Molecular Characterization of Methicillin- Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a Tertiary Care hospital in Kuwait.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are a major cause of healthcare and community- associated infections due to their ability to express a variety of virulence factors. We investigated 209 MRSA isolates obtained from 1 January to 31 December 2016 using a combination of phenotypic and genotypic methods to understand the genetic backgrounds of MRSA strains obtained in a General hospital in Kuwait. Antibiotics susceptibility was performed with disk diffusion, and MIC was measured with Etest strips. Molecular typing was performed using SCCmec typing, spa typing, and DNA microarray f

Large variations in clinical antibiotic activity against Staphylococcus aureus biofilms of periprosthetic joint infection isolates.

Staphylococcus aureus biofilms have a high tolerance to antibiotics, making the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) challenging. From a clinical perspective, bacteria from surgical specimens are cultured in a planktonic state to determine antibiotic sensitivity. However, S. aureus exists primarily as established biofilms in PJI. To address this dichotomy, we developed a prospective registry of total knee and hip arthroplasty PJI S. aureus isolates to quantify the activity of clinically important antibiotics against isolates grown as biofilms. S. aureus planktonic minimum inhibito

Pharmacokinetic Data Are Predictive of In Vivo Efficacy for Cefixime and Ceftriaxone against Susceptible and Resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae Strains in the Gonorrhea Mouse Model.

There is a pressing need for drug development for gonorrhea. Here we describe a pharmacokinetic (PK)/pharmacodynamic (PD) analysis of extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESC) against drug-susceptible and drug-resistant gonococcal strains in a murine genital tract infection model. The PK determined in uninfected mice displayed a clear dose-response in plasma levels following single doses of ceftriaxone (CRO) (intraperitoneal) or cefixime (CFM) (oral). The observed doses required for efficacy against ESC-susceptible (ESCs) strain FA1090 were 5 mg/kg of body weight (CRO) and 12 mg/kg (CFM); these d

Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Isolated from Healthy Turkeys in Egypt: First Report of Linezolid Resistance.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are gaining much attention as causative agents of serious nosocomial infections in humans. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and phenotypic antimicrobial resistance of CoNS as well as the presence of resistance-associated genes in CoNS isolated from turkey farms in Egypt. Two hundred and fifty cloacal swabs were collected from apparently healthy turkeys in Egypt. Suspected isolates were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The susceptibility testing of CoNS isolates against

Using Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-derived Intestinal Organoids to Study and Modify Epithelial Cell Protection Against Salmonella and Other Pathogens.

The intestinal 'organoid' (iHO) system, wherein 3-D structures representative of the epithelial lining of the human gut can be produced from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and maintained in culture, provides an exciting opportunity to facilitate the modeling of the epithelial response to enteric infections. In vivo, intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) play a key role in regulating intestinal homeostasis and may directly inhibit pathogens, although the mechanisms by which this occurs are not fully elucidated. The cytokine interleukin-22 (IL-22) has been shown to play a role in the

Labial repositioning using polymethylmethracylate (PMMA)-based cement for esthetic smile rehabilitation-A case report.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most common esthetic complaints among dental patients is a gingival smile, which may be of multifactorial etiology, e.g. gingival hyperplasia, skeletal deformities featuring overgrowth of the anterior maxilla, altered passive eruption, maxillary alveolar tooth extrusion, fine lip and hypermobility of lip elevator muscles, which must be diagnosed prior to treatment so that the appropriate management approach can be selected. Maxillary overgrowth may give rise to subnasal skeletal depression where the upper lip retracts to during smiling, causing gingival exposure. The o
