APDDM mixed with i-PRF as a graft material for bone regeneration - A case report.

Demineralized dentine matrix (DDM) has both osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties, and has porous structure which helps in cell and blood vessel penetration and the release of various growth factors from the dentinal tubules. The first human dentine autograft case was done in 2002 in Japan for maxillary sinus lifting. In this clinical report, we use a hand-operated order made stainless steel apparatus to crush the tooth and prepare the DDM chair side. Chemical treatment of DDM particulate was done for demineralization and sterilisation purpose, and used immediately as a graft material

Extra Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma Simulating a Mucocele: A New Location for the Rare Entity.

Angiofibromas are rare, benign, but locally aggressive vascular tumours which account for 0.05-0.5% of all head and neck neoplasms. The common variant of angiofibromas of head and neck region is Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNAF) which is well published in the literature. Incidence of Extranasopharygeal Angiofibromas (ENAF) is relatively rare and most of the published literature favours maxillary sinus as the most common site. We report a rare clinical entity of ENAF involving the upper lip which is first of its kind in the light of literature review owing to its anatomical location.

A massive sinonasal psammomatoid variant of juvenile ossifying fibroma: Report of a rare entity.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an uncommon, benign, bone-forming neoplasm with an aggressive local growth that is distinguished from other fibro-osseous lesions primarily by its age of onset, clinical presentation and aggressive behaviour. JOF is considered as a variant of the ossifying fibroma (OF) and the former includes psammomatoid JOF (PsJOF) and Trabecular JOF (TrJOF). Both variants involve the craniofacial bones with the trabecular variant being more common in the jaws and the psammomatoid variant being more common in the craniofacial skeleton. PsJOF is an unique variant of JOF tha

An isolated nasolacrimal duct osteoma.

Osteomas of the nose and paranasal sinus are common benign tumors that can extend to surrounding structures and result in orbital or intracranial involvement. Presenting symptoms include facial pain, headache, cerebral symptoms, ocular symptoms, and so on, depending on the location and size of the tumor. They commonly occur within the frontal, ethmoid, maxillary, and sphenoid sinuses; however, there are rare cases of reported osteomas in the nasal cavity, turbinate, or orbit. Our case report describes a patient with nasolacrimal duct osteoma who presented with ipsilateral ocular pain, epiphora

Metastatic esthesioneuroblastoma in a horse.

A 17-year-old horse developed severe proptosis of the left eye over a period of 1.5 years. At post-mortem examination a neoplasm was found involving the left ethmoid bone, left maxillary sinus, left orbit, left superior turbinate, and the left eye. Tumour cells were arranged in nests separated by a fine fibrovascular stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were labelled by antibodies against neurofilament protein, synaptophysin, glial fibrillary acidic protein and S-100 protein antigen, but were negative for chromogranin A, cytokeratin and desmin. Electronmicroscopically, the cells sho

Oral Rehabilitation of Severely Atrophic Alveolar Ridge Using Sinus Augmentation and Ridge Split Technique: A Case Report.

Dental implant placement requires adequate bone volume. Sinus augmentation and ridge split technique enhance bone volume in a severely atrophied alveolar ridge. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a patient with severe posterior maxillary atrophy (residual bone height <2.5 mm) and a knife-edge posterior mandibular ridge using lateral sinus floor elevation and ridge split technique, respectively, followed by implant placement. Given the limited high-level evidence on the combined management of these complex anatomical deficiencies and their long-term implant outcomes, this report h

On the paranasal and paratympanic sinuses of perinatal Gavialis gangeticus, with notes on the endocast, ossification observations in the braincase, and cervical vertebrae.

Gavialis gangeticus is a critically endangered, enigmatic, long-snouted crocodylian with uncertain phylogenetic affinities. Molecular and morphological data return disparate results for its placement within the larger diversity of Crocodylia. Because of its conservational status, specimens of Gavialis are rarer in museum collections, especially ones of younger ontogenetic age. Here, we use computed tomography (CT) to image a perinatal specimen to investigate cranial morphology, paranasal, and paratympanic pneumaticity. We provide digital reconstructions of the cranial morphology as an open acc

Long term effects of cutting forceps in endoscopic sinus surgery.

BACKGROUND: At present, some authors prefer cutting forceps to conventional non-cutting forceps in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, based on the assumption of superior wound healing due to mucosal preservation, without any proof of better clinical outcome. The purpose of this study was to elaborate our previously reported short-term results, by evaluating the long-term outcome. METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients, who underwent a bilateral Endoscopic Sinus Surgery procedure, received follow-up in a prospective, double-blinded way. Cutting forceps had been randomly used on one side and non-cutt

[Study of allergic fungal sinusitis in 40 surgical cases of chronic paranasal sinusitis].

Allergic fungal sinusitis is chronic and paranasal, related to fungal allergy. Many papers on allergic fungal sinusitis have been reported in the United State, and the incidence is 5% to 10% among patients with chronic paranasal sinusitis. Although cases of allergic fungal sinusitis have been reported in Japan, the incidence is unclear. We studied allergic fungal sinusitis in 40 consecutive patients--26 men and 14 women--undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery at Keiyukai Sapporo Hospital December 2000 to July 2001. We checked for allergic rhinitis and asthma, a history of surgery for nasal polyps

PARASIDE: An automatic paranasal sinus segmentation and structure analysis tool for magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common and persistent sinus inflammation that affects 5%-12% of the general population. It substantially reduces quality of life, yet its severity is often challenging to assess objectively. The Lund-Mackay score (LMS) rates sinus opacification but is typically assessed manually and subjectively. METHODS: We introduce Paranasal Segmentation for Imaging-based Disease Evaluation (PARASIDE), an automatic tool for segmenting air and soft tissue volumes of the structures of the sinus maxillaris, frontalis, sphenoidalis, and ethmoidalis in T1-weighted m

Enumerating Virus-Like Particles and Bacterial Populations in the Sinuses of Chronic Rhinosinusitis Patients Using Flow Cytometry.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that the sinus microbiome plays a role in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, the concentration of these microorganisms within the sinuses is still unknown. We show that flow cytometry can be used to enumerate bacteria and virus-like particles (VLPs) in sinus flush samples of CRS patients. This was achieved through trialling 5 sample preparation techniques for flow cytometry. We found high concentrations of bacteria and VLPs in these samples. Untreated samples produced the highest average bacterial and VLP counts with 3.3 ± 0.74 x
