The effect of aging on the nanostructure of murine alveolar bone and dentin.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar bone, dentin, and cementum provide a striking example of structurally different collagen-based mineralized tissues separated only by periodontal ligament. While alveolar bone is strongly remodeled, this does not hold for dentin and cementum. However, additional dentin can be deposited on the inner surface of the pulp chamber also in older age. By investigating alveolar bone and molar of mice, the aim of our study is to detect changes in the mineral nanostructure with aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Buccal-lingual sections of the mandible and first molar from C57BL/6 mice

Buccal corticotomy using piezosurgery as a surgical approach for removal of deeply impacted mandibular teeth: An alternative procedure to avoid pitfalls associated with the conventional technique.

PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate the use of buccal corticotomy (BC) using a piezosurgical approach for the removal of deeply impacted mandibular teeth. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The charts of all patients who underwent BC for the removal of impacted mandibular teeth between 2011 and 2019 at the University Hospital of Geneva were reviewed. The primary outcome variables were (1) the indication for the removal of impacted mandibular teeth by BC, (2) complications. Other variables included age, gender, teeth involved, indication for tooth removal and radiological features. Follow-up was at 1, 3, 6 a

Consecutive tooth agenesis patterns in non-syndromic oligodontia.

Agenesis of two or more consecutive adjacent permanent teeth (consecutive tooth agenesis, CTA) is a serious manifestation of oligodontia requiring long-term, multi-disciplinary treatment. Therefore, the present study investigated the characteristics of the CTA pattern in orthodontic patients with non-syndromic oligodontia. Using panoramic radiographs, the number of agenetic permanent teeth excluding third molars in non-syndromic orthodontic patients was evaluated, and patients with six or more agenetic teeth (oligodontia group, n = 97) and with one to five agenetic teeth (hypodontia group, n =

Retrognathic maxilla in individuals born with oral clefts is due to intrinsic factors and not only due to early surgical treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if the skeletal form of individuals born with oral clefts was associated with maxillary position. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 90 individuals 8 to 12 years old born with or without cleft lip and palate paired by age and sex were used. Skull base length, cranial base angle, cranial deflection angle, and maxillary skeletal length and position were studied. Also, mandibular skeletal length and position, lower anterior facial height, and dental position were defined. Individuals were divided into three groups: 30 individuals born with cleft

Congenital Midline Cervical Cleft: A Variant of Tessier Number 30 Cleft Causing Micrognathia.

Congenital midline cervical cleft is a rare and generally isolated malformation of the ventral neck region with no clear etiology established. Mandibular deformities, such as micrognathia, could be considered as a consequence of a cleft cervical contracture. Complete surgical excision of the subcutaneous fibrous cord at an early age is the primary treatment modality, minimizing growth development problems on surrounding affected tissue. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical, surgical, and histological findings in a female child with congenital midline cervical cleft along with a re

Evaluation of masticatory function in patients with cleft lip and/or palate.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the masticatory pattern in children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) through investigation of the prevalence of reverse sequencing chewing cycles. The study group included 18 patients with CL/P (mean age: 7.4 yr, SD: 1.4 yr), 15 of whom had dental crossbite. The controls included a group of 18 non-CL/P children with the same types of crossbite as the study group (mean age: 7.2 yr, SD: 1.5 yr) and a group of 18 non-CL/P subjects with normal occlusion (mean age: 9.8 yr, SD: 1.9 yr). Mandibular movements during chewing of soft and hard bolus were recorded

Neurosensory Disturbances After Apical Surgery of Mandibular Premolars and Molars: A Retrospective Analysis and Case-Control Study.

OBJECTIVE: Apical surgery is an intervention to treat teeth with persistent or recurrent endodontic infection. The proximity of the mental foramen and mandibular canal may pose a risk of altered sensation when performing surgical interventions in the posterior mandible. The objective of this study was to determine the rate of neurosensory disturbances after apical surgery of mandibular premolars and molars. The secondary objective was to evaluate whether the occurrence of altered sensation correlated with the distances from the apex or the periapical lesion to the relevant anatomical structure

Characterization of Phenotypes and Treatment Modalities in Patients With Treacher-Collins Syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenotypes and treatment modalities (Tx-Mod) in patients with Treacher-Collins syndrome (TCS) using a TCS severity index (TSI). The sample consisted of 14 Korean TCS patients treated at the Department of Orthodontics, Seoul National University Dental Hospital during 1998 to 2019. The TSI was calculated by adding the scores from the number of deformity-involved midface structures (eye, ear, zygoma) and the degree of mandibular hypoplasia (Pruzansky-Kaban type, gonial angle, Sella-Nasion-B point angle). The deformity-involved midface structure, de

Use of a 'low and short' medial cut limits sagittal ramus osteotomy interferences.

