Epidemiological studies have shown that low doses of lithium in the environment can have beneficial effects on mental health. Autism spectrum disorder, a neurodevelopmental disorder in which patients exhibit abnormal behaviors, pharmacological interventions usually relied on a range of psychotropic medications. However, such medications often produce severe side effects or are ineffective in symptoms. Finding alternative ways to improve abnormal behaviors in individuals with autism are warranted, in which case lithium may be a relatively safe and effective medication. Lithium salt therapy is u

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders with overactivity, inattention, and impulsivity as core characteristics. Recent studies suggest that 20 % of children with ADHD also develop eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. However, little is still known about the association between ADHD and EDs through childhood and adolescence. Therefore, in the present work, we aimed at summarizing the studies investigating ADHD and EDs in childhood and adolescence over the last

PURPOSE: Mutations in the MED13 gene are reported in the literature in association with clinically variable, neurodevelopmental disorders, which are characterized by mild-to-severe intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, ocular or skeletal abnormalities, congenital cardiac defects, and facial dysmorphisms. Here, we report a patient with an epileptic phenotype carrying a novel missense mutation characterized by developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with infantile spasms.
METHODS: Through trio-based WES, we identified a novel d

BACKGROUND: 47,XYY syndrome (XYY) is a male sex chromosome disorder where subjects have one X chromosome and two copies of the Y chromosome. XYY is associated with a physical phenotype and carries increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Imbalance of excitation and inhibition has been proposed as a putative biological basis of disorders such as ASD [1-3] and several studies have reported atypical brain γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in this population. Given the male preponderance in the prevalence of ASD, the unique presence of the Y chromosome

Autosomal recessive microcephaly and chorioretinopathy (MCCRP) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by delayed psychomotor development, growth retardation with dwarfism, and ocular abnormalities, and its occurrence has been found to be closely related to variants of the gene encoding centrosomes. However, the association between centrosomal duplication defects and the etiology of microcephaly syndromes is poorly understood. It is well known that polo-like kinase 4 (PLK4) is a key regulator of centriole duplication, and the abnormalities of centrosomal function caused by its protein v

Intra-individual variability (IIV) is defined as systematic within-person variation in performance either across test sessions (e.g., test/retest performance on the same task) or in one session (e.g., variations in performance on multiple trials of a single task). Higher levels of IIV have been noted as a characteristic of neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but IIV is yet to be investigated in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). FASD is a term used to describe a range of conditions resulting from prenatal exposure to alcohol. As part of a

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple tics and is often associated with comorbid behavioral problems. Research with generic instruments in child populations showed that comorbid disorders can have a greater impact on health-related quality of life than tic severity. This study investigated the usefulness of a newly developed disease-specific instrument, the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome-Quality of Life Scale for Children and Adolescents (GTS-QOL-C&A), in assessing health-related quality of life in young patients with Tourette syndrome with and without be

Defined by DSM-5-TR as a neurodevelopmental disorder Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has attracted ever-mounting attention from the public, coupled with a growing interest from clinicians, researchers, and patients. This is reflected in significantly higher demand for clinical assessments and frequent media reports of a surge in ADHD cases across the lifespan. These trends are puzzling as it is unknown what they truly reflect: an improvement in clinical detection or a concerning degree of overdiagnosis? A key reason for this uncertainty is our limited understanding of the disor

Neuroscience continues to uncover anatomical, mechanistic, and etiological linkages between mental illness and addiction. The neurodevelopmental pathogenesis of these often intertwined brain disorders is contributed to by both genetic and experiential-causal events. This article introduces the term ecocausatypes to describe traumatically adverse experiences and attachment disruptions that are biologically potent on par with genes, and highly interactive with genetics in causing psychiatric and addiction phenotypes. Neural network theory explains how genotypes and ecocausatypes are biologically

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is estimated to be up to four times as common in males as in females, yet the causes of this prevalence difference are not well established. One possible driver is genetic variation on the X chromosome, as it contains genes capable of contributing to ASD (e.g., PTCHD1, MECP2) and is known to play a role in genetic disorders with differential sex prevalence (e.g., color blindness). However, a lack of power compared to the autosomes combined with the complexities of modeling its biology have led to the X being largely overlooked in sequencing studies. Here, we deve

