A Time Frame for Testing Negative for SARS-COV2 in People with Obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a major risk factor for becoming seriously ill with the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). One difficulty faced by clinicians and by patients is the unknown time frame of hospitalization until discharge of symptomatic patients. METHODS: We followed 34 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection who recovered fromthe infection. All diagnoses were given using semi-quantitative RT-PCR on nasopharyngeal swabs. Envelope protein gene (E), RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene (RdRP), and nucleocapsid gene (N) were measured by RT-PCR. Weight was measured and height was se

Characteristics and distribution of obesity in the Arab-American population of southeastern Michigan.

BACKGROUND: Arab-Americans constitute ~ 5% of Michigan's population. Estimates of obesity in Arab-Americans are not up-to-date. We aim to describe the distribution of and factors associated with obesity in an Arab-American population in Southeastern Michigan (SE MI). METHODS: Retrospective medical record review identified n = 2363 Arab-American patients seeking care at an Arab-American serving clinic in SE MI, located in a city which is home to a large proportion of Arab-Americans in the United States (US). Body mass index (BMI) was the primary outcome of interest. Distribution of BMI was des

Hypothalamic Ceramides and the Ovarian Sympathetic System: At the Crossroads of Obesity and Puberty.

Childhood obesity has been linked to early puberty in girls but the mechanism(s) by which overnutrition triggers pubertal onset remain unclear. In a recent issue of Cell Metabolism, Heras et al., 2020 implicate a non-canonical central ceramide to ovarian sympathetic innervation pathway as a novel mediator of obesity-induced pubertal acceleration in female rats.

Anxiety and depression in children and adolescents with obesity: a nationwide study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression are more common in children with obesity than in children of normal weight, but it is unclear whether this association is independent of other known risk factors. Interpretation of results from previous studies is hampered by methodological limitations, including self-reported assessment of anxiety, depression, and anthropometry. The aim of this study was to investigate whether obesity increases the risk of anxiety or depression independently of other risk factors in a large cohort of children and adolescents, using robust measures with regard to exposure and

Lipid profile and left ventricular geometry pattern in obese children.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Previous studies reported conflicting results concerning the relationship between serum lipid levels and left ventricular geometry pattern. We sought to explore the relationship between standard serum lipid profile measures with left ventricular geometry pattern in obese children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 70 obese children were examined. Fasting blood samples were taken to measure total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (L

Small airway function in obese individuals with self-reported asthma.

Diagnosis of asthma in obese individuals frequently relies on clinical history, as airflow by spirometry may remain normal. This study hypothesised that obese subjects with self-reported asthma and normal spirometry will demonstrate distinct clinical characteristics, metabolic comorbidities and enhanced small airway dysfunction as compared with healthy obese subjects. Spirometry, plethysmography and oscillometry data pre/post-bronchodilator were obtained in 357 obese subjects in three groups as follows: no asthma group (n=180), self-reported asthma normal spirometry group (n=126), and asthma o

Influence of the urban context on the relationship between neighbourhood deprivation and obesity.

BACKGROUND: In middle- and high-income countries, obesity is positively associated with neighbourhood deprivation. However, the moderating effect of the broader urban residential context on this relationship remains poorly understood. METHODS: In this study, we have examined the nonlinear and geographically varying relationship between neighbourhood deprivation and the likelihood of being a person with overweight among participants of the French NutriNet-Santé adult cohort study (n = 68,698), adjusted for age, gender and educational level. Ten urban residential contexts (e.g., suburbs, peri-u

Body weight management in overweight and obese breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that overweight and obese breast cancer survivors are at increased risk of cancer recurrence and have higher all-cause mortality. Obesity has an impact on breast cancer survivor's quality of life (QOL) and increases the risk of longer-term morbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Many cancer guidelines recommend survivors maintain a healthy weight but there is a lack of evidence regarding which weight loss method to recommend. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of different body weight loss approaches in breast cancer survivors who ar

New insights into different adipokines in linking the pathophysiology of obesity and psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, systemic, hyper-proliferative immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease. The results of epidemiological investigations have shown that psoriasis affects around 2% of the general population worldwide, and the total number of psoriasis patients is more than 6 million in China. Apart from the skin manifestations, psoriasis has been verified to associate with several metabolic comorbidities, such as insulin resistance, diabetes and obesity. However, the underlying mechanism is still not elucidated. Adipocytes, considered as the active endocrine cells, are dysfunctional in o

Adipose tissue-derived autotaxin causes cardiomyopathy in obese mice.

The prevalence of obesity is dramatic increased and strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. Adipokines, secreted from adipose tissues, are critical risk factors for the development of cardiomyopathy. Present study aimed to investigate the pathophysiological role of autotaxin in obesity-related cardiomyopathy. In high-fat diet-fed mice, autotaxin was mainly synthesized and secreted from adipocytes. The increased accumulation of cardiac autotaxin was positively associated with cardiac dysfunction in obese mice. Interestingly, specific blockage of adipose tissue autotaxin effectively pro

Relation of the degree of obesity in childhood to adipose tissue insulin resistance.

AIMS: In this study, we investigated whether adipose tissue insulin resistance (IR) is affected by the degree of obesity during the fasting and post-prandial state, independent of glucose tolerance among obese children and adolescents. We also tested whether systemic subclinical inflammation is associated with adipose tissue IR. METHODS: Subjects were recruited to the Yale Pathophysiology of Type 2 Diabetes in Youth Study (NCT01967849). An oral glucose-tolerance test was performed to establish glucose-tolerance status and blood samples were drawn for measurement of free fatty acids (FFAs), to
