Diet quality and depressive symptoms in older adults, assessing the effect modification by genetic predisposition and low-grade inflammation: a target trial emulation.

Longitudinal studies have shown an association between diet quality and depression. However, reverse causality, unmeasured confounding, and selection bias remained important limitations. We aim to examine the relationship between diet quality and depression in older adults while addressing these issues and explore modification role of genetic predisposition to depression and low-grade inflammation. We emulated a target trial of dietary interventions using data from the ASPREE cohort. An ultra-processed food (UPF) index and an anti-inflammatory diet measure were extracted from a food frequency

Loneliness and depression among older adults with cancer: an exploratory analysis of psychosocial constructs.

INTRODUCTION: Loneliness is a common and clinically significant concern among older adults with cancer (OACs; age ≥70), who often experience heightened psychological distress compounded by aging-related challenges. The current study sought to identify the nature and magnitude of the relationships between loneliness and other psychosocial variables. METHODS: Data were drawn from the baseline assessment of an ongoing randomized controlled trial of psychotherapy for distressed OACs. Loneliness was assessed using the PROMIS Social Isolation measure. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Hos

Glecaprevir/Pibrentasvir for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a common condition with few effective medication treatments. Glecaprevir/Pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB), a treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, demonstrated possible evidence of effectiveness for PTSD in an epidemiological study. We sought to determine if GLE/PIB decreases the symptoms of PTSD and modulates inflammation. METHODS: An uncontrolled open trial was conducted at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction Vermont. Participants were veterans with PTSD and no HCV infection. Ten participants received Glecaprevir 10

Prenatal adipose tissue estimation using early second trimester anthropometry.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Prenatal visceral (VAT) and total (TAT) adipose tissue are associated with gestational diabetes and preeclampsia risk, yet cannot be routinely assessed in clinical or epidemiologic settings. Although anthropometric measures reflect adiposity in non-pregnant individuals, their utility in early pregnancy remains unclear. We examined associations between anthropometrics and TAT and VAT in the early second trimester and evaluated differences by prepregnancy BMI. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Among pregnant women (n = 61) in the Mother and Infant NuTrition (MINT) cohort, TAT and VAT wer

Association between acrylamide hemoglobin adduct levels and rheumatoid arthritis: A NHANES analysis.

Acrylamide is a widespread environmental and dietary contaminant, and hemoglobin adducts of acrylamide (HbAA) and its metabolite glycidamide (HbGA) serve as objective biomarkers of internal exposure. However, the association between acrylamide exposure and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been well characterized at the population level. We analyzed data from 4 cycles of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2006 and 2013-2016), including 1972 adults aged ≥20 years with complete information on RA status and acrylamide hemoglobin adduct measurements. Multivariable logist

Defining Success and Failure In Prosthetic Joint Infections: A Meta-epidemiologic Study Toward A Core Outcome Set.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) represents an important complication of total joint arthroplasty, affecting approximately 2% of patients. However, considerable heterogeneity in outcome definitions renders cross-study and clinical comparisons challenging. METHODS: We performed a meta-epidemiological study and systematic review of cohort studies and randomized controlled trial (RCTs) reporting clear definitions of PJI outcomes. Relevant data regarding outcome definitions of treatment success or failure were extracted and categorized into 7 outcome domains: clinical signs and sympto

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Anxiety and Depression Among American Indian and Alaska Native Adolescents in the United States.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adolescents experience considerable mental health disparities, yet research on the prevalence of anxiety and depression remains limited. The objectives of this study were to assess available depression and anxiety data among AI/AN adolescents in the literature and to estimate depression prevalence and mean scores. A systematic review of the Medline, Embase, and PsycINFO databases identified publications reporting on anxiety or depression in AI/AN adolescents aged 10-19. Gray literature was searched in ProQuest Dissertation and Theses to minimize public

Evaluation of preventive interventions addressing healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Infection prevention and control (IPC) measures are widely used in healthcare settings to reduce the incidence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and limit the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted to assess the combined and cumulative effects of IPC practices and AMR determinants on the epidemiological trends of HAIs. METHODS: A systematic search was performed across PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science using a combination of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and keywords related to HAI, AMR and I

Silent Inflammation: A Critical Narrative Review of the Relationship Between Periodontal Disease and Psychosis-The Role of Oxidative Stress and Iatrogenic Comorbidities.

Extensive epidemiological evidence links psychosis (PZ)-particularly schizophrenia (SCZ)-with disproportionate periodontal destruction, suggesting shared biological vulnerability. Beyond local tissue damage, periodontitis provides a clinically accessible translational paradigm for systemic redox dysregulation, where sustained inflammatory activation coincides with measurable oxidative injury and exhaustion of antioxidant (AO) defenses across cardiometabolic and neuropsychiatric domains. In this critical narrative review, we argue that the excess periodontal burden in PZ reflects a "pathologica

Cognitive and Memory Decline in Thyroid Disorders: A Biomarker Based Cross Sectional Study in Aging Adults.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves a complex interplay of several factors like oxidative stress, hypercalcemia, decreased acetylcholine, which may act independently or synergistically to drive cognitive decline. The accumulation of Aβ42 fragments derived from amyloid precursor protein is hall mark of AD. Epidemiologic studies suggest that thyroid dysfunction may increase the risk of early-onset AD. This study aims to provide the potential mechanisms linking thyroid dysfunction and AD, both common in older adults by evaluating serum memory and cognitive biomark

Charged to death: Energy drinks, smart drugs, and sudden cardiac death.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in individuals ≤35 years remains a major challenge for cardiology and forensic medicine, often affecting subjects without prior symptoms. At the same time, the consumption of energy drinks (EDs) and the medical or non-medical use of cognitive enhancers or "smart drugs" (SDs), including methylphenidate, amphetamine derivatives, and modafinil, has increased markedly among adolescents, students, and athletes. This review integrates mechanistic, clinical, epidemiological, and forensic evidence to clarify the role of EDs and SDs as arrhythmogenic triggers, identify at-ris

Beat the clock: One-hour diagnostics of emerging viral threats using fast molecular approaches.

BACKGROUND: Emerging viral infections pose significant challenges for clinical management and public health, particularly in non-endemic settings. Rapid and accurate diagnostics are essential to guide therapy, implement infection control measures, and support epidemiological surveillance. Traditional methods, including viral culture and early serology, are often limited by long turnaround times or low sensitivity in the acute phase of infection. In this study, we discuss two cases reported for the first time of emerging viral infections in Calabria, Southern Italy, diagnosed using rapid molecu

Towards healthy sleep environments: Ambient, indoor, and personal exposure to PM2.5 and its implications in children's sleep health.

The growing impact of climate change and escalating wildfire seasons has led to heightened ambient air pollution, potentially affecting children's sleep health. However, current epidemiological research often relies on outdoor weather data to model the environmental impacts on sleep health, potentially mischaracterizing the actual bedroom environment. To address these challenges, we conducted experiments to investigate the relationships among ambient, indoor, and personal exposure to PM2.5 concentrations and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children. We employed computational fluid dynamics (C
