Peripheral nervous system abnormalities, including neuropathy, have been reported in people with cystic fibrosis. These abnormalities have largely been attributed to secondary manifestations of the disease. We tested the hypothesis that disruption of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene directly influences nervous system function by studying newborn CFTR(-/-) pigs. We discovered CFTR expression and activity in Schwann cells, and loss of CFTR caused ultrastructural myelin sheath abnormalities similar to those in known neuropathies. Consistent with neuropathic chan

IMPORTANCE: This is the first report, to our knowledge, of a child with torticollis due to saccular dysfunction.
OBSERVATION: An 18-month-old infant with torticollis was referred for postural imbalance and observed rotary nystagmus. The infant had undergone physical therapy treatment of left torticollis for nearly 15 months. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) were recorded to assess saccular function and caloric stimulation and positional and rotational testing were performed to evaluate other vestibular receptors. The child demonstrated abnormal cVEMP findings, with a lo

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a DNA virus that mainly causes infectious mononucleosis. Ocular manifestations are rare and typically mild. Only a few cases of EBV involving the retina or the optic nerve have been reported. Herein, we report the case of a 67-year-old man with bilateral chorioretinitis and optic neuritis due to EBV. The patient had no previous ocular history and presented with decreased vision in both eyes. His past medical history included EBV encephalopathy, which was confirmed serologically, a few months before. Ophthalmological examination revealed bilateral chorioretinitis and

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a rare disorder, described in the nineteenth century by Caleb Parry and Moritz Romberg, characterized by acquired and slowly progressive atrophy of one side of the face. The pathogenesis of PRS is still unclear. Immune-mediated processes are thought to be a basic factor in PRS etiology, but autonomic nervous system might also be impaired. A case of PRS in a 26-year-old woman with coexisting disturbances in the lower left limb is presented. The multimodal electrophysiological studies were done, including electroencephalography, visual, brain auditory, somatosenso

A significant number of patients with bilateral vestibulopathy suffer from cerebellar ataxia and central vestibular symptoms and vice versa. We examined 31 patients presenting with the combination of gait and stance ataxia, cerebellar ocular motor signs, and a bilaterally pathological head-impulse test (HIT). Tests included neuro-orthoptical examination, electromyography and neurography, caloric irrigation, pure-tone audiogram, vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials, and volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Only 17 of 31 patients had a pathological caloric irrigation. Twenty-three patie

The aim of this study was to retrospectively review the clinical presentation, diagnostic features, in particular cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs), and the outcomes of surgical repair for superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome (SSCDS). SSCDS is a well-described syndrome of auditory and vestibular symptoms due to a bony dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal in the middle cranial fossa. A series of six procedures on five patients with SSCDS who underwent surgical repair via a middle fossa craniotomy were retrospectively reviewed. Preoperative and postopera

Endolymphatic mastoid shunt surgery (EMSS) is widely performed in patients with medically intractable Meniere's disease. Although many patients report an improvement of symptoms after surgery, the mechanisms which are responsible for the relief of complaints are not known. To date, only few studies exist which studied the influence of EMSS on vestibular function. The present study examines the effect of EMSS on saccule function by measuring vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and the effect on lateral semicircular canal function by sinusoidal harmonic acceleration (SHA) testing. No changes i

Emerging pathophysiological findings suggest that primary dystonia originates partly though not exclusively from brain dysfunction involving the basal ganglia and cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical motor circuits. Studies applying various neurophysiological tests, including spinal and brainstem reflexes, transcranial magnetic stimulation, somatosensory evoked potentials and magnetoencephalography, have documented numerous pathophysiological abnormalities in the various forms of primary dystonia. Owing to differences in the methodology used and in the clinical features of the patients enrolled,

The carotid bodies are the major peripheral chemoreceptors that detect changes in arterial blood oxygen level. PACAP-deficient mice are prone to sudden neonatal death and have reduced respiratory response to hypoxia and hypercapnia. To investigate whether PACAP contributes to the chemotransduction in carotid body, we studied the action of PACAP on glomus cells isolated from rat carotid body. We found that PACAP triggered cytosolic [Ca2+] ([Ca2+]i) rise in glomus cells. Removal of extracellular Ca2+ reversibly inhibited the PACAP-mediated [Ca2+]i rise. Under voltage clamp conditions and in the

Occipital stimulation in a small group of refractory chronic migraine and cluster headache patients has been suggested as a novel therapeutic approach with promising results. In an earlier study we have shown that a drug-induced block of the greater occipital nerve (GON) inhibits the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR). Now, we sought to examine the effects of low-frequency (3 Hz) short-time nociceptive stimulation of the GON on the trigeminal system. We recorded the nBR responses before and after stimulation in 34 healthy subjects. Selectivity of GON stimulation was confirmed by eliciting somatose

Between attacks, migraineurs lack habituation in standard visual evoked potentials (VEPs). Visual stimuli also evoke high-frequency oscillations in the gamma band range (GBOs, 20-35 Hz) assumed to be generated both at subcortical (early GBOs) and cortical levels (late GBOs). The consecutive peaks of GBOs were analysed regarding amplitude and habituation in six successive blocks of 100 averaged pattern reversal (PR)-VEPs in healthy volunteers and interictally in migraine with (MA) or without aura patients. Amplitude of the two early GBO components in the first PR-VEP block was significantly inc

Auditory neuropathy is defined as a sensorineural hearing loss characterized by normal cochlear hair cell function and absent or abnormal auditory brainstem evoked potentials. These people can hear the sound but can not understand it. They have neural hearing loss and the auditory rehabilitation approach for these people may be different from those who have sensorineural hearing loss. Therefore, screening of auditory neuropathy among hearing impaired students is essential. The prevalence of auditory neuropathy among the students with hearing impairment in specific schools for them was the obje

A 60-year-old woman, who has suffered from bilateral deafness throughout her life, visited our outpatient clinic. Computed tomography (CT) revealed inner ear malformations, which comprise cochlear aplasia with hypoplastic vestibule in the right ear and a common cavity in the left ear, and narrow internal auditory canals. We performed electronystagmography with caloric stimulation and stimulation of earth-vertical axis rotation (EVAR) or off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR), and studied vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and vestibular ocular reflex (VOR). Slight horizontal nystagmus wa
