The term ''putty kidney'' was first used in 1906 by Dr. F. Tilden Brown, a genitourinary surgeon, to describe a well-defined density seen in kidney region on standard radiograph which is caused by a ''putty-like'' substance that had formed a cast inside a tuberculous kidney. The putty kidney is a classic imaging sign, rarely seen nowadays which represents a nonfunctioning autonephrectomized kidney seen in end stage renal tuberculosis.1-5 Here, we describe a 45-year-old female with left flank pain who on imaging had a classic putty kidney which led to an evaluation and later confirmation of a d

The role that sex plays in the development and progression of chronic kidney disease remains a subject of controversy. The lack of clarity in this important area reflects complex interactions between biological factors and cultural and socioeconomic influences that impact the relationship between sex and renal disease. Certainly, additional observational studies are indicated; however, innovative approaches are required to isolate biological processes from cultural influences. Despite these limitations, available data suggest that the progression of renal disease is slower in women than in men

This study aims at evaluating the prevalence of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in a group of 319 hypertensive patients with stage 3b-4-5 chronic kidney disease (according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes classification), compared with 216 patients with essential hypertension and normal renal function. All patients underwent echocardiographic examination. Patients on stage 1-2-3a chronic kidney disease, dialysis treatment, or with previous manifestations of heart failure or other cardiovascular diseases were excluded. Patients with renal disease had significantly worse diasto

A gradually developing reduction in renal blood flow from atherosclerotic renovascular disease results in loss of kidney volume and a decrease in glomerular filtration rate that eventually becomes irreversible. Whether this process fundamentally reflects tissue hypoxia has been difficult to establish. Studies of human renovascular disease have indicated that reductions in blood flow of up to 30% to 40% can be tolerated with preservation of normal oxygenation and structural integrity. These observations are consistent with remarkable stability of poststenotic kidney function during sustained me

Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is an important biomarker for patients with heart failure, hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy. Although it is known that BNP levels are relatively higher in patients with chronic kidney disease and no heart disease, the mechanism remains unknown. Here, we review the functions and the roles of BNP in the heart-kidney interaction. In addition, we discuss the relevant molecular mechanisms that suggest BNP is protective against chronic kidney diseases and heart failure, especially in terms of the counterparts of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). The

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The underlining goal of this review is to offer a concise, detailed look into current knowledge surrounding transient receptor potential canonical channel 6 (TRPC6) in the progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD).
RECENT FINDINGS: Mutations and over-activation in TRPC6 channel activity lead to the development of glomeruli injury. Angiotensin II, reactive oxygen species, and other factors in the setting of DKD stimulate drastic increases in calcium influx through the TRPC6 channel, causing podocyte hypertrophy and foot process effacement. Loss of the podocytes further pr

INTRODUCTION: There is no report of efficacy and safety of canagliflozin, a sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor in post kidney transplant patients with diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pilot study was undertaken in stable renal transplant recipients with preexisting diabetes or new onset diabetes after transplantation (NODAT) to look at the efficacy of SGLT2 inhibitor, cangliflozin. With the introduction of canagliflozin (100 mg), the dose of insulin and/or other oral hypoglycemic agents was reduced if the blood sugar control improved. The parameters monitored were body weight,

Primary glomus tumors of the kidney are rare and have never been reported in children under 16 years of age. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an extremely variable genetic condition that can affect virtually any organ in the body. Only a single case of glomus tumor associated with TSC was reported in 1964. In this article, we describe the clinical, radiologic, and pathological features of a primary renal glomus tumor in an 8-year-old girl with TSC. This tumor is large, has a deep location, and has infiltrative margins and numerous mitoses. However, there was no disease progression in a 16-m

Juxtaglomerular (JG) cells, major sources of renin, differentiate from metanephric mesenchymal cells that give rise to JG cells or a subset of smooth muscle cells of the renal afferent arteriole. During periods of dehydration and salt deprivation, renal mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) differentiate from JG cells. JG cells undergo expansion and smooth muscle cells redifferentiate to express renin along the afferent arteriole. Gene expression profiling comparing resident renal MSCs with JG cells indicates that the transcription factor Sox6 is highly expressed in JG cells in the adult kidney. In

