Family Meals and Social Eating Behavior and Their Association with Disordered Eating among Spanish Adolescents: The EHDLA Study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the association of family meals and social eating behavior with disordered eating behavior in Spanish adolescents. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that included 706 adolescents (43.9% boys) from the Eating Habits and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study (aged 12 to 17) from Valle de Ricote, Region of Murcia, Spain. The frequency of family meals was assessed by asking participants to report how often their family, or most household members, had shared meals in the past week. Social eating behavior was evaluated using three statements: "I e

Evaluation of the MC4R gene across eMERGE network identifies many unreported obesity-associated variants.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) plays an essential role in food intake and energy homeostasis. More than 170 MC4R variants have been described over the past two decades, with conflicting reports regarding the prevalence and phenotypic effects of these variants in diverse cohorts. To determine the frequency of MC4R variants in large cohort of different ancestries, we evaluated the MC4R coding region for 20,537 eMERGE participants with sequencing data plus additional 77,454 independent individuals with genome-wide genotyping data at this locus. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The sequen

Survival of Listeria innocua in dry fermented sausages and changes in the typical microbiota and volatile profile as affected by the concentration of nitrate and nitrite.

The involvement of nitrate and nitrite in the formation of N-nitrosamines in foods is a matter of great concern. This situation has led to revise the real amount of nitrate and nitrite needed in meat products to exert proper technological and safety activities, and also to extensive research to find alternatives to their use. The present study addresses the possibility of reducing the ingoing amounts of these additives below the legal limits established by the current European regulations. Different concentrations of nitrate and nitrite were tested on Spanish salchichón-type dry fermented saus

Mechanisms underlying the efficacy of a rodent model of vertical sleeve gastrectomy - A focus on energy expenditure.

OBJECTIVE: Bariatric surgery remains the only effective and durable treatment option for morbid obesity. Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) is currently the most widely performed of these surgeries primarily because of its proven efficacy in generating rapid onset weight loss, improved glucose regulation and reduced mortality compared with other invasive procedures. VSG is associated with reduced appetite, however, the relative importance of energy expenditure to VSG-induced weight loss and changes in glucose regulation, particularly that in brown adipose tissue (BAT), remains unclear. The aim

Comparing the standardized amino acid digestibility of an alternative protein source with commercially available protein-based ingredients using the precision-fed cecectomized rooster assay.

Using single-cell-based proteins in pet foods is of interest, but little testing has been done. Therefore, our objective was to determine the amino acid (AA) digestibilities, assess protein quality of a novel microbial protein (MP) (FeedKind), and compare it with other protein-based ingredients using the precision-fed cecectomized rooster assay. Test ingredients included: MP, chicken meal (CM), corn gluten meal (CGM), pea protein (PP), and black soldier fly larvae. Thirty cecectomized roosters (n = 6/ingredient) were randomly assigned to test ingredients. After 24 h of feed withdrawal, rooster

COMT Inhibitors in the Management of Parkinson's Disease.

Levodopa treatment remains the gold standard for Parkinson's disease, but shortcomings related to the pharmacological profile, notably, oral administration and the consequent occurrence of motor complications, have led to the development of several add-on levodopa treatments or to research to improve the method of delivery. Motor fluctuations, and to a lesser extent non-motor fluctuations, concern half of the patients with Parkinson's disease after 5 years of disease and patients identified them as one of their most bothersome symptoms. Catechol-O-methyl transferase inhibitors (COMT-Is) are on

Scalable diversification options delivers sustainable and nutritious food in Indo-Gangetic plains.

Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP) of South Asia have supported bulk of human and bovine population in the region since ages, and a spectacular progress has been made in food production. However, malnutrition, diminishing total factor productivity, and natural resource degradation continue to plague this cereal-dominated region, which is also vulnerable to climate change. Addressing these challenges would require a transition towards diversifying cereal rotations with agroecological cropping systems. A study was, therefore, conducted at the experimental farm of ICAR-CSSRI, Karnal on crop diversificati

Gut clock: implication of circadian rhythms in the gastrointestinal tract.

Circadian and seasonal rhythms are a fundamental feature of all living organisms and their organelles. Biological rhythms are responsible for daily food intake; the period of hunger and satiety is controlled by the central pacemaker, which resides in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus, and communicates with tissues via bidirectional neuronal and humoral pathways. The molecular basis for circadian timing in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) involves interlocking transcriptional/translational feedback loops which culminate in the rhythmic expression and activity of a set of clo

Observation of hepatotoxic effects of 2-n-pentylaminoacetamide (Milacemide) in rat liver by a combined in vivo/in vitro approach.

Milacemide or 2-n-pentylaminoacetamide hydrochloride, a new glycine derivative, was found to cause elevations of plasma transaminases in patients suffering from severe depression and Alzheimer's disease. However, no signs of liver toxicity were observed during the course of earlier conducted subchronic and chronic in vivo studies in rodents and cynomolgus monkeys. In this study an in vivo/in vitro approach has been proposed to detect early alterations in key metabolic and functional liver capacities. Milacemide was administered by continuous i.v. infusion for 7 days to male Sprague-Dawley rats

Yeast Fermentation Modulates Aroma-Active Volatile Profiles and Bioactive Metabolites in Enzymatically Hydrolyzed Kombu (Saccharina japonica) Slurry.

Seaweeds are promising sustainable food resources, yet their utilization is limited by fishy off-flavors mainly derived from lipid oxidation. Although yeast fermentation is widely used for flavor modulation, species/strain-dependent aroma regulation in kombu (Saccharina japonica) slurry remains unclear. In this study, enzymatically hydrolyzed kombu slurry was fermented with five commercial yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, S. boulardii, Pichia kluyveri, Debaryomyces hansenii, and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii) to investigate metabolic and volatile changes. Distinct species/strain-dependent growth a