The traditional 'high and short' medial cut of the sagittal ramus osteotomy (Hunsuck modification) is a frequent cause of lingual plate interferences in patients undergoing mandibular yaw or cant corrections. We describe how the modified 'low and short' medial cut of the sagittal ramus osteotomy reduces lingual plate interferences with improved passive alignment of the osteotomy segments.

Evaluation and Management of Impacted Teeth in the Adolescent Patient.

The most common oral and maxillofacial surgical procedure in adolescents is excision of impacted third molars. Adolescent patients should be evaluated for third molars starting around age 16 years unless symptomatic at an earlier age. The dental examination should include panorex imaging to assess development, pathologic condition, and possibility of eruption versus impaction. Various classification systems are available to identify the position and difficulty of the proposed surgical procedure. Retained impacted teeth increase the patient's risk of various morbidities including recurrent infe

Reduction genioplasty for mandibular prognathism and long chin.

BACKGROUND: When evaluating patients' profile, surgeons usually note the lack of the chin projection and may suggest chin augmentation, but they rarely discuss reduction of an over-projecting chin. This is unfortunate, since there are quite many individuals who have macrogenia and would aesthetically benefit from corrective surgery, but the chin reduction is seldom offered. The reason for this is the lack of experience, lack of the technical equipment necessary, or sometimes lack of knowledge. The present study conveys 25 years of experience with the reduction genioplasty. METHODS: From 1994

Mechanobehavior and mandibular ramus length in different facial phenotypes.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypotheses that mechanobehavior scores (MBS) were correlated with mandibular ramus lengths (Co-Go) and differed between facial phenotypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects gave informed consent to participate. Co-Go (mm), mandibular plane angles (SN-GoGn, °), and three-dimensional anatomy were derived from cephalometric radiography or cone beam computed tomography. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) energy densities (ED) (mJ/mm3) were measured using dynamic stereometry and duty factors (DF) (%) were measured from electromyography, to calculate MBS (= ED2 × DF,) for each TMJ.

Dysphagia in a persistently vegetative patient improved by orthodontic treatment of severe dental misalignment.

INTRODUCTION: We describe the treatment of severe dysphagia in a patient left in a persistent vegetative state after an episode of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy following a traffic accident. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old man was in a persistent vegetative state since a traffic accident in 2005, which resulted in cardiopulmonary arrest and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. His airway had been secured with a tracheostomy, and a gastric tube had been inserted; however, he continued to suffer from urinary tract infections, glossoptosis, and silent aspiration of saliva. Both the maxilla and mandible

Are third molars associated with orofacial pain? Findings from the SHIP study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between third molars and orofacial pain. We hypothesized that impacted third molars are a cause of orofacial pain. METHODS: Magnetic resonance images of 1808 participants from two population-based cohorts from Northeastern Germany were analysed to define the status of third molars according to the Pell and Gregory classification. A self-reported questionnaire and a clinical dental examination were used to detect chronic and acute complaints of orofacial pain, masticatory muscle pain, migraine and other types of headache. Logistic regression models were u

Individual mandibular movement registration and reproduction using an optoeletronic jaw movement analyzer and a dedicated robot: a dental technique.

BACKGROUND: Fully adjustable articulators and pantographs record and reproduce individual mandibular movements. Although these instruments are accurate, they are operator-dependant and time-consuming. Pantographic recording is affected by inter and intra operator variability in the individuation of clinical reference points and afterwards in reading pantographic recording themselves. Finally only border movements can be reproduced. METHODS: Bionic Jaw Motion system is based on two components: a jaw movement analyzer and a robotic device that accurately reproduces recorded movements. The jaw m

Aesthetic Zygoma Reduction in Asian Patients.

Zygoma reduction is indicated in patients where the primary aim of surgery is reduction in the width of cheekbones to achieve smoother and more feminine facial aesthetic lines. Surgeons should evaluate the width of midface (bizygomatic width) and the protrusion of zygoma (volume and position of the zygomatic body) when evaluating patients where such a procedure is indicated. Intraoral high-L osteotomy is the most useful method to successfully treat a wide spectrum of zygomatic protrusions and is widely accepted as the treatment of choice for aesthetic purposes. The amount of ostectomy is deter
