Hemodynamic effects of small abdominal aortic aneurysm morphologies under resting and exercise conditions.

This study investigated how low-intensity exercise affects hemodynamics in small saccular and fusiform abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Patient-specific CFD simulations were performed under resting and exercise conditions. At rest, saccular AAAs exhibited smaller low-shear, high-oscillatory, and high-activation regions than fusiform AAAs. Exercise eliminated low-shear zones and reduced oscillatory behavior but induced high-shear jets impacting saccular walls, while fusiform AAAs showed more uniform flow. These findings suggest that low-intensity exercise improves adverse hemodynamics and ach

Effect of high-intensity exercise training on functional recovery after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe disorder of the central nervous system characterized by high prevalence and significant disability, imposing a substantial burden on patients and their families. In recent years, exercise training has gained prominence in the treatment of SCI due to its advantages, including low cost, high safety, ease of implementation, and significant efficacy. However, a consensus regarding the effects of various exercise training modalities and intensities on functional recovery in individuals with SCI remains elusive, and the efficacy and risks associated with high-int

Oral function improvement through oral exercise: gender differences in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: Older individuals with systemic diseases and disabilities face an elevated mortality risk, with oral functional decline further contributing to both oral and systemic health challenges. Given the rising prevalence of reduced oral function in older adults, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of oral exercise training on improving oral function and preventing functional decline. Additionally, the study examines potential gender differences in response to the intervention. METHODS: Seventy-seven community-dwelling older adults aged 65 and above participated in a six-week ora

Nicotine dependence comorbid with depressive symptoms may limit immediate cognitive improvement following exercise.

This study investigated how acute bouts of aerobic exercise versus yoga affect inhibitory control differently in smokers with nicotine dependence depending on the presence of depressive symptoms. Thirty adult smokers were equally divided into a depressed smoker group and a non-depressed smoker group based on their Beck Depression Inventory scores. Each participant underwent baseline measurements, a 30 min aerobic exercise session, and a 30 min yoga session on different days. Brainwaves were recorded at baseline and after exercise during the Go/No-Go task. Performance accuracy, response time, a

Acute and Lifelong Endurance Exercise Yields Differential Effects During Circadian Disruption in Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Circadian rhythms are responsible for physiological and behavioral processes coordinated in a 24-h cycle. We investigated whether untimed, long-term voluntary wheel access mitigated circadian disruption and facilitated re-entrainment. METHODS: Thirty-five C57Bl/6J mice ( n = 21 males, n = 14 females) were used in this experiment. Long-term exercised (LTEx) mice ran from 3 wk to 12 months of age. At 12 months, animals were circadian disrupted for 14 d and then re-entrained for 7 d. Long-term sedentary (LTSed) animals were disrupted but had no access to a wheel. Another long-term

Exercise prior to cognitive behavior therapy sessions for depression: a feasibility pilot study.

Exercise directly improves mood and cognition. Providing exercise immediately before cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) sessions may therefore enhance the clinical responsiveness to CBT. The present pilot study examined the feasibility and direction of effect of exercise+CBT versus CBT in depressed outpatients using a stepped wedged design. Thirty-three patients received either group-based CBT (12-16 weeks) or group-based exercise+CBT within specialized mental healthcare settings. Weekly therapist-supervised exercise sessions (45 min, moderate intensity, running/indoor cycling) were provided dir

Shared and distinct adaptations to early-life exercise training based on inborn fitness.

Low cardiorespiratory fitness increases the risk for cardiometabolic disease. Endurance exercise training promotes cardiorespiratory fitness and improves cardiometabolic risk factors, but with great heterogeneity. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the metabolic phenotype imparted by low parental (inborn) cardiorespiratory fitness would be overcome by early-life exercise training, and that exercise adaptations would be influenced in part by inborn fitness. At 26 days of age, male and female rat low-capacity runners (LCR, n = 20) and high-capacity runners (HCR, n = 20) generated by artificial

Immune regulatory mechanisms of different exercise methods promoting Parkinson's rehabilitation: A narrative review.

Parkinson disease (PD) is the second largest and most common neurodegenerative disease globally, following Alzheimer disease. Its pathological features include the deformation and loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta of the midbrain, as well as the aggregation of α-synuclein in the form of Lewy bodies. This leads to motor symptoms such as resting tremors, muscle rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability, as well as non-motor symptoms including cognitive, emotional, and sleep disorders. Currently, PD is mainly treated by medication and surgery. Medication, t

Examining Exercise-Related Cognitive Errors and Social Support for Physical Activity in Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Worry about fetal health and lack of social support are commonly reported barriers to physical activity during pregnancy. Exercise-related cognitive errors (ECEs; eg, modifiable cognitions that cause individuals to catastrophize barriers to exercise) may have an independent association with physical activity and influence the relationship between social support and worry with physical activity. This study examined whether maternal-related worry, social support (from family and friends), ECEs, and their interactions differentiated the physical activity of pregnant individuals at 3 d

Detecting Peripheral Airway Response in Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction: The Role of Impulse Oscillometry.

Background: Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is common in children with asthma, but whether it is a phenomenon of central versus peripheral airway reactivity is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate central and peripheral airway responses after an exercise challenge test among children with asthma. Methods: Sixteen children with asthma underwent exercise challenge testing on 2 separate visits: one without any medications (control) and another with pretreatment with 180 µg albuterol (bronchodilator). Central airway EIB was defined as a >10% reduction in FEV1 after exer

Proposed shorter duration protocols for measuring exercise energetics utilizing whole room indirect calorimetry.

Previously, 30 min is the shortest testing duration that is validated for exercise energetics (EXEE; kcal) in human subjects utilizing a whole room indirect calorimeter (WRIC). The objective of this analysis was to show the validity of extrapolating 30-min EXEE from the first 15 min of moderate intensity steady state cycling in human subjects utilizing a WRIC. Metabolic data from human subjects that had 30-min EXEE measured within a WRIC (10,000 L), along with simulated EXEE of the same duration determined by propane combustion, were utilized for this analysis. Metabolic data for 30 min of oxy

Aerobic Exercise Affected Lymphocyte Apoptosis by Modulating ROS Release and NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation.

Moderate sports training help to enhance spleen-mediated immune function, while prolonged and high-intensity physical exercises could produce an opposite effect. The specific mechanisms underlying the effects of physical load on apoptosis of splenic lymphocytes remain unclear. To address this gap, we developed a model of physical exercises in rats in order to explore the effect of intensity of these exercises on splenic lymphocyte apoptosis and its potential mechanism. We found that high-intensity exercises reduced the CD4+/CD8+ ratio, increased oxidative stress and mitochondrial membrane pote

The Metabolic Adaptation to Exercise Following Intensity-Specific Aerobic Training in Female Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research has examined the impact of training intensity on substrate utilization during acute exercise. Despite sex differences in the metabolic response to exercise, few studies have examined females. PURPOSE: This study compared the utilization of substrate during acute exercise following 8 wk of low-intensity (LoT) and high-intensity (HiT) aerobic training (AT) in female rats. It was hypothesized that both training programs would result in increased fat oxidation during acute exercise, with HiT demonstrating a higher shift toward fat oxidation. METHODS: Thirty-six fem
