[Prophylaxis of thrombosis induced by chemotherapy or central venous catheters].

INTRODUCTION: Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are well-recognized complications of cancer, especially in patients with a venous access device or receiving chemotherapy. The pathogenic mechanisms of thrombosis in cancer patients involve a complex interaction between the patient's tumor cells and hemostatic system. Chemotherapy and central venous catheters increase the risk of thromboembolism. Prophylactic treatment for these patients remains controversial. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review using the Medline database and abstract books for meetings of the Americ

Mycobacterium other than tuberculosis (MOTT) infection: an emerging disease in infliximab-treated patients.

OBJECTIVES: Infliximab has revolutionized treatment of rheumatologic diseases and inflammatory bowel disease. However, it increases the risk of tuberculosis. Less is known about the development of Mycobacterium other than tuberculosis (MOTT) infection. We review the literature on non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections in infliximab-treated patients and report the first case of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex in an infliximab-treated patient complicated by immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome. METHODS AND RESULTS: MEDLINE search with the keywords mycobacteria and infliximab r

Retrieval of abdominal organs for transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Organ retrieval and donor management are not yet standardized. Different transplant centres apply various techniques, such as single or dual organ perfusion, dissection in the cold or warm, and single or en bloc organ removal. These different approaches may cause inconvenience, especially when more than one organ retrieval team is involved. METHODS: Cochrane Library, Medline and PubMed were searched for publications on multiorgan donor/donation, retrieval technique and procurement. Levels of evidence and grades of recommendation were evaluated based on current advice from the Oxfo

Localized vasculitis of the gastrointestinal tract.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Isolated vasculitis of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a rare entity. Endoscopic biopsies have low sensitivity to diagnose intestinal vasculitis, even though the endoscopic findings may be suggestive of this condition. Our aims were to describe a case of biopsy-proven colonic leukocytoclastic vasculitis and review the literature. METHODS: A patient with biopsy-proven colonic leukocytoclastic vasculitis is described. A Medline database search of cases with localized GI vasculitis between January 1985 and September 2005 was conducted. RESULTS: A 32-year-old man wa

Critical care of immunocompromised patients: human immunodeficiency virus.

OBJECTIVE: To describe critical illnesses that occur commonly in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. METHODS: We reviewed and summarized the literature on critical illness in HIV infection using a computerized MEDLINE search. SUMMARY: In the last 10 yrs, our perception of HIV infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has changed from an almost uniformly fatal disease into a manageable chronic illness. Even patients with advanced immunosuppression may have prolonged survival, although usually with exacerbations and remissions, complicated by therapy-rela

Treatment of functional dyspepsia with antianxiety or antidepressive agents: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia (FD) has not been elucidated precisely; accordingly, effective management of FD has not yet been found. Until now, treatment with antianxiety or antidepressive agents has been empirically applied; however, the efficacy of these treatments has not been established. We carried out this study to estimate the efficacy of these treatment approaches by systematically reviewing the literature concerning trials with agents that are efficacious against anxiety, neurosis, or depression. METHODS: Articles were searched from the MEDLINE database up
