Dynamic MR imaging of brain tumors in low field using undersampled projection reconstruction.

A new application of the projection reconstruction method was developed, enabling dynamic T(1)-weighted contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance image (MRI) of brain tumors in a low-field imager. Two undersampled projection reconstruction spin echo sequences were implemented in an open low-field (0.23-T) MR imager, one with 64 and another with 42 projections in [0,pi], repetition time 150 ms, echotime 15 ms, and six slices were used in both sequences. The possibility of using these sequences to image dynamic contrast enhancement of brain tumors was studied in laboratory experiments and in two pati

Motion correction algorithm improves right coronary artery image quality at heart rates > 75 bpm in non-ECG-gated coronary CT angiography.

BACKGROUND: Motion artifacts caused by cardiac pulsation remain a major technical challenge in coronary CT angiography (CCTA). Although an advanced cardiac motion correction (CMC) algorithm has been developed and successfully implemented in clinical practice, the effectiveness of this algorithm in improving coronary image quality in clinical settings has not yet been fully investigated. PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact and clinical value of a motion correction algorithm on image quality in non-ECG-gated CCTA. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 76 patients who underwent CCTA for suspected co

Cone-beam CT with flat-panel-detector digital angiography system: early experience in abdominal interventional procedures.

We developed a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) system equipped with a large flat-panel detector. Data obtained by 200 degree rotation imaging are reconstructed by means of CBCT to generate three-dimensional images. We report the use of CBCT angiography using CBCT in 10 patients with 8 liver malignancies and 2 hypersplenisms during abdominal interventional procedures. CBCT was very useful for interventional radiologists to confirm a perfusion area of the artery catheter wedged on CT by injection of contrast media through the catheter tip, although the image quality was slightly degraded, s

Atypical [corrected] participation of visual cortex during word processing in autism: an fMRI study of semantic decision.

Language delay and impairment are salient features of autism. More specifically, there is evidence of atypical semantic organization in autism, but the functional brain correlates are not well understood. The current study used functional MRI to examine activation associated with semantic category decision. Ten high-functioning men with autism spectrum disorder and 10 healthy control subjects matched for gender, handedness, age, and nonverbal IQ were studied. Participants indicated via button press response whether visually presented words belonged to a target category (tools, colors, feelings

Retinal image analysis for disease screening through local tetra patterns.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) are the most prevalent diseases responsible for visual impairment in the world. This work investigates discrimination potential in the texture of color fundus images to distinguish between diseased and healthy cases by avoiding the prior lesion segmentation step. It presents a retinal background characterization approach and explores the potential of Local Tetra Patterns (LTrP) for texture classification of AMD, DR and Normal images. Five different experiments distinguishing between DR - normal, AMD - normal, DR - AMD, pathol

Laparoscopic lymph node dissection for gastric cancer with intraoperative navigation using three-dimensional angio computed tomography images reconstructed as laparoscopic view.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic extended lymph node dissection for gastric cancer is difficult to perform because it requires dissection with preservation of vessels. Therefore, an intraoperative navigation system for the angioarchitecture would be helpful. Recent enhanced volume-rendering computed tomography (CT) can produce clear intraluminal three-dimensional (3D) images. This advanced radiological technology can provide 3D angiographic images reconstructed in the same view as would be observed from a laparoscope inserted into the abdominal cavity. We report our experience with laparoscopic gastre

Diagnosis of Sacroiliitis Through Semi-Supervised Segmentation and Radiomics Feature Analysis of MRI Images.

BACKGROUND: Sacroiliitis is a hallmark of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and early detection plays an important role in managing the condition effectively. MRI is commonly used for diagnosing sacroiliitis, traditional methods often depend on subjective interpretation or limited automation which can introduce variability in diagnoses. The integration of semi-supervised segmentation and radiomics features may reduce reliance on expert interpretation and the need for large annotated datasets, potentially enhancing diagnostic workflows. PURPOSE: To develop a diagnostic model for sacroiliitis and bo

Deep learning-based prospective slice tracking for continuous catheter visualization during MRI-guided cardiac catheterization.

PURPOSE: This proof-of-concept study introduces a novel, deep learning-based, parameter-free, automatic slice-tracking technique for continuous catheter tracking and visualization during MR-guided cardiac catheterization. METHODS: The proposed sequence includes Calibration and Runtime modes. Initially, Calibration mode identifies the catheter tip's three-dimensional coordinates using a fixed stack of contiguous slices. A U-Net architecture with a ResNet-34 encoder is used to identify the catheter tip location. Once identified, the sequence then switches to Runtime mode, dynamically acquiring

Application of the limited-memory quasi-Newton algorithm for multi-dimensional, large flip-angle RF pulses at 7T.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrahigh field MRI provides great opportunities for medical diagnostics and research. However, ultrahigh field MRI also brings challenges, such as larger magnetic susceptibility induced field changes. Parallel-transmit radio-frequency pulses can ameliorate these complications while performing advanced tasks in routine applications. To address one class of such pulses, we propose an optimal-control algorithm as a tool for designing advanced multi-dimensional, large flip-angle, radio-frequency pulses. We contrast initial conditions, constraints, and field correction abilities against

Novel utilization and quantification of Xsight diaphragm tracking for respiratory motion compensation in Cyberknife Synchrony treatment of liver tumors.

PURPOSE: The Xsight lung tracking system (XLTS) utilizes an advanced image processing algorithm to precisely identify the position of a tumor and determine its location in orthogonal x-ray images, instead of finding fiducials, thereby minimizing the risk of fiducial insertion-related side effects. To assess and gauge the effectiveness of CyberKnife Synchrony in treating liver tumors located in close proximity to or within the diaphragm, we employed the Xsight diaphragm tracking system (XDTS), which was based on the XLTS. METHODS: We looked back at the treatment logs of 11 patients (8/11 [XDTS

Developmental changes in effective connectivity associated with relational reasoning.

Rostrolateral prefrontal cortex (RLPFC) is part of a frontoparietal network of regions involved in relational reasoning, the mental process of working with relationships between multiple mental representations. RLPFC has shown functional and structural changes with age, with increasing specificity of left RLPFC activation for relational integration during development. Here, we used dynamic causal modeling (DCM) to investigate changes in effective connectivity during a relational reasoning task through the transition from adolescence into adulthood. We examined fMRI data of 37 healthy female pa