The field of hereditary kidney cancer has begun to mature following the identification of several germline syndromes that define genetic and molecular features of this cancer. Molecular defects within these hereditary syndromes demonstrate consistent deficits in angiogenesis and metabolic signaling, largely driven by altered hypoxia signaling. The classical mutation, loss of function of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor, provides a human pathogenesis model for critical aspects of pseudohypoxia. These features are mimicked in a less common hereditary renal tumor syndrome, known as he

We review the role of the heart, kidneys, and bladder in the pathophysiology of nocturia and nocturnal polyuria. Lower urinary tract symptoms such as nocturia have often been associated with lower urinary tract dysfunction. It is known that the bladder contributes to nocturia in the case of low functional capacity, urgency, and detrusor overactivity. Heart diseases, especially arterial hypertension and congestive heart failure, are closely related to nocturnal polyuria. The main mechanisms include renal hyperfiltration and elevated atrial natriuretic peptide. A number of drugs frequently used

BACKGROUND: Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited condition characterized by progressive development of end-stage renal disease, hypertension, hepatic fibrosis, and cysts in the kidney, liver, pancreas, spleen, thyroid, and epididymis. While malignancies have been reported in association with PKD in adults, the incidence of malignancies in children with PKD is not currently known.
METHODS: We report on five patients with a known history of PKD who developed a malignancy as children at the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. P

BACKGROUND: Supernumerary kidney is an accessory organ with its own encapsulated parenchyma, blood vessels and ureters, either separated from the normal kidney or connected to it via fibrous tissue and ectopic kidney is a migration abnormality of the kidney. Here, we have evaluated a rare case of the supernumerary and ectopic kidney with DMSA, MAG3 and also CT fusion of the images.
METHODS: The absolute divided renal function was calculated for each kidney by DMSA. The MAG3 scintigraphy showed no obstruction in the ureteropelvic junction. Furthermore, the renogram curve and Tmax and time to ½

Although kidney parenchymal tissue can be generated in vitro, reconstructing the complex vasculature of the kidney remains a daunting task. The molecular pathways that specify and sustain functional, phenotypic and structural heterogeneity of the kidney vasculature are unknown. Here, we employ high-throughput bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing of the non-lymphatic endothelial cells (ECs) of the kidney to identify the molecular pathways that dictate vascular zonation from embryos to adulthood. We show that the kidney manifests vascular-specific signatures expressing defined transcription facto

Iron is vital for a vast variety of cellular processes and its homeostasis is strictly controlled and regulated. Nevertheless, disorders of iron metabolism are diverse and can be caused by insufficiency, overload or iron mal-distribution in tissues. Iron deficiency (ID) progresses to iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) after iron stores are depleted. Inflammation is of diverse etiology in anemia of chronic disease (ACD). It results in serum hypoferremia and tissue hyperferritinemia, which are caused by elevated serum hepcidin levels, and this underlies the onset of functional iron-deficiency anemia.

Cholesterol crystal embolism can be spontaneous or iatrogenic, and it can involve any organ of the gastrointestinal tract, presenting with common gastrointestinal symptoms such as bleeding, perforation, obstruction, and inflammation. It is therefore considered the "great masquerader," requiring a high level of suspicion because the condition is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. We present a 69-year-old man who presented with gastrointestinal bleeding and azotemia. He was found to have cholesterol crystal embolization in the kidney and a duodenal leiomyoma, the latter being an

The strong inverse relationship between low levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) led to the designation of HDL as the "good" cholesterol. The atheroprotection is thought to reflect HDL's capacity to efflux cholesterol from macrophages, followed by interaction with other lipoproteins in the plasma, processing by the liver and excretion into bile. However, pharmacologic increases in HDL-C levels have not led to expected clinical benefits, giving rise to the concept of dysfunctional HDL, in which increases in serum HDL-C are not beneficial du

Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a chronic vasculitis disease of unknown etiology. Clinically significant renal disease is relatively common, and renovascular hypertension is the major renal problem. The assessment of TA activity is usually challenging because vascular inflammation may progress to fixed vascular injury without findings of active disease. Until now, the best therapeutic options have not been identified. This review highlights the current perspectives of renal involvement in TA.
