Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that poses a serious threat to human and the environment. Rice was found as an important source for human exposure to Hg in some areas. In this study, the transportation and transformation of IHg and MeHg in rice plants exposed to IHg or MeHg were investigated. A simple and sensitive method for label-free, colorimetric detection of metallothioneins (MTs) has been developed by using a thymine (T)-rich oligonucleotide (TRO)-Hg-AuNP system. In this colorimetric strategy, the thiol groups of MTs could interact with mercury from the T-Hg(2+)-T complex to release TRO, resulting in a color change of the system. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of environmental factors: cigarette smoking, dental amalgam fillings, eating habits and osteoporosis, on the concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) in the bone of hip joint in patients in the Orthopedics Clinic in Szczecin, Poland. Surface sediments (0-2cm) were collected at 40 sites along the Tagus Estuary in July and December 2004. The sediments were analysed for total mercury, monomethylmercury (MMHg) and interpretative parameters (e.g. redox potential, pH, C(org)). No significant differences in total Hg, pH, Al, Fe, Mn and C(org) were found between sediments collected in the two periods, but MMHg concentrations were higher in July. A simple and sensitive method for the determination of norepinephrine is described. Norepinephrine (NE) was oxidized by mercury (II) nitrate and the oxidation product was condensed with ethylenediamine (EDA) to form a strong fluorescent compound. The addition of acetone enhances the light intensity. The measurement was carried out at 507 nm with excitation at 420 nm. A linear relationship was obtained between the fluorescence intensity and norepinephrine concentration in the range of 0.01 microM-0.014 mM; the correlation coefficient and the detection limit are 0.99813 and 2.5 nM, respectively.

REVIEW SUMMARY: While this article will review the clinical, anatomic, and pathologic features seen in autism, the primary focus will be to present a new and provocative unifying theory regarding the underlying mechanisms causing this disorder. Current research advances, some controversial, will be discussed, and a novel definition of autism as a "circuit syndrome" will be presented.
