Northern fulmars from two breeding colonies in the Canadian Arctic, Cape Vera and Prince Leopold Island, were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) and total mercury (Hg). TiO2/UV photocatalytic oxidation of DDT (1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane), 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene and 4-chlorophenol were examined in aqueous solution in the presence of humic substances and organic mixtures to study if the degradation rates were affected. A reverse-phase, high-performance liquid chromatography method is described for the quantification of 4'-hydroxymephenytoin formed enzymatically from 14C-labeled (S)-mephenytoin following incubation with cDNA-expressed CYP2C19 or human liver microsomes. Analytical separation is achieved using a C18 column developed with a gradient from 10 to 100% methanol, with detection using a scintillation detector. This method is applicable to enzymatic studies for determination of CYP2C19-catalyzed (S)-mephenytoin 4'-hydroxylation activity.

In this contribution, we constructed a library of butenolides with 77 members by parallel synthesis strategy on Merrifield resin. Sixteen 2,3-allenoic acids and 12 polymer-bound aryl iodides were combined to react with each other, and then the polymer-supported products were cleaved to release butenolide derivatives. A low-cost and high effective copper/aluminum (Cu/Al) bimetal has been developed for treatments of halogenated methanes, including dichloromethane, in near neutral and high pH aqueous systems. As a part of Marmara Sea, Izmit Bay (Turkey) has been one of the most polluted sites in the region for the last 25 years. On 17 August 1999, a powerful earthquake along the North Anatolian Fault struck the eastern part of the Marmara region including Izmit Bay. The earthquake destroyed many coastal cities. The Bay was also affected by the quake and subsequent fire in the refinery situated on the north-eastern coast of the Bay. Oceanographic characteristics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels of Izmit Bay (Marmara Sea) have been investigated to find out the degree of contamination.

A 30-year-old man developed paresthesia in the feet, unstable gait and blepharoptosis subsequent to pharyngeal pain while working in a warehouse of imported fruit and vegetable fumigated with methyl bromide and cyanate. Neurological examination showed bilateral blepharoptosis, diplopia, ataxic gait and paresthesia below the inguinal region.
