Modifying reaction time tasks parameters in the automated IntelliCage identifies heightened impulsivity and impaired attention in the 3xTg-AD model of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The 3xTg-AD transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an important tool to investigate the relationship between development of pathological amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau, neuroinflammation, and cognitive impairments. Traditional behavioral tasks assessing aspects of learning and memory, such as mazes requiring spatial navigation, unfortunately suffer from several shortcomings, including the stress of human handling and not probing species-typical behavior. The automated IntelliCage system was developed to circumvent such issues by testing mice in a social environment while mea

A general modeling framework for exploring the impact of individual concern and personal protection on vector-borne disease dynamics.

BACKGROUND: As climate variability and extreme weather events associated with climate change become more prevalent, public health authorities can expect to face an expanding spectrum of vector-borne diseases with increasing incidence and geographical spread. Common interventions include the use of larvicides and adulticides, as well as targeted communications to increase public awareness regarding the need for personal protective measures, such as mosquito repellant, protective clothing, and mosquito nets. Here, we propose a simplified compartmental model of mosquito-borne disease dynamics tha

Acceptability and feasibility of a behavioral and mobile health intervention (COMBIND) shown to increase uptake of prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) care in India.

BACKGROUND: A cluster-randomized trial recently demonstrated that an integrated behavioral and mobile technology intervention improved uptake of key components of a Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) Option B+ program, among HIV- infected pregnant/breastfeeding women in India. To guide scale-up and optimize programmatic implementation, we conducted a mixed-methods evaluation of the feasibility and acceptability of this intervention. METHODS: The COMmunity Home Based INDia (COMBIND) study, was conducted in four districts of Maharashtra, India and randomized 119 integrated couns

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis for adolescent girls and young women in Africa: from efficacy trials to delivery.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Africa have high HIV incidence despite scale-up of HIV testing and HIV treatment. Placebo-controlled trials of tenofovir-based pre-exposure prophylaxi (PrEP) in diverse populations demonstrated that PrEP works with close to 100% effectiveness if taken with high, but not perfect, adherence. Divergent efficacy estimates among African AGYW led to demonstration and implementation projects to better understand motivations for HIV prevention, uptake, adherence and persistence to PrEP. To inform PrEP programmes, the design and initial findings

Brief Web-Based Interventions for Young Adult Smokers With Severe Mental Illnesses: A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Study.

SIGNIFICANCE: About 50% of young adults with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other severe mental illnesses smoke tobacco, but few studies have evaluated interventions for this group. METHODS: We conducted a randomized pilot study among 58 young adult smokers with severe mental illnesses comparing a brief interactive web-based motivational tool, Let's Talk About Smoking, to computerized standard education from the National Cancer Institute. An additional 23 subjects received minimal tobacco assessment at baseline and no intervention, providing a comparison condition for naturalistic cessa

Facilitating physical activity and reducing symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial to test a theory-based PrevOP-psychological adherence program (PrevOP-PAP).

BACKGROUND: The present randomized controlled trial, which is crossed with the "PREVenting the impairment of primary Osteoarthritis by high impact long-term Physical exercise regimen" Main Medical Trial (PrevOP-MMT), aims to evaluate a psychological adherence program (PrevOP-PAP), and is designed to support persons with knee osteoarthritis (OAK) in the uptake and maintenance of regular physical activity to reduce OAK symptoms. The PrevOP-PAP is based on the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA), a social-cognitive theory predicting health behavior change in individuals, extended here by social

Anhedonia and Abstinence as Predictors of the Subjective Pleasantness of Positive, Negative, and Smoking-Related Pictures.

INTRODUCTION: Anhedonia-diminished interest or pleasure in response to rewards-is a dimension implicated in several psychiatric disorders linked to smoking. This laboratory study sought to identify motivational mechanisms linking anhedonia and tobacco addiction by testing the hypothesis that anhedonia, abstinence, and their interaction would predict excesses and deficits in the perceived pleasantness of smoking-related and positive pictures, respectively. We assessed the pleasantness of negative pictures as a secondary outcome. METHODS: After a baseline session involving self-report measures

Masculinity, social context and HIV testing: an ethnographic study of men in Busia district, rural eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uptake of HIV testing by men remains low in high prevalence settings in many parts of Africa. By focusing on masculinity, this study explores the social context and relations that shape men's access to HIV testing in Mam-Kiror, Busia district, rural eastern Uganda. METHODS: From 2009-2010 in-depth interviews were undertaken with 26 men: nine being treated for HIV, eight who had tested but dropped out of treatment, six not tested but who suspected HIV infection and three with other health problems unrelated to HIV. These data were complemented by participant observation. Thematic a

Effect of communicating DNA based risk assessments for Crohn's disease on smoking cessation: randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that communicating risk of developing Crohn's disease based on genotype and that stopping smoking can reduce this risk, motivates behaviour change among smokers at familial risk. DESIGN: Parallel group, cluster randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Families with Crohn's disease in the United Kingdom. PARTICIPANTS: 497 smokers (mean age 42.6 (SD 14.4) years) who were first degree relatives of probands with Crohn's disease, with outcomes assessed on 209/251 (based on DNA analysis) and 217/246 (standard risk assessment). Disorder-specific dissociation of orbitofrontal dysfunction in boys with pure conduct disorder during reward and ventrolateral prefrontal dysfunction in boys with pure ADHD during sustained attention.

