Ischemic proliferative retinopathy (e.g., diabetes mellitus, retinopathy of prematurity, or retinal vein occlusion) is a major cause of blindness worldwide. Abnormalities in energy metabolism and oxidative stress accompany many neurodegenerative diseases, including progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Sixteen Western Whiteface ewes were divided into 2 groups to determine the effects of plant maturity on liver function and weight gains. They were allowed to graze a greater than 95% pure stand of Kochia scoparia for 72 or 55 d. The ability of monophosphoryl lipid A (MLA) to provide prophylactic protection against septic shock was evaluated in a mouse model of induced endotoxin hypersensitivity. Treatments of hypersensitized animals with low doses of MLA attenuated endotoxin lethality and endotoxin-mediated liver damage. The authors report the case of a 42 year old man who smoked and who presented with recurrent spontaneous anginal chest pain followed by syncope due to sinus arrest. The mechanism underlying these symptoms was spasm of the left circumflex artery at the site of severe stenosis of its middle segment just before the origin of the sinus node artery.
