Although extensive epidemiologic evidence points to solar UV as the major risk factor for melanoma, there is a significant gap in our knowledge about how this most ubiquitous environmental carcinogen interacts with the largest organ of the mammalian body (skin) at the microenvironmental and molecular level. We review some recent advances that have started to close this gap.

A 5-year-old boy with cat scratch disease presented with fever of unknown origin and osteomyelitis of the thoracic spine and epidural abscess. He did not have localizing signs or symptoms. Computed tomography of the abdomen, which was initially negative, showed hepatosplenic disease. Cat scratch disease has variable systemic presentations and should be included in the differential diagnosis of fever of unknown origin if an epidemiologic risk factor is present.

Gastric cancer (GC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with chronic inflammation playing a central role in its pathogenesis. While established risk factors such as Helicobacter pylori (Hp), diet, and lifestyle are well recognized, growing epidemiological evidence links airborne particulate matter (PM) exposure with increased GC incidence and mortality. However, the biological mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood. This review integrates epidemiological evidence associating elevated PM exposure with GC risk and summarizes current mechanistic

INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common autoimmune disorder characterized by nonscarring hair loss on the scalp and/or body, affecting individuals of all genders, ages, and races. AA can occur alongside various autoimmune, atopic, and psychiatric conditions, affecting patients' quality of life. Although AA is a relatively common condition, recent epidemiological data regarding this condition in Taiwan are lacking.
METHODS: This systematic literature review aimed to assess the epidemiology, risk factors, and comorbidities associated with AA in Taiwan by analyzing articles published from

Controlling populations of Ixodes ticks has emerged as a core strategy for reducing human exposure to tick-borne infections. Several means of reducing the size of the tick population using chemical and biological acaricides show promise in field trials and are frequently used commercially in North America and Europe. The Tick Project (TTP) assessed whether the use of two commercially available methods of reducing the abundance of host-seeking blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) reduced encounters with ticks and reported cases of tick-borne disease in humans and their outdoor pets. BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that periodontitis (PD) is epidemiologically associated with mental health. To minimize the influence of confounding factors, we employed Mendelian randomization (MR) as the analytical approach to investigate the potential causal relationships between PD and schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD).
METHODS: 8 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), sourced from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 45,563 individuals were used as instrumental variables for PD. 131, 52 and 0 SNPs were employed from 3 GWASs of S

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is increasingly recognized as a persistent neurodevelopmental condition with long-term implications for cognitive aging and dementia risk. Epidemiological and longitudinal studies indicate that adults with ADHD have a higher incidence of non-amnestic dementia subtypes, including Lewy body disease, and may be particularly susceptible to age-related cognitive decline. Convergent mechanistic evidence implicates dopaminergic dysregulation, possible Wnt/mTOR pathway alterations, oxidative stress, and chronic neuroinflammation as shared biologica

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most prevalent congenital disorder, contributing significantly to neonate mortality. Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, the incidence and risk factors of CHD remain underexplored, particularly in regions with varied altitudes. Sichuan Province, China, with its diverse topography and altitudes, provides a unique opportunity to investigate the epidemiology of CHD across different environmental settings. This study aims to explore the incidence, subtypes, and risk factors of CHD in neonates across high, middle, and low-altitude regions of Sichuan Pr
