[Pesticide poisoning].

Pesticides are one of the families of chemical products most widely used by man. They have been used above all to combat pests because of their effect on harvests and as vectors of transmissible diseases. Pesticides can be classified according to their use (insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, raticides em leader ) or by their chemical family (organochlorates, organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids, Bipyridilium compounds, inorganic salts em leader ). All of them are biocides, which normally implies a high toxicity for humans, which has been a cause for concern since the mid-XX century due

The familial phenotype of obsessive-compulsive disorder in relation to tic disorders: the Hopkins OCD family study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorders have phenomenological and familial-genetic overlaps. An OCD family study sample that excludes Tourette's syndrome in probands is used to examine whether tic disorders are part of the familial phenotype of OCD. METHODS: Eighty case and 73 control probands and their first-degree relatives were examined by experienced clinicians using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Lifetime Anxiety version. DSM-IV psychiatric diagnoses were ascertained by a best-estimate consensus procedure. The prevalence and severity of t

Bardet-Biedl syndrome: a molecular and phenotypic study of 18 families.

The autosomal recessive disorder Bardet-Biedl syndrome is characterised by retinal degeneration, polydactyly, obesity, mental retardation, hypogenitalism, renal dysplasia, and short stature. It is heterogeneous with at least four gene loci (BBS1-4) having been mapped to date. We have studied 18 multiply affected families noting the presence of both major and minor manifestations. Using a fluorescently based PCR technique, we genotyped each family member and assigned linkage to one of the four loci. Given this degree of heterogeneity we hoped to find phenotypic differences between linkage categ

Selection against mutant alleles in blood leukocytes is a consistent feature in Incontinentia Pigmenti type 2.

Incontinentia Pigmenti 2 (IP2) is an X-linked dominant disorder with male lethality. Affected females display a characteristic skin eruption that evolves through four classic stages, frequently accompanied by dental and retinal abnormalities. Non-random (skewed) X-inactivation in peripheral blood leukocytes and in fibroblasts has been observed in females with IP2; however, sample sizes have been small and methods of analysis varied. We have examined X-inactivation in a large group of multigenerational IP2 families, in smaller families, and in isolated cases. Ninety-eight percent of affected fe

A clinical and molecular genetic study of dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy in four European families.

Dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy is a neurodegenerative disorder with characteristic pathology, chiefly described in reports from Japan, and is associated with an unstable CAG trinucleotide repeat in a gene on chromosome 12. We describe four European families, three British and one Maltese, with this mutation. All exhibited autosomal dominant inheritance, and there was evidence for anticipation associated with an increase of the expansion with paternal transmission in two families. Affected chromosomes from patients with dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy had CAG expansions of 58 to 74 repea

Germ-line mosaicism for a valine-to-methionine substitution at residue 553 in the glycoprotein Ib-binding domain of von Willebrand factor, causing type IIB von Willebrand disease.

The origin of new single-gene mutations resulting in inherited disease is an issue which may be at least partially resolved by our enhanced ability to detect these changes. In this report we describe the identification of a missense mutation at codon 553 (guanine to adenine) in the von Willebrand factor (vWf) gene in affected members of a family with type IIB von Willebrand's disease (vWd). We found no evidence for this substitution in 190 normal vWf genes. The encoded substitution of a methionine for a valine at this residue is nonconservative in nature and has affected a vWf protein region w

Fragile X screening program in New York State.

Most fragile X [fra(X)] males in New York State have not been identified. Hence, a large number of female relatives are unaware of their risks for having an affected child. A program was established in New York State in 1987 to screen for the fra(X) syndrome in mentally retarded males with living relatives. The goal of the program is to identify affected males and inform their families about the diagnosis. In this way relatives would be able to assess their risks for having a fra(X) male. In order to identify the males a screening form was developed to assess 10 features which included physica

Oral Health-Related Quality of Life and Its Determinants in Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represent a special population whose characteristics may adversely affect both their own and their families' quality of life. These characteristics include poor oral health, sensory hypersensitivity, restrictive and repetitive behaviours, communication difficulties, medication-related adverse effects, and associated comorbidities. This scoping review aimed to evaluate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children and adolescents with ASD, as perceived by their parents/caregivers, and to identify the factors a

