Maternal influence on susceptibility of offspring to Brugia malayi infection in a murine model of filariasis.

We have used the severe combined immunodeficient C.B-17-scid/scid mouse to investigate the influences of maternal immune status and parasite burden on the susceptibility (or resistance) of offspring to infection with the human filarial parasite, Brugia malayi. C.B-17-scid/scid mice are permissive for infection while immunocompetent C.B-17(-)+/+ mice are uniformly resistant. Reciprocal matings of C.B-17-scid/scid and C.B-17(-)+/+ mice were performed. The C.B-17-scid/scid females were either naive or infected with Brugia malayi. The resulting immunocompetent C.B-17-scid/+ and C.B-17(-)+/scid pro

Expressed emotion in the families of patients with schizophrenia and its influence on the course of illness.

This paper presents the results of a study carried on an urban population in Belgrade investigating the connections between relapse in schizophrenia and the expressed emotion (EE) status of families where at least one of the patient's parents was a member of the household. The overall rate of high EE was just under 50%, in the middle of the range of values reported in studies carried out elsewhere. Relapse was found to be 10 times more frequent in patients whose families were rated high in EE. The sample consisted of 30 patients with hebephrenic schizophrenia and 30 with paranoid schizophrenia

The needs of family members of organ and tissue donors.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the needs of family members of organ and/or tissue donors during the events of organ donation. DESIGN: Retrospective, exploratory, descriptive. SETTING: Eastern Canada. PARTICIPANTS: Seven families who had consented to organ and/or tissue donation in 1988 were interviewed in their homes, 10 to 15 months after the sudden and unexpected loss of their loved one. The sample represented nine individual family members whose relationship to the donors included three mothers, two fathers, one husband, two wives, and one sister. All families consented to organ and/or tissue d

The reasons for early weaning among mothers in Teheran.

In order to identify the reasons for early weaning in Teheran, we interviewed 900 mothers using a systematic randomized sampling method. A total of 15% of the mothers were illiterate, 93% were housewives, and 97% had given birth in hospitals. Only 3% of the newborns benefited from rooming-in facilities in hospital, and 68% were bottle-fed while still in hospital. In 3.1% of cases the mother had not breast-fed her newborn at all. Of those who had breast-fed their infant, 38% used only their own milk, whereas 62% used a combination of breast milk and infant formula. The median duration of breast

Familial cancers associated with subtypes of leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

To investigate whether a history of hematolymphoproliferative cancers (HLP) and other cancers among a parent or sibling is a risk factor for specific subtypes of leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), data from a population-based case-control study, in Iowa and Minnesota, of 578 leukemia cases, 622 NHL cases and 1245 controls were evaluated. Having at least one sibling with HLP significantly increased the risk for all leukemias combined (odds ratio (OR) = 2.3) and for NHL (OR = 2.7). In particular, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) was significantly increased among those reporting a sibli

Influence of morphine exposure during adolescence on the sexual maturation of male rats and the development of their offspring.

The effects of adolescent morphine exposure on the sexual maturation of male rats, their reproductive capacity and the development of their progeny were examined. Groups of prepubescent male rates (25-27 days of age) were implanted with morphine- or placebo-pellets (one on Day 1, then two pellets on Days 4, 7 and 10); the pellets were not removed to assure the sustained release of morphine for 3 to 4 weeks and to avoid the confounding effects of a precipitated withdrawal syndrome. Groups of animals were sacrificed at weekly intervals through adulthood for an assessment of reproductive endocrin

Enhancement of social learning family interventions for childhood conduct disorder.

Social learning family intervention (SLFI) is the treatment of choice for young children exhibiting severe conduct disorder and antisocial behavior. Despite the reported success of this intervention, high levels of resistance, poor engagement, and inadequate maintenance of improvements are observed for a substantial proportion of distressed families. These obstacles have inspired enhancement efforts to improve basic social learning family-intervention models. The present review identifies promising approaches for maximizing treatment gains for the conduct-disordered child. Relevant studies wer

X-linked dominant hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy.

Modern techniques have defined the hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) as a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders. This includes a rare variant with X-linked dominant inheritance. We have traced this disorder through 6 generations of a large Canadian kindred; neurological and electrophysiological examinations were performed in 57 family members and nerve biopsies were studied in 2 affected males, early and late in the disease; 42/83 family members were affected. No male-to-male transmission was encountered in 19 sons of affected fathers, whereas all their daughters expresse

Malformations in infants of diabetic mothers.

Maternal insulin-dependent diabetes has long been associated with congenital malformations. As other causes of mortality and morbidity have been eliminated or reduced, malformations have become increasingly prominent. Although there is not universal agreement, the great majority of investigators find a two- to threefold increase in malformations in infants of insulin-dependent diabetic mothers. This increase is not seen in infants of gestational diabetics. It probably is not present in women whose diabetes can be controlled by diet or oral hypoglycemic agents. The risk does not appear to be pr

Whole exome sequencing identified a novel compound heterozygous mutation of nephrocystin 4 in a child with nephronophthisis-a rare case report.

