Hepatocellular carcinoma arising in association with von-Meyenburg's complexes: an incidental finding or precursor lesions? A clinicopatholigic study of 4 cases.

Biliary hamartomas or von-Meyenburg complexes form part of a spectrum of ductal plate malformation that includes polycystic liver disease, congenital hepatic fibrosis, and Caroli disease. These lesions are known to have neoplastic transformation. Development of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is well described in these complexes. Rarely, hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) have been seen in association with bile duct hamartomas, however; it is not clear whether development of HCC is an epiphenomenon unrelated to the precursor lesion or biliary hamartomas may progress to liver cancers. We herein r

Proteomic analysis of alcohol-associated hepatitis reveals glycoprotein NMB (GPNMB) as a novel hepatic and serum biomarker.

Alcohol consumption remains a leading cause of liver disease worldwide, resulting in a complex array of hepatic pathologies, including steatosis, steatohepatitis, and cirrhosis. Individuals who progress to a rarer form of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH), require immediate life-saving intervention in the form of liver transplantation. Rapid onset of AH is poorly understood and the metabolic mechanisms contributing to the progression to liver failure remain undetermined. While multiple mechanisms have been identified that contribute to ALD, no cures exis

Genetic resistance to liver fibrosis on A/J mouse chromosome 17.

BACKGROUND: Because the histological and biochemical progression of liver disease is similar in alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), we hypothesized that the genetic susceptibility to these liver diseases would be similar. To identify potential candidate genes that regulate the development of liver fibrosis, we studied a chromosome substitution strain (CSS-17) that contains chromosome 17 from the A/J inbred strain substituted for the corresponding chromosome on the C57BL/6J (B6) genetic background. Previously, we identified quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in

Body composition mediates the association between fatty acids and NAFLD risk: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate how body composition, particularly adiposity distribution, mediates the association between circulating fatty acids (FAs) and the incidence of severe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: In the UK Biobank cohort, plasma FAs were measured using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in 107,593 participants at baseline. Cox regression models were utilized to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between FAs and the incidence of severe NAFLD. Additionally, mediation analyses were conducted

Immersion Frequency Optimisation and Species-Specific Metabolic Profiles of Colchicum autumnale and Colchicum bivonae in Temporary Immersion Systems.

Temporary immersion systems (TISs) are an advanced biotechnological platform for the large-scale cultivation of medicinal plants and the consistent production of high-value secondary metabolites. In this study, we evaluated three immersion regimes with stand-by periods of 4, 8, or 12 h, each paired with a 15-minute immersion period, to optimise shoot growth and colchicine accumulation in Colchicum autumnale L. and Colchicum bivonae Guss. The 4 h stand-by/15 min immersion regime yielded the highest growth index (C. autumnale: 0.75 ± 0.08; C. bivonae: 1.25 ± 0.03) and maximum colchicine content

Mechanistic insights into quality and flavor enhancement of sour meat by ultrasound-assisted frying: the role of oxidative and Maillard reactions.

This study investigated the effects of ultrasound-assisted frying (UAF) on the quality and flavor of fermented sour meat and elucidated the underlying mechanisms using metabolomics and correlation analyses. Ultrasound treatment significantly reduced cooking loss, improved moisture retention (10.38 % in the control; +5.53 % at 400 W), and decreased hardness, chewiness, and shear force, thereby enhancing tenderness and texture. Lipid oxidation was promoted in an intensity-dependent manner. GC-IMS identified 98 volatile compounds, including 17 differential ones responding distinctly to ultrasound

Elucidating the source and metabolic impact of 2-phenylethanol on Lactiplantibacillus pentosus 1 using a fish broth fermentation model.

BACKGROUND: The quality of traditional fermented sour fish is shaped by metabolic interactions between core microbiota dominated by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts. 2-Phenylethanol (2-PE) is a characteristic metabolite and quorum-sensing molecule of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This study aims to identify the primary source of 2-PE via pure culture of dominant strains, and preliminarily investigate its effects on LAB in a fish broth fermentation model under different fermentation modes. RESULTS: Single-strain fermentation experiments confirmed that Saccharomyces cerevisiae 31 is the main p

Optimization and Validation of a Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction with Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometric Detection for Quantification of Trace Aroma Compounds in Chinese Liquor (Baijiu).

The detection of trace aroma compounds in samples with complex matrices such as Chinese liquor (Baijiu) requires a combination of several methods, which makes the analysis process very complicated. Therefore, a headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) method coupled with two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) was developed for the quantitation of a large number of trace compounds in Baijiu. Optimization of extraction conditions via a series of experiments revealed that dilution of the alcohol content of 8 mL of Baijiu to 5%, followed by the add

Ferroptosis is an iron- and lipid peroxidation-dependent cell death modality and emerging evidence indicates that ferroptosis has great explanatory potential for neuronal loss and associated CNS dysfunction in a range of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, Motor neuron disease, Friedreich ataxia (FRDA)). Ferroptotic death results from lethal levels of phospholipid hydroperoxides that are generated by iron-dependent peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as arachidonic and adrenic acids, which are conjugated to specific phosph

The enological characteristics and the performances of a yeast autolysate produced by high pressure homogenization (HPH-YD) were investigated for the first time in white wine and model solution, in comparison with a thermolysate (T-YD) and a commercial yeast derivative (COMM). In wine-like medium, HPH-YD showed a significant release of glucidic colloids (on average, slightly higher than the other products), also leading to a greater glutathione solubilization with respect to T-YD. Concerning the volatile composition of the autolysates, HPH-YD was characterized by the highest concentration of a
