High-fat diets are often associated with greater caloric intake and weight gain. Since satiety during fat intake is induced by fat in the intestine we investigated the efficiency of a lipid compound that retards fat digestion to regulate fat intake. We found this compound to reduce high-fat food intake, body weight and blood lipids in Sprague-Dawley rats, without causing steatorrhea. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Human studies note sex reversal syndromes and sex difference(s) in the incidence of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Epidemiology surveys record a higher incidence of CDH in females, whilst other reports cite a higher frequency in males. Nitrofen, a teratogen, produces experimental CDH. This agent is speculated to interfere with retinoid acid-steroid signalling pathways and may also be linked with sexual differentiation. This study was designed therefore to test the hypothesis that nitrofen may influence sexual phenotype and frequency of CDH.

An 11-mo-old child with primary hyperoxaluria was scheduled for a nephroureteromia procedure. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with sevoflurane. Two days after the operation, a hepatomegaly was diagnosed, and a considerable increase in liver enzymes was observed. These pathologic findings disappeared without treatment within 7 days. To compare efficacy of conventional therapy, antihypoxants olifen and amthizol (groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively) 49 patients with congestive heart failure stage IIb according to the Vasilenko-Strazhesko classification were treated. Four thiol-containing compounds, WR-2721, WR-149024, WR-168643 and WR-361, were compared as photoprotectors of murine feet. The protector doses were the maximal tolerated intraperitoneal doses, administered 24 h after injection of Photofrin II and 15 min before illumination with 630-nm laser light.
