Prevalence and predictors of latent tuberculosis infection among Italian State Policemen engaged in assistance to migrants: a national cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Better knowledge about tuberculosis (TB) and latent TB infection (LTBI) epidemiology is a crucial step for the development of effective strategies towards the control and elimination of this deadliest and persistent health threat. No study has investigated LTBI epidemiology in policemen who act as an interface with cross-border migrants. METHODS: A survey to measure the LTBI prevalence and assess the demographic, professional and clinical features potentially associated with tuberculin skin test (TST) positivity was performed in Italian State Police (ISP) employees engaged, even o

[Epidemiologic profile of children with burns from the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara "Dr. Juan I. Menchaca", 2009-2011].

BACKGROUND: Burns are a public health problem, ranking among the 20 principal causes of morbidity in Mexico. Children are a more vulnerable group to suffer from these injuries. For that reason, we analyzed cases in order to gain a better comprehension and to propose preventive measures for this problem. The aim of the study was to determine the epidemiological profile of those injuries to allow us to plan and implement actions for burn prevention. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study that included demographic characteristics of the child, the parents and the burn injuries from childr

Similarity-based codes sequentially assigned to ebolavirus genomes are informative of species membership, associated outbreaks, and transmission chains.

Background.  Developing a universal standardized microbial typing and nomenclature system that provides phylogenetic and epidemiological information in real time has never been as urgent in public health as it is today. We previously proposed to use genome similarity as the basis for immediate and precise typing and naming of individual organisms or viruses. In this study, we tested the validity of the proposed system and applied it to the epidemiology of infectious diseases using Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreaks as the example. Methods.  One hundred twenty-eight publicly available ebolavir

Epidemiology of hospitalised osteochondritis dissecans in young people: incidence, geographical variation and trends over time in England from 2002 to 2010.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is an important cause of knee pain in physically active adolescents, but its aetiology remains controversial. Modern data on its epidemiology are lacking. The aim of this study was to analyse the hospitalised incidence, age and sex distribution, trends over time and geographical variation in OCD in the whole of England. METHODS: Hospital episode statistics (HES) data were analysed for OCD over the period 2002/3 to 2010/11 for England. HES datasets were record-linked so that anyone with multiple admissions for OCD was counted once only. RESULTS: The

AIM: To characterize the features of juvenile parotitis in a prospective setup and epidemiology. METHODS: All children with parotitis admitted to Helsinki University Central Hospital 2005-2010 were recruited. Clinical characteristics, given treatment, outcome, blood leukocyte count, C-reactive protein, serum amylase and trypsinogen, SPINK-1 genotype and mumps antibodies were recorded. To map the epidemiology, a questionnaire was sent to 1000 randomly selected 13-year-old children. Onycomychosis due to Scytalidium spp.: a clinical and epidemiologic study at a University Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Scytalidium sp. is a filamentous (thread-like), saprobic fungus which affects soil and plants. It is currently considered a primary pathogen of the nail. The prevalence of nail infections caused by this fungus has been increasing in recent decades, although few published studies have been done on its epidemiology. OBJECTIVE: To study clinico-epidemiological data referring to patients with onychomycosis caused by Scytalidium spp. at a University Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. METHODS: We evaluated the clinical and epidemiological data of 30 patients with onychomycosis by Scytalidium

Acute liver failure: a life-threatening disease.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 200 to 500 patients develop life-threatening acute liver failure (ALF) in Germany each year. Only sparse data are currently available on the epidemiology and causes of this condition and on potential treatments for it. This article summarizes our current knowledge of the causes, clinical course, and treatment of ALF. METHOD: We selectively reviewed the pertinent current literature on ALF from Germany and abroad. RESULTS: A shift is currently taking place in Germany with respect to the predominant causes of ALF: The leading cause was formerly acute viral hepatitis, bu

BACKGROUND: To establish the relationship between videokeratoscopic indices and the degree of epidemiological exposure to keratoconus in three groups of clinically normal subjects. METHODS: Cross-sectional study in which 75 subjects lacking clinical signs of keratoconus were divided into three groups according to epidemiological exposure to the condition: 25 fellow eyes of subjects with clinical signs on the contralateral eye only (the "fellow eye" group), to be compared to 25 first-degree relatives of patients with keratoconus (the "relatives" group) and 25 controls without a family history

Ocular involvement in Adamantiades-Behçet's disease in Berlin, Germany.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies demonstrate a prevalence of Adamantiades-Behçet's disease (ABD) in the range of 0.12-420 per 100,000 inhabitants, with the highest rates in Istanbul, Turkey, and the lowest rates in the USA. Ophthalmological data on the prevalence of ocular involvement are limited for ABD in Germany, because most epidemiological studies are based on rheumatological or dermatological data. Berlin is the city with the highest number of non-native German inhabitants, and its multi-ethnic character renders it uniquely appropriate for epidemiological studies on ABD. METHODS: We
