INTRODUCTION: Sparganosis mansoni is a parasitic infection caused by the plerocercoid larva of Spirometra mansoni, a tapeworm commonly found in amphibians and reptiles. Humans become accidental hosts through ingestion of contaminated water or undercooked intermediate hosts, with larvae capable of migrating to subcutaneous tissues, the eyes, or the central nervous system.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case describes a rare presentation of ocular sparganosis in a middle-aged man with no known exposure to traditional risk factors. The live S. mansoni larva, discovered within the Tenon's capsule and me

A new invasive Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess syndrome (IKPLAS) has been described. It is often described as primary liver abscess and metastatic infection in multiple systems. Patients often develop endogenous endophthalmitis (EE), when the infection affects the eyes. Isolated optic neuritis (ON) is an unusual manifestation of Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) infection associated ocular complications. We report a rare case of isolated retrobulbar optic neuritis in a 33-year-old young man on the 4th day of admission with severe pneumonia as the first symptom. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF

Sarcocystis neurona is an unusual species of the genus Sarcocystis. Opossums (Didelphis virginianus, D. albiventris) are the definitive hosts and several other species, including dogs, cats, marine mammals, and horses are intermediate or aberrant hosts. Sarcocysts are not known to form in aberrant hosts. Sarcocystis neurona causes fatal disease in horses (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, EPM). There are numerous reports of fatal EPM-like infections in other species, usually with central nervous system signs and associated with the schizont stage of S. neurona. Here, we report fatal dissemin

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular mucosotropic pathogen of significant medical importance. It is the etiological agent of blinding trachoma and bacterial sexually transmitted diseases, infections that afflict hundreds of millions of people globally. The C. trachomatis polymorphic membrane protein D (PmpD) is a highly conserved autotransporter and the target of broadly cross-reactive neutralizing antibodies; however, its role in host-pathogen interactions is unknown. Here we employed a targeted reverse genetics approach to generate a pmpD null mutant that was used to define the

The investigation was made in Luohe City of Henan Province from April to November, 2008. Cyclops were collected and plerocercoids of Spirometra mansoni were examined by microscope. Skin, muscle and internal organs of frogs and tadpoles were checked to detect spargana by naked eye and/or anatomical microscope. Feces of cats and dogs were collected to examine eggs after washing and precipitation. Spargana from tadpoles were collected to infect cats by oral inoculation. Results showed that the infection rate of plerocercoids in cyclops was 3.5% (3/85) and that of spagarna in tadpoles and frogs wa

Opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) typically presents with chaotic eye movements and myoclonus with some patients exhibiting ataxia and behavioural disturbance. The pathogenesis may be inflammatory with an infectious or paraneoplastic trigger. In this report, we describe four HIV-infected cases with OMS presenting to a tertiary referral centre in Cape Town, South Africa, over a 10-year period. OMS was the initial neurological presentation of HIV-infection in three subjects of whom two had preserved CD4+ cell counts. Immunosuppressive therapy, mainly prednisone, led to a dramatic improvement o

In order to study the effect of antichlamydial antibodies in ocular secretions on resistance to ocular chlamydial infection and clearance of this infection, we have performed linked longitudinal studies in a Gambian village in which trachoma is endemic. We have measured IgG and IgA antibody levels to a local serotype B isolate of Chlamydia trachomatis by amplified enzyme immunoassay, and chlamydial antigen levels in conjunctival swabs using a commercially available immunoassay which detects chlamydial glycolipid. Having previously demonstrated that sharing a bedroom with a case of active trach

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis, commonly known as hydatid disease, is a zoonotic infection resulting from the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. The occurrence of hydatid cysts in the orbital region is uncommon, representing less than 1% of all reported hydatid cases. This report details a unique case of an intramuscular hydatid cyst in the orbital region that led to compressive optic neuropathy.

Background: Corneal infection of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is uncommon and usually limited to the anterior stroma. However, we observed a case of corneal stromal perforation caused by this fungus under a compromised condition. Case: A 73-year-old woman consulted us with a severe corneal ulceration. She was a tangerine orange farmer who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for more than ten years. Before consultation with us, she received pterygium excision in her right eye. She then developed a corneal ulceration and received topical glucocorticoid therapy upon diagnosis of rheumatoid arthr

Syphilis is a rare cause of vision loss that mostly occurs after an infection of the meninges, brain tissue, and parenchyma. Syphilis can mimic auto-immune disease like giant cell arteritis which also manifest as sudden vision loss. Spirochete Treponema pallidum can spread through sexual contact and cause painless ulcers. Spirochetes can disseminate systemically and lead to secondary syphilis. Ocular syphilis can affect all parts of the eye in secondary and tertiary stages. It can present as scleritis, inflammation of the optic nerve, and uveitis. We present the case of a 59- year-old male suf

