The End-of-Life Experience of Patients With Rare Cancers and Their Caregivers.

Little is known about the end-of-life (EOL) experience of patients with rare cancers (PRC) or their caregivers. From September 2002 to August 2008, 618 stage IV cancer patients [195 PRC and 423 patients with common cancers (PCC)] and their caregivers participated in an interview-based cohort study. Patients were interviewed about EOL preferences, planning, medical care, and followed until death. Interviews with caregivers at baseline assessed caregiver mental and physical health; and postmortem, assessed EOL patient care. PRC were four times more likely than PCC to be receiving both radiation

Surveillance of social and geographic inequalities in housing-related issues: the case of the Eastern Townships, Quebec (Canada).

Even though health inequalities are conditioned by many aspects of the environment, much of the existing research focuses on the social environment. This emphasis has the effect to neglect other environmental aspects such as its physical dimension. The physical environment, which is linked to housing conditions, may contribute to the uneven distribution of health. In this study, we examined 19 housing-related issues among a representative sample of 2,000 adults residing in a Quebec (Canada) health region characterized by a mix of rural, semi-rural, and urban areas. The distribution of these is

Sexual harassment and assault experienced by reservists during military service: prevalence and health correlates.

The current investigation identified the gender-specific prevalence of sexual harassment and assault experienced during U.S. military service and the negative mental and physical health correlates of these experiences in a sample of former reservists. We surveyed a stratified random sample of 3,946 former reservists about their experiences during military service and their current health, including depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, somatic symptoms, and medical conditions. Prevalence estimates and confidence intervals of sexual harassment and assault were calculated. A series of logis

[Low use of drugs among farmers].

BACKGROUND: Farmers have a higher prevalence of depression compared to workers with other occupations. We wanted to investigate whether this corresponds to a more frequent use of antidepressants among farmers and to investigate their use of medication in general. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study population consisted of 20 166 workers aged 40-47 years from the general population, including 398 farmers and 713 part-time farmers, from a population-based health study carried out in a Norwegian county. In addition to type of occupation and use of medical drugs, mental (HADS) and physical (SF-12) hea

Identifying Behaviors Predicting Early Morning Emotions by Observing Permanent Supportive Housing Residents: An Ecological Momentary Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Behavior and emotions are closely intertwined. The relationship between behavior and emotions might be particularly important in populations of underserved people, such as people with physical or mental health issues. We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine the relationship between emotional state and other characteristics among people with a history of chronic homelessness who were participating in a health coaching program. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to identify relationships between daily emotional states (valence and arousal) shortly after waking an

Cost-effectiveness of neck-specific exercise with or without a behavioral approach versus physical activity prescription in the treatment of chronic whiplash-associated disorders: Analyses of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Fifty percent of people injured by whiplash still report neck pain after 1 year and costs associated with whiplash associated disorders (WAD) are mostly attributed to health service and sick-leave costs in chronic conditions. With increasing health care expenditures the economic impact of interventions needs to be considered. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the cost-effectiveness of physiotherapist-led neck-specific exercise without (NSE) or with a behavioral approach (NSEB), or prescription of physical activity (PPA) in chronic WAD, grade 2 to 3. METHODS: This is a secondary cost-effectiv

In-center hemodialysis six times per week versus three times per week.

BACKGROUND: In this randomized clinical trial, we aimed to determine whether increasing the frequency of in-center hemodialysis would result in beneficial changes in left ventricular mass, self-reported physical health, and other intermediate outcomes among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to undergo hemodialysis six times per week (frequent hemodialysis, 125 patients) or three times per week (conventional hemodialysis, 120 patients) for 12 months. The two coprimary composite outcomes were death or change (from baseline to 12 months) in le

Determinants of chronic benzodiazepine use in the elderly: a longitudinal study.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT: * The risk of adverse events due to chronic benzodiazepine use is high in the elderly. * Cross-sectional studies have shown that increasing age, female gender and poor physical and mental health are associated with benzodiazepine use. * When users were re-examined some years later, chronic somatic disease, pain and stress seemed to contribute to the continuation of benzodiazepine use. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS: * This is the first longitudinal study that analyzed the determinants of new-onset chronic benzodiazepine use in community-dwelling elderly. * Symp

The Role of Physical Exercise in Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: Best Medicine-A Narrative Review.

The aim of this paper is to provide a narrative review of the effects of physical exercise in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain. Physical inactivity and sedentary behavior are associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain and can aggravate it. For the management of musculoskeletal pain, physical exercise is an effective, cheap, and safe therapeutic option, given that it does not produce the adverse effects of pharmacological treatments or invasive techniques. In addition to its analgesic capacity, physical exercise has an effect on other pain-related areas, such as sleep quality, ac

Physical activity behavior change in persons with neurologic disorders: overview and examples from Parkinson disease and multiple sclerosis.

Persons with chronic progressive neurologic diseases such as Parkinson disease (PD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) face significant declines in mobility and activities of daily living, resulting in a loss of independence and compromised health-related quality of life over the course of the disease. Such undesirable outcomes can be attenuated through participation in exercise and physical activity, yet there is profound and prevalent physical inactivity in persons with PD and MS that may initiate a cycle of deconditioning and worsening of disease consequences, independent of latent disease process

Health-related quality of life and its determinants among patients with diabetes mellitus in a selected hospital in Sri Lanka: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) is an excellent measure of life expectancy, particularly for those with a specific condition. Evaluation of QoL facilitates clinical decision-making, enhances communication with the patient, and aids in predicting therapy response. QoL can forecast a person's ability to control their illness and preserve their long-term health and well-being. This study aimed to determine HRQoL and its socio-demographic and clinical determinants among Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients attending endocrinology clinics at a tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka.
