Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) is commonly performed following orthognathic surgery, including Le Fort I osteotomy and sagittal split ramus osteotomy, to maintain the planned occlusion. Although perioperative pulmonary complications are rare in healthy young adults, we encountered a case of lung abscess that developed from aspiration pneumonia during the period of IMF. Here, we report the case with a review of the literature. The patient was a 22-year-old man with bilateral cleft lip and palate, presenting with class III malocclusion due to maxillary hypoplasia. Orthognathic surgery (Le Fort I

Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injuries are common complications of orthognathic surgery, with incidences reported from 0% to 85% due to inconsistent definitions, assessment methods and follow-up protocols. These limitations hinder comparisons, emphasising the need for standardised evaluation. This 10-year retrospective cohort study investigates IAN injury rates following mandibular osteotomies, focusing on medium-long term outcomes and risk factors. A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary orthognathic centre (2014-2024) on sagittal split osteotomies, performed either as stand-

15q11.2 microdeletion syndrome, also known as Burnside-Butler syndrome, is a rare partial autosomal monosomy associated with a spectrum of neurodevelopmental, cognitive, and behavioral disorders. Due to its atypical occurrence and limited research, craniofacial manifestations linked to this microdeletion remain poorly documented. This study presents a novel case of severe midface hypoplasia in a patient with 15q11.2 microdeletion syndrome, treated with a 2-stage surgical approach, and a review of the literature for simultaneous Le Fort III/I osteotomies. The first phase involved simultaneous L

In the field of maxillofacial surgery, facial bone fractures and osteotomies are common but the management of these conditions is associated with complications, including displacement after fracture or relapse after orthognathic surgery. Botulinum toxin, a therapeutic agent that temporarily paralyzes the injected muscle, has several indications in the orofacial region. This study presents a case series and a systematic review of the literature regarding the use of botulinum toxin in masticatory muscles for the management of facial bone fractures and osteotomies. Three cases were reported and a

BACKGROUND: Young patients with hip dysplasia and non-arthritic pain can be surgically treated with periacetabular osteotomy and in some cases with supplementary hip arthroscopy. On average, patient-reported pain improves after surgery, however, some patients still experience a high level of pain. It is unknown if it relates to low physical function. The aim of this study was to investigate physical function in patients surgically treated for hip dysplasia.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 19 patients allocated into Low Pain (LP) and High Pain (HP) groups, using The Copenhagen Hip

Recurrent patellar instability is a common problem and especially pronounced in young and active adults. Surgical treatment is preferred over nonoperative treatment, as this reduces redislocations or subluxations and potential cartilage damage, and is associated with increased quality of life. There are several risk factors for patellar instability, which include demographic risk factors (age, gender), soft-tissue imbalances (weak core stability, dynamic valgus, patellar tilt), and underlying anatomic abnormalities (patella alta, increased tibial tubercle trochlear grove distance, coronal mala

PURPOSE: Tibial valgus osteotomy has shown to be a successful and cost-effective procedure. The advent of image processing and three-dimensional (3D) printing is an interesting tool for achieving more accurate and reproducible results. The aim of our study was to compare the accuracy of the conventional technique and the use of customized guides in the correction of tibial deformities in tibial varus patients, the surgical and clinical benefits, and the impact of treatment in the outpatient setting.
METHODS: A prospective cohort of 30 patients who underwent tibial valgus osteotomy were select

The treatment of diaphyseal fractures aims to reestablish the length and angular and rotational alignment of the fractured bone so that the biological process of consolidation can occur. When these objectives are not achieved, deformities or pseudarthrosis may occur. The goal of the arthrodesis described in this paper is to treat pain, stabilize the ankle, and align the limb for plantigrade support, in a patient who suffered with a diaphyseal fracture of the tibia and evolved with mal union and posttraumatic arthrosis of the ankle. Level of evidence: IV - Case report.

PURPOSE: Derotational distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) is the causal treatment for patients with femoral torsional deformity. The fixation is achieved by a unilateral angle-stable plate. Delayed- or non-unions are one of the main risks of the procedure. An additional contralateral fixation may benefit the outcome. Therefore, we hypothesize that primary stability in DFO can be improved by an additional fixation with a hinge screw or an internal plate.
METHODS: Derotational DFO was performed in 15 knees and fixed either with an angle-stable plate only (group 'None'), with an additional lateral sc

Background: Stem revisions in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) with proximal bone stock loss may be dealt with utilizing modular, uncemented conical stems. During stem extraction, surgeons may resort to extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO). However, ETO is associated with extensive blood loss and infections. This study compared the clinical outcomes, radiographic results and complications in THA revisions utilizing conical modular stem with and without ETO. Methods: Patients who underwent revision THA with or without ETO were assessed retrospectively. The minimal follow-up was 3 years. T

Freiberg disease (FD) is a condition characterized by osteochondrosis affecting the metatarsal heads, with the second metatarsal head being the most commonly affected. Dorsiflexion Closing Wedge Osteotomy of the Metatarsal Head (DCWMO) has been conventionally employed, whereas Osteochondral Autologous Transplantation (OAT) represents a more recent technique with restricted comparative research. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of DCWMO and OAT for treating Freiberg disease (FD). Groups were established among two institutions. Institution-1 has made the treatment with OAT (8 patients) a

OBJECTIVE: Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) is an effective surgical procedure for adult spinal deformity (ASD). However, the complexity of the procedure and its associated complications including rod fracture (RF) remain challenging issues. Among several RF reduction methods, the accessory rod (AR) is an important surgical technique. To date, knowledge about the ideal length and configuration of the AR is limited. This study aimed to assess the influence of the connection levels and configuration of the AR on RF occurrence in patients with ASD who underwent long level constructs and PSO.

Simultaneous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) and valgus high tibial osteotomy (HTO) alleviates pain in 70% of individuals with ACL deficiency and varus femorotibial osteoarthritis, allows for sustainable stabilization of the knee at the 10-year follow-up and a return to sport (RTS) in 33%-80% of cases, but femorotibial osteoarthritis progression occurs in 39% of cases. The complication rate ranges from 0% to 23.5% (6.5% revision valgus HTO, 17.5% ACL graft failure, 7.7% venous thrombosis). Simultaneous ACLR and HTO leads to satisfactory results in patients with ACL defic
