Effect of Obstetric Violence on Traumatic Childbirth Perception Among Turkish Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

This study aimed to examine whether obstetric violence predicts traumatic childbirth perception among women. This cross-sectional study included 307 women who gave birth within the healthcare system. Data were collected via an online survey using validated scales. Findings showed moderate levels of traumatic childbirth perception, with obstetric violence significantly associated with higher perceptions of trauma. Marital status, psychological history, pregnancy planning, conception method, and prenatal education attendance also influenced perception. These factors together explained 25.8% of t

Cancer in pregnancy: fetal and neonatal outcomes.

Cancer during pregnancy represents a potential conflict between optimal maternal treatment and fetal development. Traditionally, clinicians operated under the assumption that cancer treatment during pregnancy is incompatible with normal fetal development. However, recent evidence suggests that many diagnostic and treatment modalities cause little or no harm to the developing fetus. As such, both maternal and neonatal interests should be considered when developing management strategies for pregnant cancer patients. In this review, we will discuss issues related to fetal and neonatal health asso

The use of magnesium sulphate for the treatment of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are important causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in the developing countries. There is need to provide the most effective management to pre-eclamptic and eclamptic patients. There is now evidence that magnesium sulphate is the most effective anticonvulsant. METHOD: In this article , a literature review was made on the contribution of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia to maternal mortality and how it can be curtailed by the use of magnesium sulphate. RESULTS: The drug is administered by the Pritchard or Zuspan regimen, although modificat

[The impact of gestational diabetes on the mother and her child: what strategies can we propose?].

Gestational diabetes is often considered as a diagnosis that affects maternal and offspring health exclusively during pregnancy. However, we now know that there are also medium- and long-term risks beyond pregnancy for the mother and the child. Lifestyle changes have been proven to be effective, but they are still a major challenge for young women with no previous health problems and a busy schedule. However, it is also a time that can be seen as an opportunity to take care of one's health in a more global perspective including also transgenerational aspects. This article describes the medium-

Medically uninsured children in the United States: a challenge to public policy.

This article is an examination of the nature and extent of the problem presented by medically uninsured children in the United States. First, the characteristics of the uninsured population are explored with a description of how age, family income, and employment status disproportionately affect families with children. Second, the Medicaid program and its historically inadequate response to this growing problem of uninsured children is examined. Third, the relationship between insurance status and the health and development of children is discussed. Finally, recent public policy initiatives th

Maternal hair--an appropriate matrix for detecting maternal exposure to pesticides during pregnancy.

The detection of exposure of pregnant women to toxicants in the environment is important because these compounds can be harmful to the health of the woman and her fetus. The aim of this study was to analyze for pesticides/herbicides in paired maternal hair and blood samples to determine the most appropriate matrix for detecting maternal exposure to these compounds. A total of 449 pregnant women were prospectively recruited at midgestation from an agricultural site in the Philippines where a preliminary survey indicated significant use at home and on the farm of the following compounds: propoxu

Gestational ozone inhalation elicits maternal cardiac dysfunction and transcriptional changes to placental pericytes and endothelial cells.

Ozone (O3) is a criteria air pollutant with the most frequent incidence of exceeding air quality standards. Inhalation of O3 is known to cause lung inflammation and consequent systemic health effects, including endothelial dysfunction. Epidemiologic data have shown that gestational exposure to air pollutants correlates with complications of pregnancy, including low birth weight, intrauterine growth deficiency, preeclampsia, and premature birth. Mechanisms underlying how air pollution may facilitate or exacerbate gestational complications remain poorly defined. The current study sought to uncov

Maternal exposure to O3 and NO2 may increase the risk of newborn congenital hypothyroidism: a national data-based analysis in China.

Maternal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes in the offspring, but limited studies focused on the impacts of gaseous air pollution on newborn congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Therefore, a national data-based analysis was conducted to explore the association between maternal exposure to gaseous air pollution and the incidence of CH in China. Annual average exposure levels of SO2, NO2, CO, and O3 from January 1, 2014, to December 30, 2014, were acquired from the Chinese Air Quality Online Monitoring and Analysis Platform. The annual incidence of newborn

Tobacco smoke exposure and allergic sensitization in children: a propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is conflicting evidence of the effect of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on the development of allergic diseases in children. Studies have shown that this relationship differs depending on maternal history of the disease. We employed the rigour of propensity score methods to assess this relationship using data from a birth cohort. METHODS: Using n = 662 children from the Wayne County Health, Environment, Allergy and Asthma Longitudinal Study, we assessed the relationship between early-life ETS and subsequent allergic sensitization via a positive skin prick te

Recommendations for indicators: night blindness during pregnancy--a simple tool to assess vitamin A deficiency in a population.

Night blindness during pregnancy caused by vitamin A deficiency is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality among women. Because a history of maternal night blindness is simple and reliable to use, it is recommended as a population-based indicator of vitamin A deficiency. Furthermore, a maternal night blindness prevalence of >/=5% is recommended as a cut-off at which vitamin A deficiency may be considered to be a problem of public health significance within the community. This paper provides the justification for these recommendations. Night blindness during pregnancy is st
