Seven patients developed Pseudomonas aeruginosa urinary tract infections following urodynamic studies, over a two-month period. One patient developed septicaemia and meningitis and died following rupture of a berry aneurysm. Two others required hospital admission for intravenous antibiotic treatment. Four mandibular screw-plate locking systems were studied in sheep. Three to four centimetres angular continuity resections of the mandible were performed and the defects bridged with pre-bent angular reconstruction plates fixed with four screws in the body part and three in the ramus. OBJECTIVE: Premature infants who are discharged from intensive care nurseries are known to be at increased risk for apnea, bradycardia, and oxygen desaturation while in the upright position. These small infants also do not fit securely in standard infant car seats. We evaluated 160 electrocardiograms taken after placement of central venous catheters (CVC) to determine their locations. Usable recordings were obtained in 154 patients. Subsequent radiographs revealed 30 misplaced catheters. Twenty-five of those were detected by CVC electrocardiograms. There were five false positive and five false negative traces. Implant units, manufactured by Medtronic, Inc., have been implanted in 31 patients for treatment of drop-foot. The principal problem encountered in this series was inflammatory reaction. This was observed in seven patients, and was serious enough in five to require removal of the implant. BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic migration of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters is a potentially life-threatening complication that can arise during blind insertion of central venous catheters when the guide wire becomes entangled with the filter. In this study, we reviewed the occurrence of iatrogenic migration of IVC filters in the literature and assessed methods for preventing this complication.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted to identify reports of filter/wire entrapment and subsequent IVC filter migration. Clinical outcomes and complications were identified.
