Screening for mood and anxiety disorders with the five-item, the three-item, and the two-item Mental Health Inventory.

The Mental Health Inventory (MHI)-5 is an attractive, brief screening questionnaire for depression and anxiety disorders. It has been suggested that the three questions on depression (MHI-d) may be as good as the full MHI-5 in assessing depressive disorders. We examined the validity of the MHI-d and the MHI-a (the remaining two items on anxiety) in a large population-based sample of 7076 adults in the Netherlands. We also examined the validity of the MHI in assessing specific anxiety disorders. The presence of depressive and anxiety disorders in the past month was assessed with the Composite I

Striatal abnormalities in trichotillomania: a multi-site MRI analysis.

Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) is characterized by the repetitive pulling out of one's own hair, and is classified as an Obsessive-Compulsive Related Disorder. Abnormalities of the ventral and dorsal striatum have been implicated in disease models of trichotillomania, based on translational research, but direct evidence is lacking. The aim of this study was to elucidate subcortical morphometric abnormalities, including localized curvature changes, in trichotillomania. De-identified MRI scans were pooled by contacting authors of previous peer-reviewed studies that examined brain struc

Thought-fusion beliefs' independent causal effects on obsessive-compulsive symptoms: Evidence from experimental manipulations.

BACKGROUND: This study examined, using a laboratory paradigm, whether activating thought-fusion beliefs has an immediate effect on obsessive-compulsive-like symptoms, namely discomfort and behavioral responses to neutral intrusive thoughts, independent of cognitive self-consciousness, and assessed its clinical specificity. METHOD: A 2 (group, patients with OCD vs. healthy control) × 3 (experimental condition, thought-fusion beliefs plus cognitive self-consciousness vs. cognitive self-consciousness alone vs. control) mixed-design experiment was conducted (n = 108). Variables were manipulated u

Obsessive-Compulsive Training Experiences in United States (US) Medical School Education Programs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the content and structure of OCD-specific training within United States osteopathic (D.O.) and allopathic (M.D.) medical schools. Although many physicians encounter patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in clinical practice, limited familiarity with the full range of OCD presentations, including typical and atypical forms, may contribute to misdiagnosis and delays in accurate diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Respondents from 35 of the 154 (22.73%) medical schools within the United States (28 (80%) allopathic, 7 (20%) osteopathic schools) completed a survey

Individualized, connectome-based, non-invasive stimulation of OCD deep-brain targets: A proof-of-concept.

Treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) generally improves with deep-brain stimulation (DBS), thought to modulate neural activity at both the implantation site and in connected brain regions. However, its invasive nature, side-effects, and lack of customization, make non-invasive treatments preferable. Harnessing the established remote effects of cortical transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), connectivity-based approaches have emerged for depression that aim at influencing distant regions connected to the stimulation site. We here investigated whether effective OCD DBS targe

Breaking the cycle: Exploring the relationship of metacognition beliefs, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and psychosocial performance among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.

THE RELEVANCE TO MENTAL HEALTH NURSING: This research paper explores the intricate relationship between metacognitive dysfunctional beliefs, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and psychosocial performance in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Understanding these dynamics can help mental health nurses identify and address each patient's needs more effectively. It can guide them in devising personalized care plans that not only manage the symptoms but also improve the underlying mechanism that exacerbates the psychotic symptoms and social functioning and the overall quality of life. Moreover, th

Intense Imagery Movements May Lead to Maladaptive Daydreaming: A Case Series and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: This case series highlights the connection between childhood intense imagery movements (IIM) and adult-reported maladaptive daydreaming (MD). Motor stereotypies occur in typically developing children and also with co-occurring neurodevelopmental differences. A subgroup with complex motor stereotypies reports accompanying intense imagery, often enhanced by the movements. This phenomenon can persist into adulthood and, in some cases, will need active management to prevent significant distress and impairment. CASES: Six adults, self-reporting maladaptive daydreaming associated with s

An updated review of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with Streptococcus/pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome, also known as idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis: What the allergist should know.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome, further subcategorized as pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcus, is a form of idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis (IAE). Poststreptococcal autoimmunity seen in Idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis manifests as various neuropsychiatric symptoms such as obsessive rituals, tics, anxiety, depression, and many others. Idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis has clinically heterogeneous phenotypes that make accurate diagnosing difficult, although diagnostic testing such as the Cunningham Panel increases the

Florida Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory and Children's Florida Obsessive Compulsive Inventory: A reliability generalization meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Florida Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (FOCI) and its pediatric version, the Children's Florida Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (C-FOCI), are instruments for evaluating obsessive-compulsive symptomatology. METHOD: A reliability generalization meta-analysis was conducted to estimate an average reliability of the scores and to identify study characteristics that explained the heterogeneity among scores. Using Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20) and Cronbach's α, a total of 23 and 20 independent samples were included in the meta-analysis for the FOCI and C-FOCI. RESULTS: We found an aver

The COVID-19 pandemic and children with PANS/PANDAS: an evaluation of symptom severity, telehealth, and vaccination hesitancy.