Nephronophthisis (NPHP), an autosomal recessive kidney disorder characterized by chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis, is the most prevalent monogenic cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Previous studies have identified variants in more than 20 genes, designated NPHP1 to NPHP20, and in additional loci as the genetic causes of NPHP. Here, a Chinese patient who presented with NPHP and proteinuria was enrolled. By employing whole exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing, we identified a rare compound heterozygous mutation in the NPHP4 gene (c.2611C > T/p.R871X and c.2768G > A/p.R923H) in the p

Hemoglobin Evans Associated with HBA1 Mutation: First Report from Rosario, Argentina.

Hemoglobin Evans is a rare, unstable α-chain variant resulting from a valine-to-methionine substitution at codon 62 (E11) of the α-globin gene, previously reported only in HBA2. We describe the first documented case involving the HBA1 gene (HBA1:c.187G > A), identified in a 3-year-old boy who was evaluated for persistent anemia. Laboratory findings revealed hemolytic anemia with low haptoglobin, a negative Coombs test, anisopoikilocytosis, basophilic stippling, and Heinz bodies. The isopropanol instability test was positive in the patient, his father, and his sister, while molecular analysis c

Tracing the Right Path: Determination of Large Pedigree Segmentation and Relatedness.

Large population databases frequently include complicated family structures that are amenable to modern biometric methods: allowing for intergenerational and extended pedigree analyses. To date, much of the latent potential of these resources remains untapped due to numerous complexities that arise in their analysis. Two difficult and critical problems are (1) finding independent extended families within larger population databases, and (2) determining coefficients of relatedness among all pairs of individuals within those extended families. If these problems were solved, researchers could mor

Novel Mutations in the MC2R Gene in a Patient With Familial Glucocorticoid Deficiency (FGD): A Case Report and Functional Study.

PURPOSE: Familial glucocorticoid deficiency (FGD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by resistance to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), leading to isolated glucocorticoid deficiency. This study aims to identify the genetic basis of FGD in a Chinese patient and investigate the functional consequences of the detected MC2R mutations. METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing was performed to detect pathogenic variants in the MC2R gene. The effects of these mutations on MC2R mRNA and protein levels were analyzed using qPCR and immunoblotting. Additionally, a luciferase reporter assay wa

Two siblings with lipoid congenital adrenal hyperplasia: first reported case in Serbia and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Lipoid congenital adrenal hyperplasia (LCAH) is an uncommon but life-threatening autosomal recessive disorder. It is caused by a mutation in the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), encoded by the STAR gene. METHODS: Clinical manifestations of two siblings with primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) were described. A female infant was admitted to the hospital at six months of age for vomiting and failure to thrive. The diagnosis of PAI of unknown etiology was established. The girl's younger brother was diagnosed with PAI at the age of 1.5 years during a febrile illness. His

The burden of poverty-related shame: Impact of comparative environment and social support.

Shame is considered a fundamental aspect of understanding poverty. This study explored the association between the comparative environment, social support from one's father, mother, and best friend, and poverty-related shame. In addition, the study examined how these factors relate to self-esteem as well as social and emotional adjustment, based on Walker's model of poverty-shame nexus. A total of 351 Chinese college students were included in the final analysis (poverty group: 155, non-poverty group: 196). A multigroup analysis revealed an association between the comparative environment and po

Parent Dyadic Coping and Parent-Child Relationship Quality in Families of Autistic Children.

BACKGROUND: Within two-parent households, the extent to which parents are satisfied in their couple relationship is theorized to influence the parent-child relationship. Parents in a satisfying couple relationship are thought to be better able to jointly manage and cope with everyday child-related problems and stressors than parents dissatisfied with their couple relationship. METHOD: The current study conducted a within-couple cross-sectional examination of the associations between couple relationship satisfaction (actor and partner), parent-child relationship quality, and dyadic coping. [Two cases of Perry disease (Perry syndrome) in the same family with normal 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) myocardial scintigraphy].

This study investigated two cases. Case 1 involves a 53-year-old man who suffered from sleep apnea syndrome at age 48. Moreover, he was involved in a rear-end collision while driving and was admitted to the hospital at age. He exhibited impaired consciousness, postural tremors, and bradykinesia in the upper extremities. Subsequently, he was managed on a ventilator due to unexplained alveolar hypoventilation. Case 2 is his younger sister, a 46-year-old woman, who was being treated for depression and began to show signs of parkinsonism around age 43. The metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) myocardial

A Novel SCN5A Mutation (c.589G>A) Is Associated With Intermittent Atrial Standstill and Conduction System Disease.

BACKGROUND: SCN5A-associated conduction system disease, though well known, is poorly characterized. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 23-year-old young woman who is a heterozygous carrier of a novel SCN5A c.589G>A (p.Asp197Asn) sequence variation. Phenotypic features in this patient include conduction abnormalities characterized by right bundle branch block, left anterior fascicular block, and a prolonged PR interval at baseline along with symptomatic postexertional pauses and junctional rhythm, likely due to atrial standstill. Her father, who carries the same sequence variation, also has l
