Marginal defects of the eyelid were repaired using skin-muscle-mucosa composite grafts from the lower lip without cartilage support in 2 patients. The method is a simple one-stage procedure and takes little time to perform. Because of the wide contact between the grafts and the recipient sites, grafting was successful. Texture and color match is not too problematic in elderly persons.

Expression of Fc and C3 receptors was studied in the rosette tests on isolated peritoneal macrophages of control and melanoma-bearing hamsters. In hamsters with transplanted melanomas an increase of the percentage of macrophages with Fc and C3 receptor expression was observed. The increase was prominent among macrophages from animals with transplanted amelanotic melanoma, a tumor line with greater malignancy and changed antigenicity and immunogenicity.

Three patients with giant cell tumors of the distal radius had en bloc excision of the distal radius and replacement with the ipsilateral fibula. Two of the patients were followed for 16 years and one for 14 1/2 years. Collateral lumbar arterial blood supply to an autotransplanted kidney was angiographically documented in a patient with bilateral Wilms' tumor and postoperative transplant renal artery stenosis. During autotransplantation, most collateral pathways are interrupted. The development of a collateral circulation after autotransplantation may be postulated to begin with a vascular response to postoperative inflammation and adhesions. The small anastomotic pathways so formed may then dilate in response to ischemia resulting from renal artery stenosis.

The effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of yeast glucain in C3D2 mice was studied. The optimal dose for the induction of a cellular exudate was 0.4 mg/kg, producing 17.6 x 10(6) cells on day 7 after injection. The number of T-cells, B-cells and macrophages in this exudate was analysed by the use of morphology, immunofluorescence and the non-specific esterase staining. Primary healing of the perineal wound and the sacral cavity after a.p. resection of the rectum is an old surgical problem. In order to achieve primary healing we are using a lengthened omental graft to fill up the sacral space. Since January 1977 to July 1977 we used this method in 17 patients. 15 patients had very low rectal cancers. 2 patients had to undergo proctocolectomy because of ulcerative colitis. In 14 cases we achieved primary healing, among these the colitis patients. Overall we had three abscess formations in the sacral cavity. One of these patients got in addition an obstruction

Noninfectious virus particles were produced in Ehrlich ascites tumor cells infected intraperitoneally with fowl plague virus. The PFU yield of virus per cell was less than 0.1 and the ratio PFU/HA units in the progeny virus was less than 10(3). A new animal model characterized by hereditary athymia and asplenia was used as a recipient of chronic myelogenous leukemic (CML) cells with the Philadelphia (Ph1+) chromosome. Transplanted CML cells form solid vascularized tumors containing cells similar to those seen in the patient in a long-term culture. Cells taken from the tumors were nearly triploid, retained all human chromosome markers, and had the same antigenic determinants(s) as cells in culture.

Cancer cells are poorly immunogenic and have a wide range of mutations, which makes them unsuitable for use in vaccination treatment. Here, we show that elimination of CD47, a ligand for the myeloid cell inhibitory receptor SIRPα, from tumor cells by genetic deletion or antibody blocking, significantly improves the effectiveness of the immune response to tumour cells.
