The toxicity of triphenyltin has been determined after its acute oral and intraperitoneal administration in rats, guinea-pigs, rabbits, mice, and hens, after feeding it to rats and guinea-pigs, and after its application to the skin of guinea-pigs. Guinea pigs are the most frequently used animals in phototoxicity studies. However, general toxicity studies most often use Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. To reduce the number of animals needed for drug development, we examined whether skin phototoxicity studies could be performed using SD rats. Two strains of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (UH1 and RH1) were injected intratracheally into guinea pigs. There were no differences in infectivity or mortality, but there was evidence of disseminated infections in more guinea pigs infected with the UH1 strain. Guinea pigs that received sublethal inocula were then rechallenged intratracheally and had a lower mortality rate than did previously uninfected controls.

A sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Na3EDTA) and ethylenediamine (EDA) were subjected to a repeated insult patch test on Hartley albino guinea pigs (10 per compound). All guinea pigs (10 of 10) receiving EDA were sensitized. None of the guinea pigs (0 of 10) was sensitized to Na3 EDTA. The venom of the common Indian catfish P. canius Hamilton (locally called 'Kanmagur') was examined for its pharmacodynamic activity. The LD50 of the venom in mice was found to be 3.9 mg/kg (ip). Peroxisome proliferators are a class of structurally diverse chemicals, which induce liver carcinogenesis in rodents through interaction and activation of the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor alpha (PPARalpha). PPARalpha agonists elicit a powerful pleiotropic response, which include hypolipidaemia. We have examined the response of species that are classically unresponsive to peroxisome proliferators. Whereas hamster responds to PPARalpha agonists by hepatomegaly and induction of marker genes, the guinea pig does not undergo hepatomegaly or induction of marker genes, such as CYP4A13.