OBJECTIVE: Among children, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder are often comorbid and overlap clinically. Neuropsychological evidence suggests that children with conduct disorder demonstrate more prominent motivational problems and children with ADHD demonstrate more prominent attention deficits relative to healthy comparison subjects. The purpose of the present study was to investigate disorder-specific abnormalities in the neurobiological correlates of motivation and sustained attention in children and adolescents with pure conduct disorder and children and a

Resilience and vulnerability in the midbrain dopamine system during aging.

The midbrain dopamine system is integral to movement, reward, and motivation, and its dysfunction underlies a range of brain disorders. Age is a primary risk factor for many of these disorders, yet systematic analysis of how the dopamine system changes during healthy aging remains relatively understudied. In this review, we first examine the impact of healthy aging on the dopamine system across sexes and species, including flies, mice, rats, and humans. We next consider the neuroadaptive mechanisms that sustain dopamine neuron function with age. Finally, we contrast the molecular mechanisms of

Attention unleashed: Creative therapy for thoughtful transformation.

Various factors-motivation, interest, fatigue, and external stimuli-influence creative mental processes and attention control (AC). Creative thinking (CT) relies on AC and involves coordinated neural networks and pathways. The cognitive function of AC requires the capacity to direct attention toward distinct features of the environment or internal thoughts. Such selectivity is a key to limiting distractions, preserving focus, and assimilating the essential information needed for CT. Despite progress in creativity research, characterization of underlying neural mechanisms remains limited. To ad

This study analyzes mental health literacy, psychological risk levels, lifestyle habits, social relationships, and academic motivation among secondary vocational students. Data reveals: Overall mental health remains stable, yet only 4.3% meet mental health knowledge standards. Academic burnout is widespread, with students struggling to derive sufficient value from academic achievements. The detection rate of depressive symptoms reached 26.35%, comparable to rates of 28% among high school students and 24% among junior high school students. Students with severe depressive symptoms also exhibit p

Relationship of Behavioral Activation to Time-Varying Sub-Network Coherence in Attention and Reward Neural Networks.

Behavioral drive, or activation, which includes cognitive effort and motivation is critical for accomplishing day-to-day tasks. Yet the brain network dynamics supporting behavioral drive are incompletely understood. Here, we investigate intra-network coherence in attention and reward networks during a modified effort expenditure for reward task. We relate time-varying patterns in intra-network coherence to individuals' self-reported behavioral drive. More time spent in a highly coherent attention network state, as well as lower switching rates between sub-networks, were associated with higher

"We can make an impact": A mixed method examination of Asian American parents' and adolescents' bidirectional racial-civic socialization.

Little is known about Asian American family processes that support adolescents' civic engagement, especially in the context of anti-Asian racism. This convergent mixed-method explanatory study examined bidirectional racial-civic socialization (RCS) between Asian American parent-adolescent dyads around racial discrimination and how RCS relates to adolescents' civic engagement. Using observations of 78 Asian American parent-adolescent dyads discussing anti-Asian hate, exploratory qualitative analyses identified how critical consciousness is intertwined in bidirectional RCS. In surveys with 449 d

COVID-19 pandemic and prosociality: An experiment with healthcare professionals.

We study the extent to which exposure to COVID-19 relates to healthcare professionals' prosociality. Drawing on empirical evidence from an incentivized experiment and a companion survey of healthcare professionals (HCPs) at a large Italian hospital (N = 194), we find that different forms of exposure to COVID-19 predict their altruistic motivation in heterogeneous ways. HCPs who worked in COVID-19 wards or had a close relative or friend severely affected by the virus are more than 5 percentage points more likely to prioritize patient welfare over personal gain, with the association for professi

TimeTraits: extracting functional traits from biological time-series in R.

MOTIVATION: It is currently challenging for scientists to extract meaningful parameters from circadian rhythms that dynamically change over time (i.e. non-stationary rhythms). Circadian rhythms may be non-stationary due to dynamic conditions, such as changes in photoperiod. Circadian rhythms are also nonstationary when plants are suddenly placed under continuous light conditions after a period of entrainment, as their clocks slowly drift without external entrainment signals. RESULTS: TimeTraits provides a series of functions to enable the extraction of parameters from time series data using F

[How Does Communication Escalate in Jeopardizing Situations in Psychiatry? - A Multivariate Replication Study].

MOTIVATION: Results of former communication behavior studies in psychiatric jeopardizing situations should be replicated by mean of speech act analysis. METHODS: The communication of the actors in restaged real jeopardizing situations as well as in simulated alternative scenarios is videotaped, transcribed and analysed using a speech act-based classification system. A multivariate, hypothesis-testing design examines communicative characteristics: changing speaker roles, communicative functions of the speech acts, reactions to speech acts, respective success of speech acts and the degree of es
