Risk Factors Associated With Incident Dementia in People Living With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline often follows human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The objective of this study was to explore the factors present at HIV diagnosis associated with the risk of incident dementia. METHODS: A longitudinal observational study was conducted using a nationwide claim database (2008-2021). A cohort was designed using new diagnosis of HIV infection with antiretroviral therapy. Included in the analysis were individuals aged over 40, with > 3-year follow-up and without a diagnosis of dementia within 2 months post-HIV diagnosis. Dementia was defined as diagnosis and

Time series modelling and forecasting of mpox incidence and mortality in Nigeria.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) twice, in response to the global outbreak, first in May 2022 and again in August 2024, after a span of 2 years and 3 months. African countries continue to be a hotspot for the ongoing mpox outbreaks and Nigeria has contributed substantially in exporting the virus to other countries, highlighting the need for an in-depth analysis of outbreak patterns and forecasting to inform public health policy. This study used the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model to perform a 14

Influence of meteorological factors on the incidence of varicella in Chongqing, 2010-2019.

Varicella is a highly contagious disease that represents an escalating public health concern. This study aimed to assess the influence of meteorological factors on varicella incidence, identify vulnerable populations, and estimate the disease burden associated with meteorological exposure. Data were collected from Chongqing Municipality (2010-2019), including varicella case counts and seven meteorological variables. We employed a method combining a quasi-Poisson generalized additive model with a distributed lag nonlinear model and adjusting for potential confounders. A total of 183,692 varicel

A century of weekly notifiable disease incidence data by province in Canada.

Canadian notifiable disease surveillance programmes have recorded communicable disease incidence data, dating back to the late 19th century. A Public Health Agency of Canada web-portal provides summaries of these data from 1924-2023, but lacks details on how incidence varies seasonally and geographically among provinces. The sub-annual (weekly, monthly, quarterly) and sub-national (provincial, territorial) data required to study such patterns appear in government documents, but are available only in typewritten or handwritten hard copies. We digitized and collated these sources to make sub-ann

Don't Miss Syphilis: A Mimicker of Lymphoma in an Era of Rising Incidence.

This report describes the case of a middle-aged man who presented with bilateral inguinal lymphadenopathy and an elevated serum level of soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R), initially raising concern for malignant lymphoma. In Japan, sIL-2R is widely reimbursed as a diagnostic adjunct for lymphoma, which heightened the suspicion of malignancy in this case. However, serologic testing for syphilis returned positive, leading to a diagnosis of active syphilis. Lymph node biopsy was deferred, and the patient was treated with oral ampicillin, resulting in the resolution of lymphadenopathy and no

Incidence and determinants of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Egypt: a retrospective cohort study.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant global public health concern. The incidence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is increasing; however, comprehensive data on its epidemiological and clinical characteristics remain limited, especially among populations who are co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV). This study aimed to assess the incidence and predictors of EPTB in patients co-infected with HIV or HCV in Egypt. We conducted a retrospective cohort study on patients infected with TB who are treated in Egyptian chest hospitals from January 1 to December

Investigation of tuberculosis incidence and particulate matter concentration in the middle east.

Air pollution is the fifth and sixth leading risk factor for global mortality and reduced life expectancy. Studies have established a link between atmospheric pollution and the incidence, hospitalization, and mortality rates of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). The city of Zabol has experienced persistent dust storms for several years, with an average annual PM10 concentration of 206 µg/m³-more than nine times the permissible limit. The results of this study indicate a significant correlation between increased PM10 levels and the incidence of tuberculosis. To model the disease, machine learning (M

Plasma proteome and incident myocardial infarction: sex-specific differences.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Few population-based cohort studies, including both men and women, have explored circulating proteins associated with incident myocardial infarction (MI). This study investigated the relationships between circulating cardiometabolic-related proteins and MI risk using cohort-based and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses and explored potential sex-specific differences. METHODS: The discovery cohort included 11 751 Swedish adults (55-93 years). Data on 259 proteins assessed with Olink proximity extension assays, biochemical, and questionnaire-based information were used. P

Impact of estrogen and progesterone receptor expression on the incidence of endometrial polyps.