OBJECTIVES: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder that affects brain development and increases the risk for neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder. Given similar behavioral phenotypes and potential shared neurobiological processes in NF1 and autism spectrum disorder, this study evaluates two markers of brain maturation in youth with NF1 and typically developing youth, including auditory white matter and cortical response latency.
BASIC METHODS: Participants, aged 8-12 years, completed a multimodal neuroimaging protocol that included MRI with diffusion

MED25-related developmental disorder (Basel-Vanagaite-Smirin-Yosef syndrome) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, defined by severe neurodevelopmental delay, corpus callosum abnormalities, ocular involvement, epilepsy, and marked facial appearance. MED25 pathogenic variants interfere with the functioning of the Mediator complex, which is responsible for RNA polymerase II transcription. We report a 9-year-old girl who presents with significant global developmental delay, agenesis of the corpus callosum, congenital cataracts, epilepsy, hypotonia, musculoskeletal abnormalities, and typical cra

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are classified as distinct disorders; however, growing evidence suggests that they share genetic, neurobiological, and symptomatic features. Individuals with ASD have a higher risk of developing schizophrenia, and autistic symptoms frequently co-occur with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD). Recently, a growing number of studies have been focusing on the association between autistic symptoms and clinical outcomes in patients with SSD, shifting the focus from categorical distinctions or overlaps between ASD and SSD to d

The gut microbiota is a dynamic trans-kingdom ecosystem that contributes to host immunological, metabolic, and neuroendocrine homeostasis through the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA). Diet is one of the major environmental factors shaping this axis, as it influences microbial composition, microbial production of neuroactive metabolites, and intestinal barrier integrity. Dysbiosis has been increasingly associated with neurological, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, autism spectrum disorder, and attention-deficit/hypera

Background: Cluster epilepsy related to PCDH19 is a rare X-linked disorder that mainly affects females. Atypical presentations, such as infantile spasms, are exceptionally rare, leading to diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Case Summary: An 8-month-old girl presented with early-onset, drug-resistant epilepsy from 4 months of age, displaying tonic and focal seizures, infantile spasms with hypsarrhythmia, and neurodevelopmental regression. Whole exome sequencing identified a novel heterozygous mutation, c.1072del (p.Val358SerfsTer10), in the PCDH19 gene. Following vigabatrin therapy for infa

Dissociative symptoms may result from both neurobiological conditions, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and traumatic events/exposure, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). However, identifying whether dissociative manifestations are associated with ADHD symptoms or trauma-related manifestations may drive clinicians to select the most effective intervention. Four hundred participants from the general population completed an online survey and were classified based on the presence of PTSD, ACEs, or ADHD symptoms. We compar

This study explored serious mental illness (SMI) in young adult offenders imprisoned for violent or sexual crimes, estimating the effects of neurodevelopmental disorders and early-life risk factors on the development of SMI, and its prospective long-term adverse outcomes. An all-male cohort of 266 violent offenders, assessed during imprisonment when aged 18-25 years (M = 21.8, SD = 1.9), was followed prospectively (Myears = 6.2, SD = 1.3) in Swedish national registers together with a general population group (n = 10,000). The baseline prevalence of SMI in late adolescence or young adulthood wa

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental conditions often exhibit overlapping symptoms, posing challenges for differential diagnosis. Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) manifests as fundamental motor impairments, often along with co-occurring visuospatial difficulties. Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) features visuospatial core challenges, with a less consistent characterization of its motor profile. Strikingly, to date no study has directly compared DCD and NLD profiles.
AIMS: The present study aimed to analyze whether DCD and NLD share any characteristics by contrasting their motor and visuos

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder characterized by recurrent, intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. The association between environmental factors and OCD remains incompletely understood.
METHODS: We applied two-sample multivariate Mendelian randomization analysis by using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables to analyze the possible associations between environmental factors and OCD.
RESULTS: Our results showed that depressive symptoms (p-value = 0.0004, OR = 3.234), neuroticism (p-value = 0.0001, OR = 2.502), and education