Genotype-phenotype characteristics and disease progression of FAN1-related karyomegalic tubulointerstitial nephropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Biallelic variants in Fanconi Anemia-associated Nuclease 1 (FAN1) cause karyomegalic tubulointerstitial nephropathy (KIN), a condition poorly characterized in terms of kidney survival, patient survival, and clinical characteristics. Therefore, we undertook a cross-sectional collaborative study to better characterize KIN-FAN1. METHODS: To gather data, we distributed a REDCap survey on clinical characteristics and genetic variants of KIN-FAN1 to colleagues and case report authors. RESULTS: Based on the survey, we identified 86 families affected (122 individuals) from 22 countries

Characteristics and spending patterns of high-cost child patients: findings from Fujian in China.

BACKGROUND: The health condition during childhood has been shown to influence an individual's health and socioeconomic status in adulthood. Understanding the concentration and persistence patterns in children's healthcare expenditures is crucial for providing risk protection and promoting the well-being of children. Studies regarding the concentration and persistence of health expenditures have focused mainly on elderly individuals in developed regions. To gain insights into factors that contribute to childhood health expenditures, this article examined children with high costs (that is, in th

A familial missense ACTA2 variant p.Arg198Cys leading to Moyamoya-like arteriopathy with straight course of the intracranial arteries, aortic aneurysm and lethal aortic dissection.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral vasculopathies frequently lead to severe medical conditions such as stroke or intracranial hemorrhage and have a broad range of possible etiologies that require different therapeutic regimens. However, vasculopathies sometimes present with characteristic angiographic findings, that - if recognized - can guide a more specific diagnostic work-up. Certain ACTA2 variants are associated with a distinctive cerebrovascular phenotype characterized by an anomalously straight course of intracranial arteries, dilatation of proximal ICA and stenosis of distal ICA, in the absence of a

Is unipolar mania a distinct subtype?

BACKGROUND: Some recent reports raised the question whether unipolar mania, without severe or mild depression, really exists and whether it defines a distinct disorder. Literature on this topic is still scarce, although this was a matter of debate since several decades. METHOD: Eighty-seven inpatients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, Revised Third Edition, manic episode and at least 3 major affective episodes, in 10 years of illness duration, were systematically evaluated to collect demographic and clinical information. The symptomatological evaluation was conducted

Role of the RBMS Family in Different Cancers and Research Progress.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), as posttranscriptional regulators, can modulate the activity and stability of target RNAs and participate in the whole life cycle of RNA processing, localization, modification and translation. RNA-binding motif single-stranded interacting proteins (RBMSs) comprise a critical subgroup within the RNA-binding protein (RBP) family, sharing the same domain characteristics as other RBPs. Several studies have shown that RBMSs can participate in tumorigenesis and tumor progression through mechanisms such as regulating the expression of oncogenes, growth factors and cell cy

Autonomic and sensory dysfunction in hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: How do small fibers contribute?

Hypermobile EDS (hEDS) is associated with joint hypermobility, early-onset osteoarthritis, chronic pain, and dysautonomia. This study explored sensory-vascular profiles, as both nociceptive and autonomic nerve fibers are part of the small-fiber group. The aim was to examine sensory-vascular characteristics in an hEDS family, with and without dysautonomia. Five female participants (ages 12-60) underwent tilt-table testing, heart-rate-variability analysis, cutaneous vasoconstriction testing, thermal sensory- and microcirculation testing. Four reported pain; two had dysautonomia and vascular hype

[Analysis of variant of GLI3 gene in a child featuring autosomal dominant Pallister-Hall syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical and genetic characteristics of a child with Pallister-Hall syndrome (PHS). METHODS: DNA was extracted from peripheral blood sample from the child and subjected to whole exome sequencing. Suspected variants were verified by Sanger sequencing of his family members. RESULTS: Genetic testing revealed that the child has harbored a heterozygous c.3320_3330delGGTACGAGCAG (p.G1107Afs×18) variant of the GLI3 gene. Neither parent was found to carry the same variant. CONCLUSION: The c.3320_3330delGGTACGAGCAG (p.G1107Afs×18) frameshift variant of the GLI3 gene probabl