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To present a novel case of paracentral acute middle maculopathy associated with bilateral optic disk swelling.
METHODS: Retrospective case report.
RESULTS: A 67-year-old woman presented with sudden onset of central vision loss and subsequent bilateral optic disk edema, retinal vessel attenuation, and anterior uveitis. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed signs of inflammation. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography demonstrated the pathognomonic hyperreflectivity of the middle retinal layers consistent with paracentral acute middle maculopathy. Swept-source optical c

Ocular setariases of cattle were reported but those of equine hosts have never been reported in the Republic of Korea (Korea). We found motile worms in the aqueous humor of 15 horses (Equus spp.) from 12 localities in southern parts of Korea between January 2004 and November 2017. After the affected animals were properly restrained under sedation and local anesthesia, 10 ml disposable syringe with a 16-gauge needle was inserted into the anterior chamber of the affected eye to successfully remove the parasites. The male worm that was found in 7 of the cases showed a pair of lateral appendages n

INTRODUCTION: Ocular trauma can cause serious complications in eyes operated for cataract.
CASE: A 70-year- old lady had sustained blunt trauma to the left lower lid which resulted in a sub-conjunctival dislocation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL). The patient had undergone an uneventful manual, small-incision, sutureless cataract surgery with implantation of a PCIOL for senile cataract five years ago in the same eye. She had no ocular or systemic predisposing factors for wound dehiscence. Surgical exploration revealed a scleral rupture 7 mm in length, 2 mm behind the limbus

Stem cell technology has evoked considerable excitement among people interested in the welfare of animals, as it has suggested the potential availability of new tools for several pathologies, including eye disease, which in many cases is considered incurable. One such example is ulcerative keratitis, which is very frequent in horses. Because some of these corneal ulcers can be very severe, progress rapidly and, therefore, can be a possible cause of vision loss, it is important to diagnose them at an early stage and administer an appropriate treatment, which can be medical, surgical, or a combi

Ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (OHS) is a significant cause of vision loss in young and middle-aged adults. We report here a case of an immunocompetent 37-year-old man who presented fever, malaise, headache, and anterior cervical lymphadenopathy for one week, after which he started to experience a sudden loss in visual acuity of his right eye. Fluorescent angiography and an optical coherent tomography demonstrated the presence of a type II choroidal neo-vascular membrane in the right eye, suggesting a diagnosis of OHS. A peripheral blood sample was tested by nested PCR to detect Histoplasma ca

Human T-cell responses to the stress protein alpha B-crystallin in multiple sclerosis (MS)-affected brain samples are dominant when compared to other myelin antigens. The establishment of the apparent autoimmune repertoire against this antigen has been suggested to involve cross-priming during viral infection. Yet, another possibility would be that determinant spreading during ocular inflammation could generate a response to alpha B-crystallin, since it is also a major component of the eye. In this study, we compared serum IgG, IgA and IgM repertoires against a range of eye lens-derived ocular

Trachoma is recognized as one of most important origins of blindness in developing countries and inclusion conjunctivitis is associated with STD in developed countries. We evaluated the diagnostic value of serological tests for the screening of eye diseases associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection. We determined serum IgG, IgA and IgM antibodies to C. trachomatis from 53 Japanese patients with active inflammatory trachoma (aged more than 60 years) and from 107 adult patients (aged 20 to 50 years) with acute inclusion conjunctivitis by ELISA test kit. We detected serum IgG antibodies fro

A 5-year-old boy with left side optic neuritis, which manifested itself 21 days after the onset of rubella eruption, is reported. Seven days after the onset of rash which persisted for 3 days, he was found to be excessively somnolent and disoriented, and a diagnosis of rubella encephalitis was made at our clinic. Clinical symptoms spontaneously subsided 3 days later. Twenty-one days after the appearance of rash (16 days after the onset of encephalitis) he complained of left frontal headache and blurred vision of left eye. The funduscopic examination revealed the left papillitis. Pattern revers

In a survey among 477 inhabitants of the Blue Nile Valley of western Ethiopia 182 (38%) were positive by skin snip investigation for microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus. Of these only 23% had typical clinical signs and symptoms of onchocerciasis. The highest prevalence rate of microfilariae (84%) was found among Nilotics in the lowlands, where 50% of the children above 10 years, and 90% of adults above 30 years of age, were infected. The mean microfilarial density per skin snip was significantly higher in the high prevalence areas (14) than in the low prevalence areas (3). Positive skin snips

A 50-year-old man who had been taking betamethasone for 20 days experienced a slight bilateral decrease in visual acuity. There were localized dark-gray atrophic lesions at the posterior pole, accompanied by a diffuse detachment of the sensory retina. The retinal vessels appeared to be normal and only minimal anterior uveitis was present in the more severely affected eye. Fluorescein angiograms showed no masking of choroidal fluorescence in the early phase and late-phase fluorescein angiograms showed multifocal leakage of the dye into the subretinal space. Electro-oculographic findings were ab
