Effect of Total Wrist Arthroplasty Alignment on Wrist Range of Motion and Component Impingement.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) component alignment affects wrist range of motion (ROM), component impingement, and tendon forces. METHODS: Six fresh frozen cadaver wrists were moved through five wrist motions before and after implantation of the KinematX TWA using a "refined alignment" strategy: the radial component was aligned parallel to the longitudinal axis of the forearm in the coronal plane, and the carpal component colinear with the ulnar cortex of the long finger metacarpal shaft. Comparisons were made to a prior study that te

Measuring Muscle Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption in Individuals with a Family History of Diabetes.

Background: Post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) contributes to the health benefits of exercise, and changes in EPOC may play a role in the development of diabetes. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a tool used to evaluate muscle metabolism. This study used a novel NIRS-based method of measuring EPOC in the forearm muscles of young adults with and without a family history of diabetes. Methods: Fourteen female adults with and without an immediate family history of diabetes were tested. A two-group, one-day design was used with three protocols: ischemic reperfusion, EPOC, and mitochondrial

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and bone mineral density in type 2 diabetes mellitus: insights from a single-center cross-sectional study in North India.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), recently redefined from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, commonly coexists with type 2 diabetes mellitus and may adversely affect skeletal health through inflammation and insulin resistance. However, research on site-specific bone mineral density (BMD) effects in South Asian populations, particularly Indians, remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between MASLD and BMD at different skeletal sites among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus in North India. METHODS: This cross-sectional study

A Curious Case of Leg Swelling With Eosinophilic Fasciitis, IgA-κ Monoclonal Gammopathy, Proteinuria, and Bilateral Carpal Tunnel Neuropathy: Diagnostic Convergence of Sclerosing Dermato-Fasciitis and Monoclonal Gammopathy.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is a rare sclerosing disorder characterized by limb edema evolving to woody induration with peau d'orange texture and the groove sign. Diagnosis typically requires a full-thickness fascial biopsy, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can noninvasively demonstrate fascial thickening and guide biopsy. EF has recognized associations with hematologic conditions, including monoclonal gammopathy. A previously healthy 64-year-old woman developed progressive lower extremity hyperpigmentation, edema, and painful induration after travel. Over months, she experienced forearm

Loss of a limb: A consequence of traditional bone setting.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Traditional bone setting (TBS) is commonly practiced in many communities worldwide, especially in developing countries in Asia, South America, and Africa, where healthcare resources are less developed. It plays an important role in healthcare delivery systems and remains a widely used alternative to modern medical care for limb fractures. This practice involves using wooden straps and casts to immobilize and stretch the injured limb, often leading to complications such as non-union, malunion, infections, compartment syndrome, and even limb amputations. CASE PRESEN

Conventional versus task-based package organization for out-of-hospital emergency kits: an emergency medical services simulation study.

BACKGROUND: Emergency Medical Service crews are equipped with comprehensive emergency kits for routine care and to provide life-saving interventions in severely ill patients. While guidelines on contents and packing strategies of emergency kits for specific tasks and specialized situations exist, data for the design of out-of-hospital emergency kits in a general urban population is lacking. It may be possible to transfer the promising results of modern in-hospital packing strategies such as task-based package organization (TPO) to an Emergency Medical Service setting. METHODS: Four types of e

Quality of Life and Patient Satisfaction After the Provision of an Orthopedic Knee Scooter.

BACKGROUND: Partial or total avoidance of weight-bearing by a lower limb is regularly needed after trauma and surgery. There are approximately 200 such cases per 100 000 persons per year. Forearm crutches have mainly been used in Germany until now to keep these patients mobile. For those who lack the strength or co - ordination needed to use crutches, a wheelchair may become necessary, or they might find themselves forced to continue weightbearing on the affected limb, with possible impending adverse consequences and complications. METHODS: The supplementary use of a new type of orthopedic sc

Free Tissue Transfer in the Reconstruction of Neck Contractures after Burn Injury: A Case Series.

Background: Recent advances in burn care have significantly improved the survival rate of patients with extensive burn injuries, placing greater emphasis on reconstruction to improve the long-term outcomes of scar deformities. Anterior and lateral neck contractures are common after burn injuries; they limit range of motion, complicate airway management and create significant cosmetic deformities. Traditional methods have been used to release contractures and improve function. However, they are subject to variable results, residual neck tightness, recurrence and suboptimal cosmetic appearance.

The Risk Factors Associated with Grip Lock Injuries in Artistic Gymnasts: A Systematic Review.

Artistic gymnastics (AG) is a sport that demands grace, strength, and flexibility, leading to a broad spectrum of injuries. The dowel grip (DG) is widely used by gymnasts to securely hold onto the high bar or uneven bars. However, incorrect usage of the DG can result in grip lock (GL) injuries. This systematic review aims to (1) identify studies that have investigated the risk factors related to GL injuries among gymnasts and (2) synthesize the key evidence. A comprehensive electronic search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Elsevier, SportDiscus, and Google Scho
