A specialized motion capture system for real-time analysis of mandibular movements using infrared cameras.

BACKGROUND: In the last years, several methods and devices have been proposed to record the human mandibular movements, since they provide quantitative parameters that support the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders. The techniques currently employed suffer from a number of drawbacks including high price, unnatural to use, lack of support for real-time analysis and mandibular movements recording as a pure rotation. In this paper, we propose a specialized optical motion capture system, which causes a minimum obstruction and can support 3D mandibular movement analysis in real-

Maxillary sinus disease: diagnosis and treatment.

The maxillary sinus is the paranasal sinus that impacts most on the work of the dentist as they will often be required to make a diagnosis in relation to orofacial pain that may be sinogenic in origin. Maxillary sinus disease is often coincidentally observed on radiographs, and dentists often have to make a diagnosis and plan treatment based on the interpretation of the image. This paper aims to guide the dental professional through some of the disease processes involving the paranasal sinuses and in particular the maxillary sinus. The outcome is to encourage comprehensive history taking and e

Vertical ridge augmentation using titanium mesh.

With tooth loss, there is increased bone loss of the alveolus. In some cases alveolar bone loss can be severe. Severe bone loss may cause difficulty for patients wearing a conventional prosthesis or being restored with dental implants. Severe alveolar bone loss can result in malnutrition, poor self-esteem, multiple dental visits for failed prosthesis, and jaw fracture. In many cases, patients with loss of alveolar bone height or width may require reconstructive procedures. Vertical ridge augmentation remains a challenge in the reconstruction of the atrophic maxilla and mandible. The main probl

Functional results after condylectomy in active laterognathia.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular asymmetry due to overgrowth has two main forms, hemimandibular hyperplasia and hemimandibular elongation. It is necessary to distinguish between inactive and active forms, since surgical treatment of the latter, with a solely morphological aim, could lead to recurrence of further condylar growth. In these cases orthognathic surgery is performed in association with high condylectomy to interrupt the hyperactivity of the condyle. Condylectomy alone in growing patients stops the progression of deformities and sometimes achieves facial symmetry at the end of growth. Some a

Gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia: a syndrome of fibro-osseous lesions of jawbones, bone fragility, and long bone bowing.

We report an unusual generalized skeletal syndrome characterized by fibro-osseous lesions of the jawbones with a prominent psammomatoid body component, bone fragility, and bowing/sclerosis of tubular bones. The case fits with the emerging profile of a distinct syndrome with similarities to previously reported cases, some with an autosomal dominant inheritance and others sporadic. We suggest that the syndrome be named gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia. The patient had been diagnosed previously with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD) elsewhere, but further clinical evaluation, histopathological study,

The central (intraosseous) calcifying odontogenic cyst: an analysis of 215 cases.

This study reviews and analyzes the clinical, radiographic, and histomorphologic features of the 215 cases of central calcifying odontogenic cyst (CCOC) reported in the literature. Based on the present information, a clinicopathologic classification of calcifying odontogenic cyst is proposed. The CCOC is also compared with its peripheral counterpart and the differences discussed.

Development and validation of a method using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry for determination of zoledronic acid concentration in human bone.

A method for the extraction and quantification of zoledronic acid (ZA) from human bone was set up and validated. This method allowed the quantification of ZA from jawbone sequestrations of patients affected by bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) associated with ZA treatment. The analyte was extracted from the bone tissues with phosphoric acid and derivatized using trimethylsilyl diazomethane (TMS-DAM). ZA tetramethyl phosphonate was then quantified by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), showing high accuracy, repeatability and selectivity.

Some dogmas related to prosthodontics, temporomandibular disorders and occlusion.

It is the aim of this paper to give a few examples of dogmas related to prosthodontics and oral implants and to discuss the controversial role of occlusion in the aetiology of temporomandibular disorders. New knowledge is developing at a rapidly increasing rate in dentistry, as in other areas of society. Our lecturers at university taught us many useful things. But, as time goes by, what is still relevant? Some methods are so well established that they deserve to be called dogmas. It is implied that a dogma is not supported by strong evidence, even though it has existed and been practised for

[Swellings in the maxillofacial region (author's transl)].

The most frequent swellings in the maxillofacial region can be traced to odontogenic inflammations. Chronic dental foci exacerbate and break through the soft tissue layer surrounding the jaw. There the purulent material quickly spreads along the muscular pocket and simulates a phlegomonous inflammation. Inflammations of the individual soft part niches have characteristic symptoms. Because of the loose interconnections the infectious material can spread very quickly into the parapharyngeal space and from there downwards into the mediastinum or upwards into the base of the skull. Because of the

The importance of dental implants.

Implant dentistry has evolved into the mainstream of restorative practices all over the world. Maintenance of bone after tooth loss to improve or maintain facial esthetics and improved retention, function, and performance of removable restorations are only some of the advantages for the edentulous patient. No longer are implants considered only when traditional restorations cannot be fabricated. Evidence-based reports indicate implant restorations last longer than those on teeth and the abutment teeth are at less risk of loss or complication.

Successful Endo-Surgical Management of Radicular Cyst - A Clinical Case Report.

The most frequent cystic lesions affecting the jaws are radicular cysts, which present radiographically as an oval or pear-shaped unilocular radiolucency in the periapical region. Radicular cysts are usually asymptomatic. This case study describes the surgical treatment of a radicular cyst involving two maxillary anterior teeth. The diagnosis of radicular cyst was confirmed through a clinical and radiographic evaluation. An apicoectomy was performed, and Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) was placed as the apical barrier. This case report illustrates the effective surgical management of an exten

Cleft Palate-Lateral Synechiae Syndrome: A Case Report.

Lateral synechiae (LS) are fibrous bands extending from the cleft edges to the lateral edges of the tongue. The etiology of LS is still not clear, and although they are rare, they usually coexist with cleft lip palate and other congenital anomalies. In this study, we report a case of cleft palate-lateral synechiae syndrome. In this case, the lateral synechia bands were cauterized and the patient was able to open the jaw fully. Although LS is rare, medical practitioners should have awareness regarding it so that appropriate treatment protocol can be formulated for the patients.