The current study assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children with PANS/PANDAS, a condition characterized by sudden-onset obsessive-compulsive, tic, or restrictive eating symptoms following infection. We conducted an anonymous survey between February and June 2021 of 254 self-reported caregivers of minors with PANS/PANDAS. Caregivers answered questions regarding PANS/PANDAS symptoms, telehealth care, and intention to vaccinate their child against COVID-19. PANS/PANDAS symptoms during COVID-19 infections were assessed when applicable. Children's OCD symptoms and coercive behaviors

Oscillatory activity in the BNST/ALIC and the frontal cortex in OCD: acute effects of DBS.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis/anterior limb of the internal capsule (BNST/ALIC) is successfully used for treatment of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Clinical and experimental studies have suggested that enhanced network synchronization in the theta band is correlated with severity of symptoms. The mechanisms of action of DBS remain unclear in OCD. We here investigate the effect of acute stimulation of the BNCT/ALIC on oscillatory neuronal activity in patients with OCD implanted with DBS electrodes. We recorded the oscillatory activi

Longitudinal trajectory and predictors of change in family accommodation during exposure therapy for pediatric OCD.

Family accommodation (FA) is key in the maintenance of OCD. However, most studies are cross-sectional, and have not identified long-term trajectories and correlates of FA changes over treatment. This study investigated changes in clinician-rated FA over 10 sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for 142 children with OCD, as well as several key predictors/correlates: (a) clinician-rated OCD symptom severity, (b) child- and parent-rated functional impairment, (c) parent-rated treatment expectancies, and (d) child- and parent-rated therapeutic alliance. Multi-level models indicated that F

Paediatric Acute onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome: Exploratory study finds no evidence of HLA class II association but high rate of autoimmunity in first-degree relatives.

AIM: Paediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) is defined by an acute onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder and/or eating restrictions and at least two other severe neuropsychiatric symptoms. The condition is suspected to have an immune-mediated pathophysiology, but reliable biomarkers have not been identified. METHODS: We hypothesised that PANS, like narcolepsy, might have a human leucocyte antigen (HLA) association, as found in 95% of children developing narcolepsy after H1N1 immunisation. Low resolution genotyping of the MHC class II antigens HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 was perfor

Structural Imaging in OCD.

Anatomical imaging in OCD using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been performed since the late 1980s. MRI research was further stimulated with the advent of automated image processing techniques such as voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and surface-based methods (e.g., FreeSurfer) which allow for detailed whole-brain data analyses. Early studies suggesting involvement of corticostriatal circuitry (particularly orbitofrontal cortex and ventral striatum) have been complemented by meta-analyses and pooled analyses indicating additional involvement of posterior brain regions, in particular parieta

Neuroticism and Religiosity: The Role of Obsessive Beliefs, Thought-Control Strategies and Guilt in Scrupulosity and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms Among Muslim Undergraduates.

Neuroticism and religiosity are distal vulnerability factors for OCD phenomenon. The present study aimed to examine the roles of obsessive beliefs (OBs), thought-control strategies, and guilt in the relationship between these vulnerability factors and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCSs), specifically scrupulosity symptoms in a Muslim sample via SEM. The sample consisted of 273 university students who filled out a set of questionnaires. The results indicated that neuroticism and the degree of religiosity predict OBs that are positively associated with guilt and self-punishment both of which pr

Interpretation bias and contamination-based obsessive-compulsive symptoms influence emotional intensity related to disgust and fear.

Biased processing of disgust-related stimuli is increasingly discussed in addition to fear-related processing as a maintenance factor for contamination-based obsessive-compulsive disorder (C-OCD). However, the differential impact of fear and disgust on biased processing in C-OCD is not yet completely understood. Because it is difficult to distinguish the two emotions in self-report assessment by directly addressing the specific emotions, a text paragraph-based interpretation bias paradigm was applied to more implicitly assess emotions. For the text-based interpretation bias paradigm, disgust-r

Cognitive behavior therapy-based intervention for a subacute stroke patient with severe fear of falling: a case report.

We present the case of a 42-year-old man with subacute stroke who developed remarkable fear of falling and eventually recovered with an approach based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The CBT-based approach was implemented after the patient developed significant fear of falling with exacerbated obsessive-compulsive symptoms appeared immediately after a fall. The patient's anxiety decreased over time, and his ability to perform these tasks and activities of daily living improved accordingly. After 6 weeks of intervention, his anxiety toward gait and stairs almost disappeared; additionally