Aim: We studied the association of estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) with endometrial polyp (EP) formation. Methods: A total of 129 EP patients and an equal number of disease-free women were evaluated for ER and PR expression in endometrial tissues. Correlation with EP incidence was analyzed, as well as diagnostic value via receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: ER expression was higher and PR was lower in patients than in controls (p < 0.01). ER levels positively correlated with EP incidence, and PR negatively (p < 0.01). Receiver operating characteristic curves

Historical cosmetic talc consumption and incidence of mesothelioma in the United States.

Jointpoint Regression Software from the National Cancer Institute was used to model age-adjusted male and female pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma rates in the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER) 8, SEER 12, and SEER 22 cancer registries. Linear mixed models were then used to determine if there was a statistical association between U.S. cosmetic talc consumption and the 30-year lagged age-adjusted mesothelioma rates (1) over the reporting period for each registry and (2) for the periods of time identified by the jointpoint model where changes in the rate of mesothelioma occurr

Association of birthweight and risk of incident dementia: a prospective cohort study.

Given the epidemiological studies investigating the relationship between birthweight and dementia are limited. Our study aimed to explore the association between birthweight and the risk of dementia, cognitive function, and brain structure. We included 275,648 participants from the UK Biobank, categorizing birthweight into quartiles (Q1 ≤ 2.95 kg; Q2 > 2.95 kg, ≤ 3.32 kg; Q3 > 3.32 kg, ≤ 3.66 kg; Q4 > 3.66 kg), with Q3 as the reference. Cox regression models and restricted cubic splines estimated the relationship between birthweight and the risk of all causes of dementia (ACD), Alzheimer's dis

A systematic review of the incidence and outcomes of ICD-11 defined stroke.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organisation has expanded the definition of stroke to include people with symptoms less than 24 h if they have evidence of stroke on neuroimaging. The impact is that people previously diagnosed as having a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) would now be considered to have had a stroke. This change will impact incidence and outcomes of stroke and increase eligibility for secondary prevention. We aimed to evaluate the new ICD-11 criteria retrospectively to previous TIA studies to understand the change in incidence and outcomes of this type of stroke. METHODS: We condu

Combination therapy for Sneddon syndrome to reduce the incidence of cerebrovascular complications.

BACKGROUND: Sneddon syndrome is an occlusive vasculopathy that presents clinically with generalized livedo racemosa on the skin and transient ischemic attacks, strokes, and cognitive or motor deficits in the central nervous system. Antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy is recommended. Due to the limited therapeutic efficacy and the resulting serious complications, we propose combination therapy with additional infusion cycles of alprostadil and captopril and report initial long-term results. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a systematic retrospective analysis of all patients with primary Sn

Persistent elevation in incidence of pneumonia in children in England, 2023/24.

Since November 2023, the absolute number of attendances at emergency departments for pneumonia among children aged 5-14 years in England have been above expected levels for the time of year. This increased signal peaked during March 2024 but then persisted into early summer 2024 despite decreases in prevalence of seasonal respiratory pathogens. Record linkage between emergency department and laboratory databases points to this unusual activity being driven largely by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Incidence of Gastric Adenocarcinoma in Those With Gastric Atrophy: A Systematic Review.

Gastric atrophy (GA), or atrophic gastritis, is a pre-neoplastic lesion of gastric cancer (GC). It is part of the Correa cascade, which culminates in intestinal-type gastric adenocarcinoma. The cascade posits that intestinal-type gastric adenocarcinoma develops along a defined pathway of pre-neoplastic stages. The cascade begins with chronic gastritis, most commonly caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, and proceeds through GA, gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM), both complete and incomplete, dysplasia, both low and high-grade, and culminating in intestinal-type gastric adenoca

Effect of environmental variables on the incidence of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Brazil and Colombia.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is the most severe of the three forms of Leishmaniasis. In the Americas, Brazil and Colombia present more than 90 % of the cases in the region. Our aim in this research was to estimate the association of the incidence rate of Visceral Leishmaniasis with the following environmental variables: the percentage of area suitable for the vector Lutzomyia longipalpis, the episodes of La Niña and El Niño, the Brazilian and Colombian biomes. Epidemiological data were obtained from the Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Information System and the Colombian National Public Health Su
