18F-FDG PET for evaluation of the treatment response in patients with gastrointestinal tract lymphomas.

UNLABELLED: (18)F-FDG PET is highly sensitive and specific for evaluation of the treatment response of nodal and extranodal diseases in patients with malignant lymphomas. However, no data are available in the literature with regard to (18)F-FDG PET for evaluation of the treatment response in patients with lymphomas with gastrointestinal tract (GIT) involvement. This study was undertaken to investigate the usefulness of (18)F-FDG PET in monitoring the response to the treatment of lymphomas in this setting. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 19 patients with different types of lymphomas (10 d

FDG-PET findings in the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

This study reports FDG-PET findings in Wernicke-Korsakoff patients. Twelve patients suffering amnesia arising from the Korsakoff syndrome were compared with 10 control subjects without alcohol-related disability. Subjects received [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) imaging as well as neuropsychological assessment and high-resolution MR imaging with volumetric analysis. Volumetric MRI analysis had revealed thalamic and mamillary body atrophy in the patient group as well as frontal lobe atrophy with relative sparing of medial temporal lobe structures. Differences in regional metabolism were iden

Durable remission induced by rituximab-containing chemotherapy in a patient with primary refractory Burkitt's lymphoma.

We describe a 65-year-old man diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma arising from the intestine. The tumor cells had a mature B-cell immunophenotype and rearrangement of the c-myc gene. The patient was treated with intensive multiagent chemotherapy. After four courses of chemotherapy, an ileus developed due to a residual abdominal disease. We administered rituximab in combination with the same chemotherapy regimen. A dramatic clinical improvement was observed and abnormal uptake by 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography disappeared. The patient experienced complete remission for 1 year

Evaluation of good clinical response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in primary breast cancer using [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

To determine whether [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) can predict complete pathological response (pCR) in patients achieving a good clinical response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy for primary breast cancer, 10 patients underwent FDG PET scanning prior to definitive breast surgery. Scan reports were compared with histopathological findings. No abnormal uptake at the primary tumour site was visualised in any patient. 9 of the 10 patients had residual invasive carcinoma at operation, ranging from 2 to 20 mm in maximum dimension. One patient achieved a complete patho

Positron emission tomography in the evaluation of stage III and IV head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: Detection of metastatic disease in head and neck cancer patients is critical to preoperative planning, because patients with distant metastasis will not benefit from surgical therapy. Conventional radiographic modalities, such as CT and MR, give excellent anatomic detail but poorly identify unenlarged lymph nodes harboring metastatic disease. OBJECTIVE: A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) detection of metastatic disease in patients with advanced-stage head and neck cancer. METHODS: Total body FDG-P

Coincidence detection FDG PET in the management of oncological patients: attenuation correction versus non-attenuation correction.

The aim of this study was to determine if attenuation correction (AC) in a dual-head, coincidence, positron emission tomography imaging system (Co-PET) improved image quality, lesion detection, patient staging and management of various malignant neoplasms, compared to non-attenuation corrected (NAC) images. Thirty patients with known or suspected malignant neoplasms underwent fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) Co-PET, which was correlated with histopathology, computed tomography (CT) and other conventional imaging modalities and clinical follow-up. The number and location of FDG avid lesions detected on

The value of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose PET in patients with medullary thyroid cancer.

The early detection of metastases from medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is important because the only curative therapy consists in surgical removal of all tumour tissue. There is no single sensitive diagnostic imaging modality for the localization of all metastases in patients with MTC. Therefore, in many cases several imaging modalities (e.g. ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography and scintigraphy using pentavalent technetium-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid, thallium-201 chloride, indium-111 pentetreotide, anti-CEA antibodies or metaiodobenzylguanidine) must be perform

Feasibility of fluorodeoxyglucose dual-head gamma camera coincidence imaging in the evaluation of lung cancer: comparison with FDG PET.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the feasibility of fluorodeoxyglucose gamma camera coincidence imaging (FDG GCI) in the evaluation of lung cancer in comparison with FDG PET. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with recently diagnosed lung cancer were examined with both FDG PET and FDG GCI on the same day. Pulmonary lesions were analyzed visually and semiquantitatively using the ratio of lesion-to-background counts (L/B ratio). The L/B ratio of FDG PET without attenuation correction (AC) was also calculated and compared. Nodal stations were only visually analyzed. RESULTS: F

Large-scale functional connectivity in associative learning: interrelations of the rat auditory, visual, and limbic systems.

Large-scale functional connectivity in associative learning: interrelations of the rat auditory, visual, and limbic systems. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 3148-3162, 1998. Functional relations between specialized parts of the brain may be important determinants of learned behaviors. To study this, we examined the interrelations of the auditory system with several extraauditory structures in two groups of rats having different behavioral histories. Both groups were trained to associate a tone conditional stimulus (CS) with an aversive unconditional stimulus (US). For one group, a light presented with th

Prognostic value positron emission tomography with [18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose in the low-grade glioma.

OBJECTIVE: The natural history of the supratentorial low-grade glioma (LGG) of the adult is variable, and its malignant transformation is hardly predictable. Because positron emission tomography with [18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) has prognostic value in high-grade gliomas, this study was designed to search for a possible relationship between glucose metabolism and risk of malignant evolution in LGGs. METHODS: Positron emission tomography with FDG was performed in 28 patients with LGGs (22 at the time of diagnosis and 6 after the diagnosis). A metabolic grading system based on the visual

Identification of early recurrence of primary central nervous system tumors by [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

As aggressive neurosurgery and adjuvant therapy have become standard care for most patients with primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors, limitations of posttreatment neuroimaging techniques have become more apparent. Interpretation of computed cranial tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with brain tumors is complicated by changes related to surgery, corticosteroids, radiation, and chemotherapy. We investigated the role of 18F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in these difficult diagnostic situations by obtaining FDG-PET sc

Triple-tracer PET (18F-FDG, 68Ga-DOTANOC, 68Ga-FAPI) maps inter- and intra-lesional heterogeneity in metastatic high-grade neuroendocrine neoplasms.

This pilot study evaluated the diagnostic performance of a triple-tracer PET/CT protocol in 13 patients with advanced, high-grade neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs; Ki-67 > 40%). NENs are characterized by biological heterogeneity and variable tracer avidity, complicating accurate staging and therapy selection. Each patient underwent imaging with [18F] FDG (metabolic activity), [68Ga] Ga-DOTANOC (somatostatin receptor expression), and [68Ga] Ga-FAPI-04 (fibroblast activation) within one week, enabling complementary biological assessment. A total of 92 metastatic lesions were analyzed (29 hepatic,

Lesion-level dual-tracer PET biomarkers predict prognosis in multiple myeloma treated with CXCR4-directed radiopharmaceutical therapy.

BACKGROUND: C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4)-directed radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) represents a promising option for hematologic malignancies. Nevertheless, responses in relapsed and refractory (r/r) multiple myeloma (MM) are heterogenous, emphasizing the need for optimized patient selection before RPT. Current approaches mostly rely on qualitative assessments, confirming relevant CXCR4-expression by CXCR4-directed PET in vital myeloma burden, the latter usually being determined by additional [18F]FDG-PET. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether quantitative imaging biomarkers derived from
